Steelers DE Travis Kirschke is expected to retire this offseason.
There had been no previous indication of Kirschke's plans. The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review offhandedly tucked the information into a report about Nick Eason's re-signing. It's all hands on deck for the Steelers, who have lost four straight games. Kirschke will give the defensive line rotation a small boost as a run stopper.

Ziggy Hood and Nick Eason played well in his place, vaulting the Steelers to No. 1 in the league in run defense. Once they get Troy Polamalu (knee) back, the defense will be hitting on all cylinders again.

Kirschke may not be ready for Week 10 either. Nick Eason will start, with rookies Ziggy Hood and Sunny Harris getting more playing time. The Steelers will likely be without three defensive starters Monday in Ryan Clark, Lawrence Timmons and Kirschke.

Steelers DE Travis Kirschke (calf) will almost certainly sit out Monday night's game in Denver.

Kirschke has a torn left calf muscle and probably won't be ready for a couple more weeks. Nick Eason will replace Kirshcke at left defensive end, where the Steelers have already lost Aaron Smith (shoulder) for the season. Rookies Ziggy Hood and Sunny Harris will also see more snaps.

Kirschke missed practice Monday and coach Mike Tomlin didn't sound too optimistic about his status. Kirschke hurt the calf in the Week 7 win over Minnesota.

Steelers DE Travis Kirschke left the Week 7 win over Minnesota with a calf injury.

Kirschke was already replacing Aaron Smith, who is done for the year with a shoulder injury. Nick Eason stepped in for Kirschke last week. Beat writer Ed Bouchette called Kirschke's injury "bad," but he does have an extra week to heal as the Steelers are on a bye.

Travis Kirschke will step in as the Steelers' starting right defensive end while Brett Keisel (calf) is sidelined.

Keisel could miss up to two months. Kirschke should be solid against the run, but will play in a rotation and won't be near the pressure player Keisel is.

Steelers re-signed DE Travis Kirschke to a two-year contract.

Kirschke gets a two-year $2.28 million deal. He showed some signs of decline while filling in for an injured Aaron Smith last season, but he's been a quality backup defensive end for Pittsburgh since 2004.

LB James Harrison is expected to be back in action. Pittsburgh has been very fortunate avoiding major injuries this season.

The Steelers reached a four-year agreement with DT Travis Kirshke (49ers).

The $6.4 million deal includes a $1.1 million signing bonus. It also means that the Patriots will officially acquire DT Rodney Bailey tomorrow. Bailey was signed to a $1.3 million offer sheet last week by New England.
