Bucs S Chris Conte is dealing with a hamstring injury.

Conte was brought in to solidify the free safety role, but he injured his hamstring on the first day of training camp and has not practiced since. Conte should know Lovie Smith's system well after playing for him in Chicago, but he needs to get on the field if he hopes to beat out Bradley McDougald and D.J. Swearinger for a starting role.

Bucs signed S Chris Conte, formerly of the Bears.

The 26-year-old gives Tampa Bay some stability at safety after four players started at least five games at that position last season. He's likely to start at free safety following Dashon Goldson's departure. Conte played his first two seasons under coach Lovie Smith in Chicago. Although he has battled numerous injuries -- particularly to his shoulder -- Conte is a capable starter when healthy. He played cornerback in college.

Free agent S Chris Conte has a visit lined up with the Jets if his deal with the Buccaneers falls through.

This has to have the Bucs at least a little concerned. If Conte's preference is to win games, it's more likely that will happen in New York as the Jets have vastly improved themselves this offseason. There are still plenty of reasons for Conte to sign with Tampa Bay, including his close ties to head coach Lovie Smith. Dashon Goldson's release should create urgency for Tampa Bay to sign Conte.

The Bucs are expected to sign free agent S Chris Conte.

Conte will reunite with former coach Lovie Smith. He should start opposite Bradley McDougald in Smith's Tampa-2 scheme, but is never a good bet to stay healthy. Conte's signing allows the Bucs to move on from FS Dashon Goldson.
Mar 11 - 6:21 PM

Free agent S Chris Conte will visit the Bucs this week.

Conte was linked to the Bucs prior to the start of free agency. He has a history with coach Lovie Smith, who selected him in the third round of the 2011 draft. The Bucs are expected to cut FS Dashon Goldson at some point.

The Buccaneers are expected to be "in play" for free agent S Chris Conte.

Conte was drafted by Lovie Smith's Bears in 2011. Although he has been incredibly injury prone, Conte is a league-average starter and offers some versatility as a former college cornerback. He turned 26 last month.

Chris Conte is expected to be the Bears' starting free safety.

Conte suffered a concussion nine days ago and still needs to be cleared. But he's going to get the first crack at the job after rookie Brock Vereen failed to overtake him.
