Chargers claimed CB Johnny Patrick off waivers from the Saints.
The 2011 third-rounder was waived on Tuesday. It bodes poorly for Patrick's future that a team as talent deficient as the Saints on defense would waive a day-two pick less than two years after the fact — especially in February — but he's still only 24. Just two years removed from being a third-round pick, Patrick was due only $555,000, but could never establish himself as a starter. That's despite the fact that the Saints boasted one of the worst defenses in league history last season, providing ample opportunity for young players to step up. Patrick was relentlessly burned in coverage when he did take the field. He'll be up against it to crack someone's 53-man roster in camp.

Patrick couldn't put any weight on the leg while being helped off by Saints trainers. Newly acquired cornerback Jerome Murphy will be thrown into the fire. New Orleans is already missing starter Jabari Greer.

The Saints are "tentatively penciling in" 2011 third-round pick Johnny Patrick as their nickel cornerback for 2012.

The Saints let Tracy Porter and Leigh Torrence go in free agency largely because they believe Patrick is ready to cover the slot -- Porter's old role. Patrick made just six tackles in nine appearances last season, primarily playing special teams. This year, the Saints will count on Patrick to cover the likes of Preston Parker, Harry Douglas, and Joe Adams in the NFC South.

Third-round CB Johnny Patrick is week-to-week with a knee sprain sustained in Friday's preseason opener.

Patrick has already been ruled out for this week's exhibition game, though coach Sean Payton won't hazard any guesses beyond that. Patrick was looking "strong" in training camp and was expected to push Patrick Robinson at nickel back.

A three-year starter at Louisville, Patrick is expected to push 2010 first-rounder Patrick Robinson for the Saints' nickel back job. His biggest impact will likely come on special teams, where he has the speed to take over on returns and as the gunner in coverage.

The New Orleans Times-Picayune's Jeff Duncan believes third-round pick Johnny Patrick has a legitimate chance to earn the Saints' nickel back job this season.

The general consensus has been that Patrick will be mostly used on special teams, but Duncan thinks he's a "very underrated prospect." He'll have to beat out 2010 first-round pick Patrick Robinson, who is coming off of an injury-marred rookie season. Patrick and Robinson will also have Randall Gay to contend with if Gay is amenable to a sizable pay cut.

A star sprinter in high school, Saints HC Sean Payton says Patrick may even get a shot to be a gunner. The Louisville product also has return skills, and has a real chance to make an impact on special teams as a rookie.

Saints selected Louisville CB Johnny Patrick with the No. 88 overall pick in the 2011 NFL draft.

A three-year starter and all-Conference selection as a senior, Patrick is aggressive and athletic in coverage, showing fine instincts and ball skills. He has a chance to develop as a starter under coordinator Gregg Williams, but he'll have to improve his tackling. He'll enter the league as a dime back and special teamer.
