Eagles waived/failed physical RB William Powell.
Powell was claimed off waivers from the Cardinals on Wednesday. He was never a realistic candidate for a roster spot with the Eagles and will look to continue his career elsewhere. Fri, Jul 26, 2013 10:16:00 AM

Eagles claimed RB William Powell off waivers from the Cardinals and waived WR/PR Nick Miller.

Philadelphia is building a large stable of tailbacks as it gears up for Chip Kelly's run-dominated offense. They've already got LeSean McCoy, Bryce Brown, Felix Jones, Chris Polk, and Matthew Tucker. Powell will be extremely stretched for a roster spot, however, and is likely only around for insurance.

Cardinals waived RB William Powell.

Powell, 25, didn't stand a chance of making the 53-man roster after the Cardinals added Rashard Mendenhall, Andre Ellington, and Stepfan Taylor to the backfield mix. Powell appeared in 13 games last season, starting one, and ran for 217 yards on 60 carries behind the worst offensive line in the sport.

Cardinals re-signed exclusive rights free agent RB William Powell to a one-year, $480,000 contract.

Powell, 25, appeared in 13 games for Arizona last season, starting once. The former Kansas State Wildcat rushed for 217 yards on 60 carries (3.62 YPC), while reeling in 19 passes for 132 yards. Powell also returned kicks. He'll battle for a roster spot behind Rashard Mendenhall and Ryan Williams this summer.

Cardinals tendered exclusive rights free agent RBs William Powell and Alfonso Smith.

Powell was part of the merry-go-round at running back for the Cardinals last season, starting one game. He rushed for just 217 yards on 60 carries, though, and was typically relegated to handling just kick return duties. Smith is a special teams player. Both players will be fighting for roster spots under a new staff.

William Powell got the Week 17 start in the Cardinals backfield and rushed for 52 yards on 14 carries against the 49ers.

It was Powell's first career start, and he was backed up by La'Rod Stephens-Howling while Beanie Wells rode the pine. In his first official season, the former Kansas State back rushed for 216 yards on 59 carries. Powell added 19 catches for 132 yards in the receiving game. He's an exclusive rights free agent this offseason and will likely be brought back for another look.

William Powell rushed five times for 20 yards and caught two passes for 13 yards in the Cardinals' Week 14 loss to the Seahawks.

Powell started off behind Beanie Wells, but quickly came on for more and more reps as the game got out of hand. He played ahead of LaRod Stephens-Howling (three touches, seven yards). There's not a single Cardinals skill player worth using against the Lions in Week 15.

William Powell rushed three times for 11 yards in Arizona's Week 12 loss to the Rams, adding six catches for 63 yards.

With La'Rod Stephens-Howling (ribs) AWOL after the game's opening minutes, Powell operated as the Cardinals' third-down and change-of-pace back. The 74 yards from scrimmage were a season high, though Powell benefitted from the checkdowns of overwhelmed rookie quarterback Ryan Lindley. Even if LSH isn't ready for Week 13, Powell isn't worth re-adding in fantasy leagues.

Cardinals RB William Powell rushed just once for three yards in Week 9 against the Packers.

Powell has clearly fallen well behind La'Rod Stephens-Howling, who touched the ball 19 times in Sunday's loss. Drop Powell during Arizona's Week 10 bye.

William Powell rushed just four times for 13 yard and added one reception for five yards at Minnesota in Week 7.

Powell was banished to the doghouse in favor of La'Rod Stephens-Howling after fumbling on the opening kickoffs. He spent the next series on the sidelines with a football in his hands, watching LSH catch fire against a tough defense. Powell doesn't need to be rostered in 12-team leagues heading into a Week 8 bout with the 49ers.
Sun, Oct 21, 2012 05:54:00 PM

William Powell rushed for 70 yards on 13 carries against the Bills in Week 6.

Powell added one catch for eight yards. La'Rod Stephens-Howling got the "start," but Powell acted as the lead back on Sunday. It took Powell and the run game a while to get going, but once he did, it wasn't hard for him to pick up major chunks of yards. Stephens-Howling mustered just 22 yards on 11 carries, so Powell should handle much of the work again in Week 7 versus Minnesota.

William Powell (head) and La'Rod Stephens-Howling (hip) are both listed as probable for Week 6.

They'll suit up against the Bills. How they divvy up carries remains the question, but our best guess is LSH will "start" and monopolize third-down touches, while Powell carries the load on first and second down. Alfonso Smith should also get a touch or two. Powell is the No. 25 running back in Chris Wesseling's Week 6 ranks, with LSH checking in at No. 34.

According to the Arizona Republic, the Cardinals are not likely to trade for a running back with Ryan Williams and Beanie Wells sidelined.

Any player acquired would be a mere stopgap until Wells returns in November. Beat writer Kent Somers confirms the Cardinals are "not enamored" with any of the available street free agents after getting burned by Chester Taylor a year ago. Arizona will proceed with the underwhelming trio of William Powell, La'Rod Stephens-Howling, and Alfonso Smith.

William Powell (head) is practicing fully this week.

Powell suffered the head injury in last Thursday night's loss to the Rams, but he looks good to go after the ten-day layoff. The preseason star and former undrafted free agent is tentatively expected to lead Arizona's backfield in rushing attempts Sunday against the Bills. He'll be a low-end flex option.
Wed, Oct 10, 2012 07:25:00 PM

ESPN's Adam Schefter stated on SportsCenter Wednesday that William Powell will "likely" get the first crack at replacing Ryan Williams as the Cardinals' lead ball carrier.

"Unfamiliar name right now to some people," Schefter said of Powell, "but he did lead the NFL in rushing this preseason, and there's a buzz in the Cardinals' organization about him. The players believe he can do it. He'll have to prove he can during the regular season. But there are some people in the Cardinals' organization who believe Powell can get the job done for Arizona."
