The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette believes the Steelers' re-signing of William Gay indicates a lack of confidence in 2011 third-round CB Curtis Brown.
The Steelers are now projecting Gay as their new nickel back or starter opposite Ike Taylor, depending on a likely camp battle with Cortez Allen. (We expect Allen to win that competition.) Brown struggled in sub-packages last season and figures to be relegated to special teams in 2013, assuming he makes the roster. Mar 5 - 1:04 AM

Steelers placed CB Curtis Brown (ankle) on season-ending injured reserve.

Brown, in his second season out of Texas, played in all 15 games this season and recorded 28 tackles and two pass break-ups while acting as the nickel corner. The 2011 third-rounder has two years left on his rookie deal.

Steelers nickelback Curtis Brown was benched during Sunday's loss to the Chargers.

The Steelers couldn't overcome the absence of top corner Ike Taylor (leg). Normal nickelback Cortez Allen was forced into a starting role and Brown got eaten up by backup slot receiver Michael Spurlock. He ended up getting replaced by practice squad callup Josh Victorian. Dez Bryant and Miles Austin should have a field day against this secondary in Week 15.

Steelers placed CB Curtis Brown (knee) on injured reserve, ending his season.

The 95th overall pick in the draft, Brown must have suffered the injury in practice because he hasn't played a down on defense as a rookie. He did rack up 11 special teams tackles. Assuming he doesn't need major surgery, Brown could push for nickel duties in 2012. He had shown well in practice.

The Steelers considered third-rounder Curtis Brown the best cover corner at Texas last season.

Teammates Aaron Williams and Chykie Brown went in the second and fifth round respectively. Curtis Brown recorded just two interceptions for the Longhorns, but the Steelers attribute that low total to QBs avoiding his side of the field. "I didn't get a ball [thrown my way] until my sixth game in the season," said Brown. "I just really didn't get thrown at." Brown is expected to be the nickelback if Ike Taylor is re-signed.

Steelers selected Texas CB Curtis Brown with the No. 95 overall pick in the 2011 NFL draft.

Another guy way overrated by the media -- we actually saw Brown in the first round of some mocks -- the 6-foot, 180-pound cornerback was perhaps just Texas' third best DB last year, behind Aaron Williams and Chykie Brown. Curtis picked off two passes in his college career, isn't built for run support, and was really at his best when covering kickoffs and punts on special teams. This could be another Keenan Lewis/Joe Burnett pick for the Steelers.
