Free agent ILB Colin McCarthy announced his retirement from the NFL.
McCarthy just turned 27 last week. He was a fourth-round pick out of Miami by the Titans in 2011 and appeared in 36 games for Tennessee before injuries completely derailed his once-promising career. McCarthy battled a concussion in 2012, hamstring injury in 2013, and sat out all of 2014 after shoulder surgery. He started 19 games for the Titans and amassed 161 tackles. Jun 4 - 10:34 AM

Free agent ILB Colin McCarthy will visit the Patriots.

McCarthy missed all of last season after undergoing shoulder surgery. He was mildly productive with Tennessee, compiling 161 tackles over 36 games. He'd be hard-pressed for playing time in New England competing with the likes of Dont'a Hightower, Jerod Mayo and Jamie Collins at linebacker. McCarthy would probably come at a reduced cost coming off surgery.

Titans placed ILB Colin McCarthy (shoulder surgery) on injured reserve, ending his season.

The No. 109 overall pick of the 2011 draft, McCarthy will enter 2015 having missed 25 of his past 48 games. He's a free agent next offseason.

Titans ILB Colin McCarthy underwent shoulder surgery Friday.

He'll be placed on injured reserve, ending his season. A once promising fourth-round pick, McCarthy's career has been derailed by multiple injuries. He started just 12 games over the last two years and was competing for a rotational role. 26-year-old McCarthy will be an unrestricted free agent next offseason.

Titans ILB Colin McCarthy needs shoulder surgery and may miss the season.

Injured reserve is a real option. McCarthy's career has been in a consistent downward spiral since he was expected to make the leap and named a team captain in 2012. He's started just 12 games the past two seasons and is staring at a lost year. McCarthy, 26, is in the final year of his rookie contract.

Coach Ken Whisenhunt said ILB Colin McCarthy (shoulder) "is probably going to be out for awhile."

McCarthy is competing for a 53-man roster spot and may be nearing the end of his run in Tennessee. Once viewed as an up-and-coming MIKE linebacker, McCarthy simply can't stay healthy. He's battled ankle and hamstring issues the past two seasons, in addition to having his 2012 season cut short after a concussion. Wesley Woodyard and Zach Brown are the Titans' inside 'backers.

Titans LB Colin McCarthy suffered a shoulder injury in Saturday night's preseason opener.

McCarthy went down on a tackle in the third quarter, and was immediately ruled out for the game. Coach Ken Whisenhunt said he'll miss "significant time." He could be headed to injured reserve.

Titans coach Mike Munchak expects Colin McCarthy to be limited to a reserve linebacker role and special teams this season.

McCarthy was a starter and team captain in 2012, but fell behind Moise Fokou in training camp due to a hamstring injury. "He has to work his way back to where we feel he can do all the things he needs to do on an everyday basis," Munchak said. "Right now he is not where he needs to be to be an every down guy." The Titans have "no plans" to replace Fokou any time soon. Even when he gets fully healthy, McCarthy isn't expected to regain his starting job.

Titans LB Colin McCarthy (hamstring) returned to practice Thursday.

McCarthy had been sidelined three weeks. He won't suit up for Saturday's regular season dress rehearsal against the Falcons. McCarthy's return is too late for his starting chances, as he was officially overtaken by journeyman Moise Fokou earlier this week.

Coach Mike Munchak confirmed Sunday that Moise Fokou has won the Titans' starting middle linebacker job over Colin McCarthy.

On McCarthy's only practice of training camp, he pulled his hamstring. He has not returned, while Fokou has handled starting reps since OTAs. "I don't know what's gonna go on with Colin," Munchak said. "Right now, (Fokou) would be our starter. I don't know if Colin will be practicing this week, and next week. ... (Fokou) is the best linebacker that's lined up and practiced everyday."

Titans MLB Colin McCarthy (hamstring) is expected to miss at least one more week.

The oft-injured McCarthy is doing himself no favors on the training table. Moise Fokou started at middle linebacker in the Titans' preseason opener and played well. However, coach Mike Munchak said McCarthy remains very much a contender to win the job. Trust McCarthy in IDP leagues at your own peril.

Titans MLB Colin McCarthy will miss Tennessee's preseason opener with a right hamstring injury.

McCarthy has been plagued by injuries dating back deep into last season. The Titans expect him to return "in a week," but this will get Moise Fokou back running with the first-team defense. McCarthy's IDP reliability is very shaky.

Titans MLB Colin McCarthy has resumed practicing with the first-team defense.

Coming off an injury-plagued 2012, it took McCarthy a week to overcome journeyman Moise Fokou. "He’s done well I think toward these last 4-5 days of OTAs and the minicamp," coach Mike Munchak said. "He just looks physical. He looks bigger, stronger, confident again, just how he was last year at this time."

The Titans consider MLB Colin McCarthy 100 percent recovered from last year's ankle injuries and concussion entering camp.

"He’s healthy. He looks good," coach Mike Munchak said. "No concerns there as far as us having to limit him in any way." McCarthy is tentatively expected to hold off journeyman Moise Fokou for the starting middle linebacker spot.

The Nashville Tennessean believes the Titans' middle linebacker job is Colin McCarthy's to lose.

McCarthy ran with the second-team defense this spring, behind free-agent pickup Moise Fokou. The Titans were just trying to ease McCarthy back in, after he admitted he was slow to recover from last season's concussion and ankle injury. There's no reason why McCarthy shouldn't win the job if healthy.
