Matt Asiata rushed 12 times for 55 yards and added 25 yards on six catches Week 7 against the Eagles.
With Jerick McKinnon in and out of the lineup with an ankle injury, Asiata was the primary back in the second half. He had a couple nice third down conversions including a long run on third-and-13 in the third quarter, but he was stuffed more often than not. Asiata will be interesting if McKinnon is not ready to face the Bears on Monday night. Oct 23 - 4:49 PM

Matt Asiata rushed 14 times for 55 yards and a touchdown and caught all three of his targets for an additional 46 yards Week 5 against the Texans.

Asiata once again played well behind Jerick McKinnon when the game was still in doubt, but he made two big plays in the passing game and vultured a one-yard touchdown in the first quarter. He also looked good with the Vikings in clock-killing mode late in the game. Asiata is going to find the end zone several times this season, but picking out those games will be difficult. He will be no better than a desperation flier after the bye.
Oct 9 - 5:10 PM

Matt Asiata rushed six times for six yards and one touchdown in the Vikings' Week 4 win over the Giants.

Classic Asiata. He created nothing on the ground, but was there to vulture a goal-line touchdown in predictable fashion. He also caught both of his targets for 12 yards, but isn't worth owning outside of TD-heavy leagues. Jerick McKinnon out-touched him 21-8 and out-gained him by 78 yards.
Oct 4 - 12:19 AM

Matt Asiata rushed six times for 15 yards in the Vikings' Week 3 win over the Panthers.

He added a four-yard reception. Asiata "started," but got out-touched 17-7 by Jerick McKinnon and soundly out-snapped. He's the clear No. 2 in Minnesota's backfield, albeit still likely to vulture touchdowns. Running behind an extremely weak offensive line, it's hard to see Asiata becoming a weekly RB3 factor.
Sep 25 - 5:43 PM

Matt Asiata has been announced as the Vikings' Week 3 starter at running back.

We still think Jerick McKinnon will lead Minnesota's backfield in touches, but it's indicative of the faith the Vikings have in short-yardage plodder Asiata. He'll get the goal-line carries. McKinnon is a borderline RB2, Asiata a low-upside RB3.
Sep 25 - 11:44 AM

Matt Asiata had six carries for 14 yards in Sunday night's win over the Packers.

Jerick McKinnon is the favorite to replace Adrian Peterson (knee), but Asiata saw more touches on Sunday night. He could have a role on third downs and in the red-zone. Asiata is low upside add behind McKinnon.
Sep 19 - 12:27 AM

Vikings re-signed RB Matt Asiata to a one-year, $840,000 contract.

Asiata played only 209 snaps last year, but had a big special teams role. He'll return as a short-yardage specialist behind Adrian Peterson and Jerick McKinnon.
Mar 16 - 6:09 PM

The Vikings want to re-sign free agent Matt Asiata.

Asiata was mostly limited to special teams last year, playing 209 snaps. He wouldn’t return as more than a short-yardage/pass-block specialist.
Mar 2 - 6:49 PM

Matt Asiata (quad) was limited in Wednesday’s practice.

Asiata totaled 25 yards on four touches in Sunday's win. Jerick McKinnon will see more snaps behind Adrian Peterson if Asiata doesn't play this week.

Matt Asiata rushed three times for two yards in Saturday's preseason game.

He added two catches for an additional 13 yards. Provided he sits out Thursday's finale, the fantasy folk hero finishes the summer with 15 carries for 60 yards. He caught eight passes for 57 additional yards. Asiata is a firm third on the depth chart behind Adrian Peterson and Jerick McKinnon.

Vikings re-signed RB Matt Asiata to a one-year contract.

Asiata was set to become a restricted free agent but had no chance of earning the $1.54 million tender. Instead, he's coming back on an "incentive-laced" one-year deal. He'll compete for the No. 3 job if Adrian Peterson is back in the fold.

The Vikings are working on a new deal with restricted free agent Matt Asiata.

It makes sense, given Adrian Peterson's uncertain future in Minnesota. He's not a burner, but Asiata has the frame to be a useful short yardage back. Asiata led the team with nine rushing scores in 2014, easily a career-high. He'll carry vulture potential in 2015 if Peterson isn't back with the Vikes.

Matt Asiata rushed for 91 yards on 19 carries and caught two balls for 17 yards in the Vikings' Week 17 win over the Bears.

A fullbackish grinder, Asiata wound up spending most of the 2014 season as Minnesota's feature back due to Adrian Peterson's suspension and Jerick McKinnon's injury. Asiata finished with 164 carries for 570 yards (3.48 YPC) and ten all-purpose touchdowns, to go with 44 receptions. Asiata can pass protect and gets what's blocked, and for those reasons he may have a long NFL career. But he isn't a starting-caliber running back. The 27-year-old will be a restricted free agent in March. We suspect the Vikings will tender Asiata at the lowest possible level, or not tender him at all.

Matt Asiata rushed 16 times for 58 yards and two touchdowns and caught three balls for 19 yards in the Vikings' Week 16 loss to the Dolphins.

Asiata gave Minnesota a quick first-quarter lead on a one-yard touchdown run. Miami has struggled mightily in run defense for the past month-plus and Minnesota looked to take advantage, utilizing FB Jerome Felton ahead of Asiata in I and offset-I formations. Asiata also converted a two-point conversion late in the fourth quarter, and the game-winning touchdown just plays later following a Jarvis Landry lost fumble deep in Dolphins territory. Asiata paid Week 16 fantasy dividends, but continues to be an entirely TD-dependent fantasy commodity. The Vikings will close out their season against the Bears in Week 17.
Sun, Dec 21, 2014 04:55:00 PM

Matt Asiata (foot) is listed as probable for Week 16.

Asiata will continue to lead the Vikings' backfield against Miami. He should see 15-20 touches against a Dolphins run defense that's allowing an average of 192 yards over the last four games. Asiata is a top-25 running back play for Week 16.
