Matt Asiata rushed 13 times for 36 yards and added 5 catches for 48 yards and a touchdown against the Patriots Week 2.
Asiata plodded to a 2.8 yard-per-carry average on the ground, and was not very effective in the passing game aside from a 25-yard touchdown grab in the first quarter. He is not a very good runner, and the Vikings will have to find a better option if they hope to have some offensive success this season. Despite his struggles, workload will keep Asiata an RB3 as long as he starts. Sep 14 - 4:50 PM

Date:

Matt Asiata is expected to start Sunday's game against the Patriots.

ESPN Vikings reporter Ben Goessling says Jerick McKinnon "could get some carries too, but Asiata figures to get the majority of the work." It's not a surprise, as the plodding yet reliable Asiata ran ahead of the third-round rookie for the entire preseason. Asiata also started two games last season (for the old regime), totaling 44 carries for 166 yards and a flukish three touchdowns along with five catches for 13 yards. If you need a plug-n-play for this week, he's your man. If you want to stash a true freak athlete who might eventually get a big chance, McKinnon is the add.

Running as the Vikings' early-down back in the absence of Adrian Peterson, Matt Asiata rushed 11 times for 48 yards in Saturday's preseason game, adding two catches for 34 yards.

Third-rounder Jerick McKinnon operated as Asiata's change-of-pace back. The implication being, it would be Asiata who handles early-down duties were AD to go down with injury this season. Asiata now has 24 rushes for 80 yards (3.3 YPC) and one score this preseason. McKinnon is the far-more talented player, but for now Asiata's experience is winning out.
Aug 24 - 12:25 AM

Matt Asiata had three carries for 13 yards and a touchdown in Friday night's preseason opener.

Asiata started with Adrian Peterson out. He didn't leave the field on Minnesota's opening drive, playing ahead of rookie Jerick McKinnon on third downs. Asiata's touchdown came on a goal-line carry from one-yard out. For now, he remains ahead of McKinnon as the Vikings' No. 2 back.
Aug 8 - 9:47 PM

Matt Asiata is getting the majority of second-team reps at OTAs.

The Vikings see Jerick McKinnon as a third-down back for the most part right now. It leaves the slow-footed, 234-pound Asiata behind Adrian Peterson on early downs. He'll have a little goal-line appeal if Peterson ever misses time, but he's not a strong handcuff. McKinnon's raw athleticism should allow him to surge ahead of Asiata by midseason.

Vikings GM Rick Spielman said the team is in the market for running back depth.

Matt Asiata is currently lightly penciled in as the No. 2 behind Adrian Peterson. Zach Line, Joe Banyard, and Bradley Randle round out the depth chart. The free-agent market has a few capable runners still available, but it wouldn't be a surprise to see Spielman use a day-two pick on a running back. Asiata lacks lateral agility and burst and is best suited for No. 3 duties.

Vikings re-signed exclusive rights free agent RB Matt Asiata.

Asiata rushed for 51 yards and three TDs on 30 carries in Week 15 against the Eagles before rumbling for 115 yards in the finale. He didn't touch the ball all season outside of those two games. With Toby Gerhart a free agent, Asiata could climb the depth chart and become Adrian Peterson's primary backup, although super sleeper Zach Line might have something to say about that.
Mar 5 - 3:47 PM

Matt Asiata rushed 14 times for 115 yards and lost two yards on two receptions in the Vikings' Week 17 win over Detroit.

Asiata got the start with Adrian Peterson (foot) and Toby Gerhart (hamstring) inactive. A fullback-tailback hybrid, Asiata wound up playing extensively in two games due to injuries, finishing with this stat line and 30-51-3 in Week 15. With Gerhart headed to free agency, it's not out of the realm of possibility that Asiata could be Peterson's primary backup in 2014. He'll surely face competition, however.

The Vikings will start Matt Asiata at tailback in Week 17 against the Lions.

Adrian Peterson is doubtful, and Toby Gerhart has been ruled out. Asiata flukishly rushed 30 times for a paltry 51 yards in a Week 15 start against the Eagles, scoring three touchdowns. This week, he's expected to rotate with Joe Banyard against a tough Detroit run defense. Asiata will not be a recommended fantasy option in daily or standard leagues that extend into Week 17.

Updating a previous item, Matt Asiata is inactive for Week 16 at Cincinnati.

He only would've been a third stringer if active, but Asiata will not play Sunday due to a hamstring injury. Adrian Peterson will get the start.

Vikings RB Matt Asiata (ankle) is listed as questionable for Week 16.

We don't know whether Asiata is going to play Sunday at Cincinnati. We do know he won't be a fantasy option with Adrian Peterson and Toby Gerhart back.

Vikings RB Matt Asiata (ankle) remained out of practice Thursday.

The fantasy folk hero is trending in the wrong direction for Week 16. Even were Asiata to suit up, his moment in the sun has come and gone with both Adrian Peterson (foot) and Toby Gerhart (hamstring) expected to play.

Matt Asiata (ankle) did not practice Wednesday.

Asiata's 30-carry workload last week against the Eagles may have been too much for him. With Adrian Peterson (foot) and Toby Gerhart (hamstring) expected to return this week, Asiata can safely be dropped in all formats.
Wed, Dec 18, 2013 05:58:00 PM

Matt Asiata rushed 30 times for 51 yards with three touchdowns in Sunday's 48-30 Week 15 win over the Eagles.

With Adrian Peterson (foot) and Toby Gerhart (hamstring) both inactive, the Vikings had no choice but to turn to third-stringer Asiata. It was perhaps the worst three-touchdown performance in NFL history. Asiata showed absolutely zero burst, lateral agility or vision as he did a poor man's Jackie "The Elephant" Battle impersonation. Two of his scores came from one yard out and the last was from five yards out. Even if Peterson and Gerhart both sit out at Cincy in Week 16, Asiata would be a desperation TD-dependent fantasy play only.
Sun, Dec 15, 2013 04:30:00 PM

Matt Asiata is expected to start Sunday's game against the Eagles with Adrian Peterson (foot) and Toby Gerhart (hamstring) inactive.

Asiata, a plodding 6'0/234 former undrafted free agent, goes from third string to first string in one week. We'd keep expectations very low. The Vikings will use practice squad callup Joe Banyard and fullback Jerome Felton for some reps, and the Eagles could very well sprint out to an early lead. If Minny is going to move the ball, it's likely to be through the air against the Eagles' No. 29 pass defense. Asiata is our No. 38 play at the running back spot this week.
