Scott Tolzien completed 9-of-18 passes for 128 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions while adding two rushes for two yards Sunday in the Colts’ Week 1 loss to the Rams.
He was sacked four times for a loss of 29 yards and also committed a fumble, though the Colts were able to recover it. Tolzien was exactly as bad as his stat line would suggest and possibly even worse. He threw a pick-six on his first pass of the afternoon and repeated that feat in the third quarter. Tolzien was nearly picked a third time, prompting Donte Moncrief to commit a desperate facemask penalty on Nickell Robey-Coleman just to break up the pass. The seven-year vet looked overmatched in all aspects, forcing bad passes into tight coverage while showing remarkably little awareness both in and outside the pocket. Jacoby Brissett spelled Tolzien in the third quarter and we’d imagine he’ll be the favorite to start next week against the Cardinals. Sep 10 - 8:14 PM

Date:

Scott Tolzien will start the Colts' Week 1 matchup against the Rams.

Jacoby Brissett was acquired over the weekend, but GM Chris Ballard said he views that as a long-term move and not a short-term fix. Perhaps Brissett will get a look if Luck is still not back in a couple weeks and Tolzien is really struggling, but Tolzien should hold onto the job while Luck is sidelined. Tolzien starting is bad news for all the Colts' position players, but it makes the Rams DST an intriguing streaming option.

Colts coach Chuck Pagano declined to name a starting quarterback after Saturday's preseason dress rehearsal against the Steelers.

"They both moved the offense and did a good job," he said of Scott Tolzien and Stephen Morris. Pagano continues to leave the door open for Morris, though Tolzien remains the odds-on favorite to start against the Rams in Week 1. Whoever comes out on top will be a massive downgrade for the Colts, who are likely to be without Andrew Luck (shoulder) for the first handful of games.

Scott Tolzien completed 7-of-10 passes for 123 yards with one interception and rushed once for six yards Saturday in the Colts’ third preseason game.

Tolzien didn’t have his top receiver for this one—T.Y. Hilton was getting a maintenance day—but that didn’t stop him from having his best game of the preseason. He got off to a hot start by threading a 55-yard completion to Donte Moncrief on the Colts’ first play from scrimmage, though it was just a simple screen that Moncrief advanced on a missed tackle. Tolzien was picked early in the second quarter on a pass intended for Jack Doyle but otherwise kept the mistakes to a minimum. With Andrew Luck making little tangible progress in his recovery from offseason shoulder surgery, Tolzien will likely be under center for Week 1 against the Rams.
Aug 26 - 10:42 PM

Scott Tolzien completed 10-of-14 passes for 70 yards in Saturday’s preseason game.

Tolzien’s completion percentage was solid, but his 5.0 yards per pass attempt isn’t going to cut it. The Colts went three and out on all three of their drives against the Dallas starters and scored on just one of six drives while Tolzien was in the game. To be fair to Tolzien, he has largely worked with a skeleton crew at wide receiver this entire offseason, but the Colts’ offense has just eight first downs on nine possessions with their "first-team" offense in the game so far in the preseason. At this juncture, it’s close to a lock that Tolzien starts at minimum Week 1 of the regular season for Indianapolis. Andrew Luck’s absence obviously compromises all the Colts’ skill players for fantasy purposes.

Colts OC Rob Chudzinski said the team will have to alter the playbook if Scott Tolzien is forced to start.

"We'll make those adjustments if that's the case down the road," Chudzinski said. "Every week we tailor it some to the opponent, some to who may be playing, skill-wise, O-line-wise, quarterback-wise and all those type of things all go into it." In Tolzien's one start last season, the Colts focused much more on the short passing game, with 16 of his 22 completions going for 10 yards or less. T.Y. Hilton managed just three catches for 54 yards in that game and has seen his averages go down across the board when playing without Andrew Luck. It looks like Luck will miss at most a couple games if any, but it is still a short-term concern for Indy's pass catchers.

Scott Tolzien completed two-of-five passes for 24 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions Sunday in the Colts’ preseason loss to the Lions.

He was sacked once for a loss of three yards. Tolzien was mostly off the mark, only completing a four-yard screen to Jack Doyle and a 20-yard strike over the middle to Brandon Williams. Tolzien got in and out quickly, playing just three series before giving way to undrafted rookie Phillip Walker. With Andrew Luck’s return date still a moving target, the Colts will surely monitor Tolzien’s preseason reps in case he has to start Week 1.
Aug 13 - 4:52 PM

Scott Tolzien completed 22-of-36 passes for 205 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions while contributing six rushing yards on three carries in the Colts' Week 12 loss to the Steelers.

Tolzien left a ton of points on the board by having two drives stall out on the goal line. Both of his interceptions came in the fourth quarter with Indy in desperation mode. He actually made a decent throw to Donte Moncrief for his only touchdown of the night, placing it low and away so only Moncrief could get it. Tolzien routinely overthrew open receivers and was molasses slow whenever he tried to tuck and run. He was passable on Thursday but still a major downgrade from Andrew Luck (concussion). Hopefully Luck will be back next week against the Jets.

Colts signed QB Scott Tolzien to a two-year contract.

Tolzien gives the Colts a backup for Andrew Luck after releasing Josh Freeman/Ryan Lindley and losing Matt Hasselbeck to retirement. He's attempted just one pass since 2013 and could face competition. Stephen Morris is the only other quarterback on Indy's roster.

Free agent QB Scott Tolzien will visit the Colts on Thursday and Friday.

Chicago has also shown interest in Tolzien. The Colts are looking to replace Matt Hasselbeck, who announced his retirement earlier this week. With Tolzien likely headed elsewhere, Brett Hundley is taking over as Aaron Rodgers' backup.

Impending free agent QB Scott Tolzien is hoping for a shot at a starting job.

"I feel like I've improved every year and played for two great organizations," Tolzien said. "I know there's been a lot of backups in Green Bay that have gone on and been given the chance to start in other places. We'll see what happens, but that would be great if it happened." With Brett Hundley ready to take over the No. 2 job in Green Bay, Tolzien will be looking for work elsewhere. He struggled in two starts in 2013, but he set the preseason on fire two years ago. Tolzien may be given a chance to "compete" with a desperate team, but he is unlikely to earn a starting job this summer.

Packers backup QB Scott Tolzien is being evaluated for a concussion.

Tolzien went to the locker room after the injury and was replaced by rookie Brett Hundley in Sunday's preseason game. Tolzien remains locked in as Aaron Rodgers' backup. The concussion shouldn't threaten Tolzien's No. 2 job.

The Packers will move forward with Scott Tolzien as the No. 2 quarterback.

Incumbent backup Matt Flynn was not re-signed. Tolzien looked like a fish out of water when he filled in for Aaron Rodgers in 2013, but he's reportedly improved since. He's impressed coaches with his improved mechanics at OTAs, even showing promise in the team's two-minute offense. Fifth-round pick Brett Hundley is No. 3 on the Packers' quarterback depth chart.

Packers re-signed QB Scott Tolzien to a one-year, $1.375 million contract.

The Packers like Tolzien's grit and moxie in their quarterback room, but they'll be searching for upgrades to back up Aaron Rodgers, most likely in the draft. Tolzien, 27, did show well last preseason, completing 68 percent of his 56 passes for 477 yards (8.5 YPA) with three touchdowns and no interceptions.

Packers coach Mike McCarthy says free agent Scott Tolzien is "definitely an ascending player."

Tolzien is mostly an unknown, having competed in just three games in four NFL seasons. McCarthy gives him a nice endorsement, but Tolzien would probably be lucky to land a backup job this offseason.
