Chris Conte is expected to be the Bears' starting free safety.

Conte suffered a concussion nine days ago and still needs to be cleared. But he's going to get the first crack at the job after rookie Brock Vereen failed to overtake him. Ryan Mundy is the strong safety, while Danny McCray will concentrate on special teams. Chicago's safety spots remain question marks.
Sep 1 - 8:21 PM

Bears S Chris Conte suffered a concussion in Friday night's preseason game.

It's a bad break for Conte, whose roster chances may be slipping way. He just recently returned to practice after major offseason shoulder surgery.
Aug 23 - 12:34 AM

Bears FS Chris Conte (shoulder) is expected to play in Chicago's third preseason game against Seattle next Friday.

"We want to get him in there and we certainly want to give him a chance to compete," coach Marc Trestman said. Conte's injury caused him to fall behind both Danny McCray and rookie Brock Vereen, but there is still time for him to regain his starting spot. Ryan Mundy is locked in as the Bears' starting strong safety.

Aug 16 - 8:54 AM

Bears FS Chris Conte (shoulder) returned to practice Sunday.

He's been activated from camp PUP and should be all systems go. Conte struggled mightily in 2013, while rookie Brock Vereen performed admirably in Chicago's preseason opener, grading out positively both in coverage and run support per Pro Football Focus. Conte is probably not going to get his job back.
Aug 10 - 5:45 PM

Bears placed FS Chris Conte (shoulder) on the active/PUP list.

Conte had shoulder surgery in April and is now behind the eight ball after a horrific 2013 season. Rookie Brock Vereen will take the first-team reps while Conte is sidelined. Ryan Mundy and Adrian Wilson will handle strong safety.
Jul 23 - 3:22 PM

Bears coach Marc Trestman admits FS Chris Conte (shoulder) may not be ready for the start of training camp.

Conte underwent extensive shoulder surgery in early April. After a poor season, Conte's starting job is in serious doubt with the Bears preparing rookie Brock Vereen for his role. Conte's tenuous recovery is likely one of the reasons GM Phil Emery is taking a shot on 34-year-old SS Adrian Wilson.
Jun 23 - 4:37 PM

ESPN Bears reporter Michael C. Wright believes FS Chris Conte will retain his starting role.

After being one of the weakest links in a horrendous run defense last season, Conte was certainly not assured a starting role this year. The Bears failed to add an impact safety this offseason, so Conte has the upper hand in the camp battle to come. He will only have to fend off underwhelming M.D. Jennings and rookie Brock Vereen to keep his spot. Conte is recovering from offseason shoulder surgery but should be ready by the first preseason game.

May 24 - 9:29 AM

The Bears expect S Chris Conte (shoulder) to be available for the first preseason game.

Conte is coming off offseason surgery. He started all 16 games a year ago, getting blasted in the run game as the Bears set records for ineptitude in that category. Conte won't be handed the starting free safety gig as he heads into the final year of his rookie deal.
May 1 - 12:30 PM

Bears S Chris Conte has undergone shoulder surgery, and will be sidelined 4-5 months.

The timeline leaves Conte highly questionable for training camp. He'll likely start out on the active/PUP list. It's a major setback for a player who's supposedly "in the mix" to start despite a rough 2013. Going into the final year of his rookie contract, Conte's injury has probably sewn up a spot on the bench.
Apr 3 - 4:39 PM

Bears GM Phil Emery says S Chris Conte will remain in the mix for a starting job in 2014.

Conte was woefully ineffective last season, but the Bears aren't ready to give up on the 2011 third-rounder just yet. Of course, that could easily change depending on what they do in free agency and the draft. Even if the Bears stand pat, Conte will have to earn his job in camp.
