Date:

The Vikings want to re-sign free agent Matt Asiata.

Asiata was mostly limited to special teams last year, playing 209 snaps. He wouldn’t return as more than a short-yardage/pass-block specialist.
Mar 2 - 6:49 PM

Matt Asiata (quad) was limited in Wednesday’s practice.

Asiata totaled 25 yards on four touches in Sunday's win. Jerick McKinnon will see more snaps behind Adrian Peterson if Asiata doesn't play this week.

Matt Asiata rushed three times for two yards in Saturday's preseason game.

He added two catches for an additional 13 yards. Provided he sits out Thursday's finale, the fantasy folk hero finishes the summer with 15 carries for 60 yards. He caught eight passes for 57 additional yards. Asiata is a firm third on the depth chart behind Adrian Peterson and Jerick McKinnon.

Vikings re-signed RB Matt Asiata to a one-year contract.

Asiata was set to become a restricted free agent but had no chance of earning the $1.54 million tender. Instead, he's coming back on an "incentive-laced" one-year deal. He'll compete for the No. 3 job if Adrian Peterson is back in the fold.

The Vikings are working on a new deal with restricted free agent Matt Asiata.

It makes sense, given Adrian Peterson's uncertain future in Minnesota. He's not a burner, but Asiata has the frame to be a useful short yardage back. Asiata led the team with nine rushing scores in 2014, easily a career-high. He'll carry vulture potential in 2015 if Peterson isn't back with the Vikes.

Matt Asiata rushed for 91 yards on 19 carries and caught two balls for 17 yards in the Vikings' Week 17 win over the Bears.

A fullbackish grinder, Asiata wound up spending most of the 2014 season as Minnesota's feature back due to Adrian Peterson's suspension and Jerick McKinnon's injury. Asiata finished with 164 carries for 570 yards (3.48 YPC) and ten all-purpose touchdowns, to go with 44 receptions. Asiata can pass protect and gets what's blocked, and for those reasons he may have a long NFL career. But he isn't a starting-caliber running back. The 27-year-old will be a restricted free agent in March. We suspect the Vikings will tender Asiata at the lowest possible level, or not tender him at all.

Matt Asiata rushed 16 times for 58 yards and two touchdowns and caught three balls for 19 yards in the Vikings' Week 16 loss to the Dolphins.

Asiata gave Minnesota a quick first-quarter lead on a one-yard touchdown run. Miami has struggled mightily in run defense for the past month-plus and Minnesota looked to take advantage, utilizing FB Jerome Felton ahead of Asiata in I and offset-I formations. Asiata also converted a two-point conversion late in the fourth quarter, and the game-winning touchdown just plays later following a Jarvis Landry lost fumble deep in Dolphins territory. Asiata paid Week 16 fantasy dividends, but continues to be an entirely TD-dependent fantasy commodity. The Vikings will close out their season against the Bears in Week 17.

Matt Asiata (foot) is listed as probable for Week 16.

Asiata will continue to lead the Vikings' backfield against Miami. He should see 15-20 touches against a Dolphins run defense that's allowing an average of 192 yards over the last four games. Asiata is a top-25 running back play for Week 16.

Matt Asiata (foot) remained limited on Thursday.

Asiata is fully expected to lead the Vikings' backfield against Miami. He'll be a borderline RB2 for the fantasy finals, one who will hurt owners if he doesn't find the end zone.

Matt Asiata (foot) was limited on Wednesday.

Asiata played the majority of snaps in Sunday's loss. There's been no indication his foot injury will keep him out this week. Asiata is a touchdown-dependent FLEX option against Miami.

Matt Asiata out-snapped Ben Tate 45-13 in Sunday's loss to the Lions.

Joe Banyard was third on the totem pole with 11 snaps. It reiterates what we already knew -- this coaching staff loves them some Asiata. Over the last three games, he's averaging 14.6 carries, 4.6 catches and has scored one touchdown. We know the volume will be there against the Dolphins Sunday, making Asiata a flex option versus a sagging Miami run defense.

Matt Asiata rushed 11 times for 36 yards and a touchdown and caught seven balls for 50 yards in the Vikings' Week 15 loss to the Lions.

Continuing to operate as Minnesota's feature back, Asiata got the Vikings on the board with a first-quarter two-yard touchdown run. The Vikings trust Asiata more than Ben Tate and Joe Banyard, particularly in pass protection. So that means Asiata will continue to get lead back work despite his ineffectiveness on the field. Sort of like a younger version of Steven Jackson at this stage of S-Jax's career, Asiata will be a touchdown-dependent flex option in Week 16 against the Dolphins.

Speaking Monday, Vikings coach Mike Zimmer said Matt Asiata was given too many carries in Sunday's overtime win over the Jets.

Asiata out-touched Ben Tate and Joe Banyard 22-5. He averaged only 2.8 yards per carry, and managed all of 10 yards on three catches. Asiata has established beyond a reasonable doubt that he's a sub-replacement level player at running back. He won't be on the RB3 radar against the Lions' ferocious run defense in Week 15.
Mon, Dec 8, 2014 03:15:00 PM

Matt Asiata rushed for 59 yards on 19 carries in the Vikings' Week 14 win over the Jets.

Asiata was an every-down back, with Ben Tate and Joe Banyard combining for just five touches. He was shut down by the Jets' run defense, averaging 2.8 YPC. With Jerick McKinnon on I.R. and Adrian Peterson's status with the Vikings up in the air, Asiata should remain the primary back going forward. Asiata won't be more than a low-end RB3 for Week 15 against the Lions.
