The Denver Post expects LB Nate Irving to get "every chance" to win the Broncos' middle linebacker job.
Reporter Mike Klis made a similar proclamation in January, but that was before the Broncos didn't sign or draft any serious competition. A 2011 third-round pick, Irving has mostly played on the outside and special teams to this point in his career. Joe Mays is expected to be released, leaving Stewart Bradley as the Broncos' only fallback option behind Irving. May 7 - 5:27 PM

The Denver Post says LB Nate Irving will get a shot to earn a starting spot on defense this offseason.

Middle linebacker is his only option with Von Miller and Wesley Woodyard entrenched on the outside. Irving, a 2011 third-rounder, played mainly in an outside reserve role in 2012. Keith Brooking, 38, is a free agent after starting 15 games, and D.J. Williams and Joe Mays could be cut due to lofty cap numbers.

Broncos LB Nate Irving was forced from Sunday's game against the Texans with a concussion.

Obviously, he will not return. Irving remained down for several minutes after banging his head, but was eventually able to walk off the field under his own power. A special teamer and reserve linebacker, Irving has three tackles through three games.

The Broncos have moved 2011 third-round pick Nate Irving from middle to strong-side linebacker.

Many observers expected last year's 67th overall draft pick to start in the middle as a rookie, but Irving never beat out Joe Mays and is now listed directly behind Von Miller on the depth chart. Mays is entrenched inside, with undrafted rookie Steven Johnson behind him. Feel free to drop Irving in IDP leagues.

The Denver Post suggests the Broncos aren't ready to turn middle linebacker over to 2011 third-rounder Nate Irvin after all.

An early offseason report said the Broncos were high on Irving's "presence and potential," but he never got beyond special teams action as a rookie. Denver is hosting free agent Jameel McClain, who would be an ideal fit in the middle of Jack Del Rio's defense as a two-down run-thumper.

Sporting News' Andrew Mason suggests that the Broncos may be ready to turn over their starting middle linebacker job to Nate Irving in 2012.

The 67th overall pick in last year's draft, the Broncos are smitten with Irving's "presence and potential," per Mason, and he may very well have started games in 2011 if not for the lockout-shortened offseason. Denver instead stuck with Joe Mays, a two-down thumper who lacks Irving's range, playmaking ability, and cover skills. Mays may be allowed to sign elsewhere this spring.

Rookie LB Nate Irving missed time in training camp with an ankle injury.

According to beat writer Lee Rasizer, the missed time "stunted his progress," but he's "beginning to assimilate the playbook and the defensive checks necessary at his position." Behind Joe Mays and Mario Haggan on the depth chart, Irving will begin making the climb back up.

Rookie Nate Irving is listed as the Broncos' third-team middle linebacker on their preliminary preseason depth chart.

He's behind both Joe Mays and Mario Haggan. It isn't because Irving is a rookie, either; SLB Von Miller and FS Rahim Moore are both listed as starters, and TE Julius Thomas is seeing extensive action with the first team. Irving has four preseason games to win the job. Until then, he's not on the IDP radar.

Broncos signed No. 67 overall pick Nate Irving to a four-year contract.

Working in Irving's favor is his athleticism and the weakness in the middle of the Broncos' defense. Working against him is John Fox's age-old refusal to start rookies. Fox did do it with Jon Beason in Carolina, which makes us think he may move Irving along quickly as well. The former North Carolina State star and Bill Parcells favorite will battle veteran Joe Mays.

Broncos GM Brian Xanders revealed that the team envisions No. 67 overall pick Nate Irving as a middle linebacker.

Xanders, in fact, said Irving was Denver's No. 1-rated inside 'backer in the entire draft. A first-team All-ACC pick in 2010, Irving spearheaded one of the nation's top run defenses as a senior. Long-armed, Irving also showed a knack for making big plays in coverage and deceptive pass rush ability. If Irving wins a starting job, he'll be a plug-and-play LB2/3 in IDP leagues.

Broncos selected North Carolina State LB Nate Irving with the No. 67 overall pick in the 2011 NFL draft.

For whatever it's worth, Bill Parcells graded Irving as a first-round pick on The Tuna's ESPN special. We are pretty sure Irving would've gone higher than the third round had he not been involved in a car crash in college that resulted in a compound leg fracture and several other injuries. Irving is a highly productive player and considered an asset in coverage. He goes 6-foot-1 and 242 pounds, and in Denver most likely projects as a middle linebacker.
