The Detroit Free Press considers Matt Asiata on the outside looking in for a roster spot.
Asiata got in some minicamp reps, but is behind the rest of the running backs after signing in late May. He has value as a short-yardage specialist, but was signed as veteran insurance. Zach Zenner and Dwayne Washington are cost controlled with more upside. Jul 1 - 4:14 PM

Lions signed RB Matt Asiata.

Asiata worked out for Detroit earlier this month, but wasn't immediately signed. He adds a short-yardage option behind Ameer Abdullah and Theo Riddick. Asiata will compete with Zach Zenner and Dwayne Washington for a roster spot.
May 26 - 8:36 PM

The Lions did not sign free agent Matt Asiata after his weekend tryout.

Although coach Jim Caldwell has never been known for his truthfulness with the media, he indicated the Lions are satisfied with their current backfield stable. "We have a pretty good group of guys," Caldwell said. "We’ll see what happens, but I think overall, we’ve got some pretty good depth there."

Free agent RB Matt Asiata will work out for the Lions.

For when Joique Bell is too explosive, there's Asiata. The touchdown vulture extraordinaire had yet to make a visit in free agency. Going on 30, Asiata is probably past the point where he should be on a 53-man roster.
May 2 - 4:25 PM

According to Chris Tomasson of the St. Paul Pioneer Press, the door is "not closed" on free agent Matt Asiata returning to the Vikings.

He's exploring his options while waiting for the top running backs to sign. Asiata is a plodder if there ever was one, and was atrocious in short-yardage situations last year, particularly at the goal line. As of now, the only running backs on the Vikings' roster are Jerick McKinnon, C.J. Ham and Bishop Sankey.
Mar 11 - 1:14 PM

Matt Asiata rushed eight times for 14 yards in the Vikings' Week 17 win over the Bears, adding three catches for 31 yards on three targets.

In Asiata fashion, he finished the season with a team-high six rushing scores. But Asiata managed just 3.32 YPC on his 121 totes, finishing with 402 yards. He added 32 catches for 263 yards. With Adrian Peterson missing most of the season with a knee injury, Asiata and Jerick McKninnon essentially split the work. Asiata will be a free agent entering his age-30 season.
Jan 1 - 4:57 PM

Matt Asiata rushed six times for 30 yards in the Vikings' Week 16 loss to the Packers, adding three receptions for 34 additional yards.

Asiata got out-touched 16-9 by Jerick McKinnon, and was the Vikings' clear No. 2 running back. That should remain the case for Week 17, unless Adrian Peterson returns, in which Asiata would be the No. 3.

Matt Asiata (ankle, questionable) will play Sunday in Week 15 against the Colts.

ESPN's Adam Schefter said he'll be used as part of a three-back rotation, which doesn't sound promising for Adrian Peterson's outlook. AP carries the most upside of the Vikings' three backs, but his role is still up in the air coming off a torn meniscus. Fantasy owners playing in the semifinals this week should be looking for safer options.

Matt Asiata was added to the Vikings' injury report as questionable with an ankle injury.

Asiata was listed on the injury report with an ankle injury, but the Vikings' website also says he's dealing with an illness. Asiata has two days to get healthy ahead of Sunday's bout with the Colts. On the off chance Asiata couldn't play, Jerick McKinnon's fantasy projection would see a significant surge.

Matt Asiata rushed 11 times for 37 yards and a touchdown and caught 2-of-2 targets for 14 yards in the Vikings' Week 14 win over the Jaguars.

Although Asiata got in once from one yard out, he was stuffed repeatedly in goal-line situations, including a lost fumble that very nearly proved costly. Asiata is entirely ineffective, but the Vikings trust him so they continue to play him. He'll be a low-floor, touchdown-or-bust flex option in Week 15 against the Colts.

Matt Asiata rushed six times for 30 yards in the Vikings' Week 13 loss to the Cowboys.

Asiata "added" one catch for -3 yards. At one point, Asiata took a handoff out of the Wild Cat formation. It was that kind of night for the Vikings. Asiata will remain a touchdown-or-bust RB4/FLEX against the Jags in Week 14.
Fri, Dec 2, 2016 12:16:00 AM

Matt Asiata rushed five times for 27 yards and a touchdown in the Vikings' Week 12 loss to the Lions, adding three receptions for 14 additional yards.

Asiata cashed in the Vikings' lone goal-line carry for a five-yard touchdown. Still splitting work with Jerick McKinnon and not seeing near enough money-zone carries to make it worth fantasy owners' while, Asiata is an RB4, even in touchdown-heavy leagues.

Matt Asiata rushed five times for 20 yards and a touchdown and caught his lone target for a gain of seven in the Vikings' Week 11 win over the Cardinals.

Asiata was the No. 2 "big back" complement behind Jerick McKinnon, who led the backfield with 15 touches. Asiata chipped in a goal-line score, which is the only real way he's able to provide any fantasy value. Against the Lions in Week 12, Asiata will be a low-floor, touchdown-or-bust flex option.
Sun, Nov 20, 2016 05:59:00 PM

Matt Asiata had nine carries for 13 yards and a touchdown in Week 10 against Washington.

Asiata remained in a committee with Jerick McKinnon and Ronnie Hillman. He was stuffed on consecutive plays before scoring his one-yard touchdown. Asiata finished with more carries than McKinnon but played fewer snaps. He'll be a touchdown-dependent RB3 in Week 11.
Sun, Nov 13, 2016 04:49:00 PM

Matt Asiata managed 27 yards on 9 carries and caught 2-of-2 targets for 14 yards in the Vikings' Week 9 loss to the Lions.

The Vikings used a three-way RBBC against the Lions, giving Asiata 11 touches, Ronnie Hillman 8, and Jerick McKinnon 7. Hillman was most effective in the group. For the second week in a row, Asiata was stuffed repeatedly on short-yardage and goal-line chances. He will barely be an RB3 when the Vikings face the Redskins next.
