Ravens RB Anthony Allen and OL Gino Gradkowski have passed their baseline tests after suffering concussions at Denver last week.

Both players are now cleared to play in the AFC Championship game. Allen is a third-string running back and special teamer. Gradkowski is the heir to Matt Birk's center job.

Ravens waived RB Anthony Allen.

Allen, a 2011 seventh-rounder out of Georgia Tech, ran with the first-teamers for much of the spring. But when the pads went on, he was outclassed by Bernard Pierce and struggled in pass protection. Pierce and Bobby Rainey will continue to compete for snaps behind Ray Rice.

Ravens RB Anthony Allen has allowed a sack in blitz pickup in each of Baltimore's first two preseason games.

The struggles in pass protection won't endear him to the coaching staff. Allen lost two yards on his lone carry in Friday's game, and muffed one of his three pass targets. He's rushed for seven yards on six carries through Baltimore's first two preseason games, adding one catch for 12 yards. Barring injury to Bernard Pierce, Allen will open the year no higher than third on the depth chart.

According to the Baltimore Sun, Ravens RB Anthony Allen "hasn't demonstrated much in the way of moves" during camp practices.

More of a straight-line power back, Allen isn't taking advantage of rookie Bernard Pierce's (hamstring) absence. The duo will duke it out for No. 2 duties in the preseason, but Pierce should win out despite Allen's year of experience in Baltimore's system. That's provided Pierce can get healthy, of course.

The Baltimore Sun believes it's "fair to say" Anthony Allen will open Ravens camp as the team's No. 2 tailback.

Allen worked with the first-team offense all spring while Ray Rice stayed away, and knows Cam Cameron's system better than rookie Bernard Pierce. Pierce, a third-round pick, remains the favorite for No. 2 back duties and will receive an "extensive" look this preseason. We prefer Pierce for Rice handcuffers.

Ravens RB Anthony Allen spent the majority of spring workouts with the first-team offense.

Third-rounder Bernard Pierce may have pushed Allen for first-team reps this week had he not tweaked his hamstring in Tuesday's practice. Allen will enter training camp as Ray Rice's primary backup, though Pierce has the talent edge to climb the depth chart by the end of preseason action.

Coach John Harbaugh acknowledged that the Ravens will add a veteran running back this offseason.

"Anthony Allen goes from third to potentially No. 1 if something happens," Harbaugh said of the Ravens' current backfield depth chart. "We think a lot of him, but we’ve got to look at some insurance, too.'' The Ravens have just three running backs under contract, and franchise player Ray Rice has yet to sign his tender. Third-stringer Damien Berry went undrafted in 2011.

According to Aaron Wilson of the Carroll County Times, Anthony Allen could have a chance to back up Ray Rice if Willis McGahee is cut.

It's a longshot even if McGahee is given his walking papers, as Allen would still need to unseat Jalen Parmele on the depth chart. We don't see that happening, especially if there's no preseason. Allen may have the size and running ability to be a short-yardage horse, but his lack of receiving skills will hurt him in the short-term.

Ravens selected Georgia Tech RB Anthony Allen with the No. 225 overall pick in the 2011 NFL draft.

A transfer from Louisville, Allen started both seasons for the Yellow Jackets, averaging 921.5 yards and a healthy 6.6 YPC. At 6'1/229, Allen is a straight-ahead power runner with little in the way of moves or receiving skills. He projects as a backup and short-yardage horse, though he'll start out behind Jalen Parmele on the Ravens' depth chart.
