Eagles K Alex Henery is 1-of-3 on field goals this preseason.
Henery is on thin ice in Philly, as evidenced by last week's trade for Cody Parkey. The incumbent remains the favorite, but we'd look for a kicker carrying more confidence into Week 1 for our fantasy roster. Aug 27 - 9:36 AM

Coach Chip Kelly confirmed that Alex Henery is his No. 1 kicker.

Henery, who is facing competition in camp for the first time in his career, missed a 47-yarder in Friday's preseason game against the Bears. But UDFA Carey Spear aka "Murderleg" isn't a threat yet. "We need to get Alex as much work as he can possibly get," Kelly said. "It's clear in our mind that Alex is number one over Carey." The coach added that Henery has missed only two kicks in competitive situations during camp, going 5-of-5 from 50+ and 8-of-8 from 45-to-49 yards.

Alex Henery is facing competition this offseason for the first time in his career.

The Eagles signed Vanderbilt's Carey Spear, aka "Murderleg," as an UDFA. Henery connected on just 82.1 percent of his field goals last season, tied for 22nd in the league. He also struggled to kick the ball out of the end zone on kickoffs.

Coach Chip Kelly expressed displeasure with the performance of K Alex Henery in Saturday's Wild Card loss to the Saints.

Henery missed a 48-yard attempt and his kickoffs consistently sailed too low -- leading to a 39-yard return that set up the Saints' game-winning field goal as time expired. It's been a problem all year, as Henery couldn't even kick the ball out of the end zone in Minnesota's dome and he went just 23-of-28 on field goals. He should face competition in camp as he enters the final year of his contract in 2014.

Alex Henery was 5-of-5 on field goals in Sunday's Week 5 win over the Giants.

None of the field goals were from further than 41 yards out, but it's a confidence booster. Henery came into Week 5 at just 12-of-15 on the season. With the Eagles churning up yardage yet scuffling in the red zone, he makes for a decent fantasy kicking option.

Eagles K Alex Henery has missed a field goal in three straight games.

All three of Henery's misses were from 40-49 yards out, leaving him at 2-of-5 from that range on the season. He's going to get opportunities as part of the Eagles' fastbreak offense, but fantasy owners may want to put him on the shelf until he regains some confidence. Chargers K Nick Novak is a worthwhile plug-n-play this week as he'll be facing Oakland.

Coach Chip Kelly said he went for it on fourth down a lot at Oregon because he didn't have a strong kicker.

Kelly has a reputation for being a riverboat gambler that often eschews field goals on fourth down. "I think there's fallacy and reality," he said. "If you don't have a guy that can kick a long field goal, what are you going to do when the ball is on the 37-yard line?" Eagles kicker Alex Henery went 11-of-13 from 40-plus yards out last year. We still wouldn't be surprised if Kelly's fourth-down aggressiveness costs Henery a handful of field goal chances.

Eagles K Alex Henery reportedly kicked with a lot of confidence during offseason workouts.

Henery has no reason not to be confident. Over the final 12 games of last season, he went 16-for-16 on field goals. The second-year man is a strong fantasy kicking option in the Eagles' potentially explosive offense.

Eagles K Alex Henery has made 14 consecutive field goals.

After a somewhat slow start to the season, Henery has shown the form that made him a fourth-round pick in the draft. He hasn't missed since Week 4 and hit a 51-yarder in Week 16. Henery projects as a top-10 fantasy kicking option in 2012.

Special teams coordinator Bobby April isn't concerned about K Alex Henery after two back-breaking missed field goals in the fourth quarter last week.

April is working with Henery this week, but there's no real concern about a loss of confidence. "He was dying to kick the winning field goal," said April, "and that looked really genuine to me. That sounded, looked, unless he's a [heck] of an actor, he had every intention of kicking the winning field goal."

Eagles K Alex Henery went 4-for-5 on field goals this preseason.

Henery's lone miss came from 43 yards in last night's finale but he bounced back with a 49-yard make later in the game. Despite some early-camp inconsistency, we're confident using the rookie as a fantasy starter. The Eagles' offense is going to produce plenty of attempts -- and their first two games are in domes.

Coach Andy Reid is fine with his kicking situation after rookie Alex Henery's shaky training camp.

Tim McManus of Philly Sports Daily noted that Henery "missed too many kicks to leave camp feeling warm and fuzzy about the position." Reid insists he's not concerned with the rookie, though. Henery is a high-risk, high-reward fantasy kicker. Draft him and throw him back on the pile if he doesn't work out.

Eagles signed fourth-round K Alex Henery to a four-year contract.

An absolute star in NCAA, Henery is a Nebraska alum who will be immediately on the fantasy radar kicking in Philadelphia. He has plenty of leg strength and accuracy, and will benefit from the Birds' high-scoring, aggressive offense.

Special teams coach Bobby April believes fourth-round K Alex Henery will lead the team in points for "10, 15 years."

Said April of the most accurate kicker in NCAA history, "That's a big weapon, now." It's hardly news for a kicker to lead his team in scoring, but Henerey should garner fantasy consideration from the get-go. David Akers was top-six in the NFL in both field-goal attempts and extra-point attempts in each of the past three seasons.

The Eagles will not use No. 120 overall pick Alex Henery as a punter.

He'll be strictly a placekicker, replacing free agent David Akers. It sounds like the Eagles plan to bring back Saverio Rocca despite a miserable 2010 season. The Birds will likely be in the market for a punting upgrade soon.
