Jones was drafted in the sixth round last year to be a special teams ace. The Niners have a need for depth at receiver, but Jones isn't going to be the answer.

49ers promoted S Colin Jones from their practice squad.

They'll need to waive a player in a corresponding move this week. Jones was the 49ers' sixth-round pick in April, drafted specifically to contribute on special teams. He won't be an option on defense.

49ers signed No. 190 overall pick S Colin Jones to a four-year contract.

A second team all-Mountain West pick last season, Jones burned up the track with a 4.34 forty at his pro day. The 49ers envision him as a special teams demon, so he'll have a shot to make the team even with the team's glut of safeties.

The 49ers drafted sixth-round S Colin Jones with the idea that he'd be a special teams standout.

"There's a guy that I cannot wait to watch run down on a kickoff, full throttle, running his 4.3," coach Jim Harbaugh said. The 49ers now have seven safeties on the roster, so Jones will have to open some eyes in camp to stick.

Second team all-Mountain West last season, Jones ran a 4.34 40 at his Pro Day, and has been deemed by some as a late bloomer. The owner of solid measurables across the board, he should prove to be a solid special-teams player in San Francisco if he makes the team.
