Bears FS Chris Conte's shoulder injury has been diagnosed as a dislocation.

Although no surgery has been planned, Conte's status for the season opener is now up in the air. The Bears will likely turn to veteran Craig Steltz if Conte misses time.

Bears FS Chris Conte will be out "a while" after suffering a shoulder injury in Saturday's preseason game against the Redskins.

"His shoulder’s a little sore right now," coach Lovie Smith said Monday. Reserve S Brandon Hardin is day-to-day with a neck injury. It sounds like Conte could still be ready for Week 1, but Craig Steltz should start opposite Major Wright if he isn't.

Bears FS Chris Conte (foot) is expected to fully participate in the team's offseason program, which begins Monday.

Conte almost suffered a dreaded Lisfranc injury last December, but ended up with a more conventional sprain. "Instead of tearing it, the space between the bones just widened at little bit," he explained. "They just casted it and it healed." A nine-game starter as a rookie, Conte is penciled in as the Bears' free safety.

Bears FS Chris Conte (I.R., foot) expects to be ready for the Bears' offseason program.

"I was lucky it wasn't worse than it was. But it's not anything serious," Conte said of his foot sprain, which also involved ligament damage. "I'm not going to miss any football stuff." The third-rounder finished his rookie year with 43 tackles in nine starts. He appears to have a bright future as a cover safety.

Bears placed FS Chris Conte (foot) on injured reserve, ending his season.

Conte suffered a sprained in foot in Week 15. Mistake-prone Brandon Meriweather is expected to rejoin the starting lineup against the Packers. The No. 93 overall pick in the 2011 draft, Conte helped stabilize the back end after taking over in mid-October. He should return as the starter in 2012.

Bears FS Chris Conte has been diagnosed with a sprained foot, and is without a timetable for a return.

It's possible Conte could be sidelined only 1-2 weeks, but that's obviously the season at this point. Brandon Meriweather will most likely start in Conte's place at free safety against the Packers.

Bears FS Chris Conte is done for the remainder of Sunday's game with a foot injury.

The initial belief was that Conte injured his ankle. Regardless, the fact that Conte was quickly downgraded from "questionable" to return to "out" suggests X-rays showed a fracture of some kind. His backup is Brandon Meriweather.

Rookie Chris Conte will start at free safety this week against the Vikings, with Major Wright entering the lineup at strong safety.

Starters Chris Harris and Brandon Meriweather have been justifiably benched after taking bad angles, tackling poorly, and getting burned in coverage against the Lions. Conte and Wright will be the 28th different starting safety combination since Lovie Smith took over in 2004 -- and the fifth already this season. Harris may go on the trading block before next week's deadline.

The Bears view third-round pick Chris Conte as a free safety.

The Chicago Tribune's Dan Pompei thinks Conte's selection could spell the end of free agent Danieal Manning's time in Chicago. Just a one-year starter at Cal, Conte would ideally see a fairly limited number of snaps in 2011. Chris Harris and Major Wright are likely to be the Bears' starting safeties this season.

Bears selected California S Chris Conte with the No. 93 overall pick in the 2011 NFL draft.

An interesting prospect, Conte only started 17 games with two career interceptions at Cal. But the ex-cornerback is a favorite of NFL Films guru Greg Cosell for his starting-caliber free safety range, and has impressive 4.5-flat wheels at 6'1/197. Also possessing experience covering the slot and tight ends, Conte is insurance for free agent Danieal Manning.
