The Texans will start Shiloh Keo at strong safety during Danieal Manning's absence.
Coach Gary Kubiak hinted the Texans weren't even considering rookie D.J. Swearinger for the role, mentioning both Keo and CB/S Brandon Harris before their second-round pick. Keo started the first two games in place of Ed Reed. He has 14 tackles on the season and will be a low-end DB3 in IDP leagues. Mon, Oct 14, 2013 06:00:00 PM

With Ed Reed (hip) a game-time decision, the Texans will be forced to start Keo in their base 3-4 defense. Reed hasn't been ruled out for Week 1, but will be reduced to a limited role if active.

Texans promoted S Shiloh Keo from their practice squad.

A favorite of NFL Network draft guru Mike Mayock, Keo is a gung-ho special teams prospect. He will take injured S Dominique Barber's spot on the roster.

Fifth-round rookie Shiloh Keo is expected to be given a chance to start at strong safety for the Texans.

The coaching staff and front office are extremely high on Keo, and neither of the Texans' 2010 starting safeties are returning. At strong safety, Keo would compete with Dominique Barber, Torri Williams, and Troy Nolan, the latter of whom is the favorite for the job. If Keo doesn't win the position, he'll be heavily involved on all four special teams packages.

GM Rick Smith and coach Gary Kubiak singled out fifth-round SS Shiloh Keo as the one late-round pick for fans to keep an eye on this year.

Keo is a Wade Phillips favorite from the East-West Shrine Game. "He's physical," Smith said. "He's got range. He doesn't have top-end speed, but he's got enough to get over the top." Kubiak praised Keo's football IQ and hands. "If the ball is close, he's going to make the play and has the ability to take it back to the house," said Kubiak. Keo also averaged 14.2 yards on punt returns at Idaho. The Texans cut both starting safeties, leading us to believe Keo could end up starting as a rookie.

Texans selected Idaho S Shiloh Keo with the No. 144 overall pick in the 2011 NFL draft.

A four-year starter and All-Conference as a Senior, Keo is an aggressive in-the-box safety with solid run-stopping skills and a willingness to sell out against the blitz. With below-average speed and coverage skills, he's destined for a special teams role in Houston.
