Eagles waived WR Ronald Johnson, LBs Marcus Dowtin and Ryan Rau, and CB Chris Hawkins.
Johnson was drafted by the 49ers in the sixth round of the 2011 draft. He spent the 2011 campaign on Philly's practice squad, and he missed all of 2012 with a broken ankle. Rau made three tackles in four games last season. Dowtin and Hawkins have appeared in games for the Jets and Titans respectively. Thu, Apr 11, 2013 04:09:00 PM

Eagles WR Ron Johnson has been diagnosed with a dislocated left ankle, and likely break.

He'll be placed on injured reserve, ending his season. A sixth-round pick of the 49ers last season, Johnson was released at final cuts. He spent the year on the Eagles' practice squad before being added to the active roster for Week 17. Johnson should be back as a camp body next summer.

Eagles WR Ronald Johnson was carted off the practice field with a "gruesome" leg injury Monday.

Per beat writer Jeff McLane, Johnson's ankle could be heard "cracking" from the sideline. We typically wait for more details before reporting on training camp injuries, but it doesn't sound like there's any chance Johnson's injury isn't severe. The 2011 sixth-round pick is almost certainly headed to injured reserve.

Eagles promoted WR Ronald Johnson from the practice squad.

A sixth-round rookie out of USC, Johnson was among the 49ers' final cuts. Undersized at 5-foot-11, 199 pounds, Johnson projects as a replacement-level slot receiver with some special teams value.

According to CSN Bay Area's Matt Maiocco, sixth-rounder Ronald Johnson is "perhaps the most-impressive looking of the wideouts" early in camp.

Similar to Steve Smith coming out of USC, Johnson uses his initial quickness to gain separation in the slot. He's more slightly built, though, with a checkered injury history. Johnson will battle Ted Ginn for the No. 3 receiver role. He's a longshot for fantasy relevance in redraft leagues.

49ers signed sixth-round WR Ronald Johnson to a four-year contract.

Johnson is unimpressive physically with a small frame and short arms, but he could be an ideal fit as a slot receiver. He also offers punt return value. The beat writers in San Francisco have pegged Johnson as likely to make the team.

Scouts Inc.'s Matt Williamson suggests that sixth-round WR Ronald Johnson could have an impact out of the slot.

At 5'11/186, Johnson will be a slot receiver and compete for the punt-return job. Kyle Williams was unable to secure a similar role as a rookie, so there's room here. Still, the slot man would be nothing more than a fourth or fifth option in the passing game under Jim Harbaugh.

The 49ers expect sixth-round WR Ronald Johnson to compete for the punt-return job as a rookie.

Johnson isn't much of a receiver prospect with a slight build, long injury history, and a paltry 10.8 yards per reception at USC. He was second-team All Pac-10 as a returner, though, averaging 14.2 yards on 22 punts. Johnson essentially offers the same package as last year's sixth-rounder, Kyle Williams.

49ers selected USC WR Ronald Johnson with the No. 182 overall pick in the 2011 NFL draft.

Johnson was an outside receiver in Jeremy Bates and Lane Kiffin's pro-style USC offenses, but he is a slot prospect for the pros with a small build (5'11/186), pretty tiny hands (9"), and short arms (30 3/4"). Johnson does offer some return ability, but he has a checkered health history. We wouldn't expect much long-term fantasy value from Johnson in San Francisco or elsewhere.
