49ers reserve OL Daniel Kilgore left Monday night's game against the Cardinals with a concussion and will not return.
Kilgore was injured on the opening kickoff. San Francisco already listed Joe Looney as an inactive, so they are down to veteran Leonard Davis as the only offensive line back-up. Kilgore was a fifth-round pick in 2011. Mon, Oct 29, 2012 09:10:00 PM

Daniel Kilgore is expected to compete for the 49ers' starting right guard job this season.

The Niners allowed veteran Adam Snyder to bolt for the division-rival Cardinals, leaving a hole at right guard. They traded up in the fifth round to get Kilgore last April. It's an area of need for the Niners.

49ers signed fifth-round G/C Daniel Kilgore to a four-year contract.

Kilgore finished his career at Appalachian State as a left tackle, but he's 6-foot-3, 308 with short arms. Most teams projected him as a guard, and the 49ers project Kilgore to center. It's a major need area in San Francisco.

The 49ers plan to use fifth-rounder Daniel Kilgore primarily at center.

It's the one position on the line that he didn't play at Appalachian State. Veteran free agent David Baas is expected to be re-signed, but that's no sure thing. Eric Heitmann, who suffered a neck injury last season, may be forced to retire.

49ers traded up with the Packers to select Appalachian State G Daniel Kilgore with the No. 163 overall pick in the 2011 NFL draft.

San Francisco surrendered the No. 174 and No. 231 picks to move up and take Kilgore, who is extremely raw but has great upside. His technique needs an overhaul, but he was known as a fierce, even nasty, competitor during his time in college. Thanks to only average athleticism, however, he's going to need a lot of coaching before he's ready to join the Niners rotation along their offensive line.
