Matt Asiata rushed 16 times for 58 yards and two touchdowns and caught three balls for 19 yards in the Vikings' Week 16 loss to the Dolphins.
Asiata gave Minnesota a quick first-quarter lead on a one-yard touchdown run. Miami has struggled mightily in run defense for the past month-plus and Minnesota looked to take advantage, utilizing FB Jerome Felton ahead of Asiata in I and offset-I formations. Asiata also converted a two-point conversion late in the fourth quarter, and the game-winning touchdown just plays later following a Jarvis Landry lost fumble deep in Dolphins territory. Asiata paid Week 16 fantasy dividends, but continues to be an entirely TD-dependent fantasy commodity. The Vikings will close out their season against the Bears in Week 17. Dec 21 - 4:55 PM

Date:

Matt Asiata (foot) is listed as probable for Week 16.

Asiata will continue to lead the Vikings' backfield against Miami. He should see 15-20 touches against a Dolphins run defense that's allowing an average of 192 yards over the last four games. Asiata is a top-25 running back play for Week 16.
Dec 19 - 5:44 PM

Matt Asiata (foot) remained limited on Thursday.

Asiata is fully expected to lead the Vikings' backfield against Miami. He'll be a borderline RB2 for the fantasy finals, one who will hurt owners if he doesn't find the end zone.
Dec 18 - 3:59 PM

Matt Asiata (foot) was limited on Wednesday.

Asiata played the majority of snaps in Sunday's loss. There's been no indication his foot injury will keep him out this week. Asiata is a touchdown-dependent FLEX option against Miami.
Dec 17 - 5:21 PM

Matt Asiata out-snapped Ben Tate 45-13 in Sunday's loss to the Lions.

Joe Banyard was third on the totem pole with 11 snaps. It reiterates what we already knew -- this coaching staff loves them some Asiata. Over the last three games, he's averaging 14.6 carries, 4.6 catches and has scored one touchdown. We know the volume will be there against the Dolphins Sunday, making Asiata a flex option versus a sagging Miami run defense.

Dec 16 - 10:10 AM

Matt Asiata rushed 11 times for 36 yards and a touchdown and caught seven balls for 50 yards in the Vikings' Week 15 loss to the Lions.

Continuing to operate as Minnesota's feature back, Asiata got the Vikings on the board with a first-quarter two-yard touchdown run. The Vikings trust Asiata more than Ben Tate and Joe Banyard, particularly in pass protection. So that means Asiata will continue to get lead back work despite his ineffectiveness on the field. Sort of like a younger version of Steven Jackson at this stage of S-Jax's career, Asiata will be a touchdown-dependent flex option in Week 16 against the Dolphins.
Dec 14 - 7:34 PM

Speaking Monday, Vikings coach Mike Zimmer said Matt Asiata was given too many carries in Sunday's overtime win over the Jets.

Asiata out-touched Ben Tate and Joe Banyard 22-5. He averaged only 2.8 yards per carry, and managed all of 10 yards on three catches. Asiata has established beyond a reasonable doubt that he's a sub-replacement level player at running back. He won't be on the RB3 radar against the Lions' ferocious run defense in Week 15.
Dec 8 - 3:15 PM

Matt Asiata rushed for 59 yards on 19 carries in the Vikings' Week 14 win over the Jets.

Asiata was an every-down back, with Ben Tate and Joe Banyard combining for just five touches. He was shut down by the Jets' run defense, averaging 2.8 YPC. With Jerick McKinnon on I.R. and Adrian Peterson's status with the Vikings up in the air, Asiata should remain the primary back going forward. Asiata won't be more than a low-end RB3 for Week 15 against the Lions.
Dec 7 - 5:00 PM

Coach Mike Zimmer said Friday the Vikings plan to use a "hot-hand" approach at running back versus the Jets.

Jerick McKinnon (back) isn't going to play against New York's top-three run defense, leaving Matt Asiata, Joe Banyard, and Ben Tate to vie for carries. "I would assume we will use all three running backs," were Zimmer's exact words. Asiata served as the Vikings' feature back in Week 13, but was his typically unproductive self. Ideally, fantasy owners would avoid this situation.
Dec 5 - 1:41 PM

Matt Asiata rushed for 52 yards on 14 carries in the Vikings' Week 13 win over the Panthers.

He added four catches for a measly five yards. Asiata is completely devoid of playmaking ability, but got the start in the backfield with Jerick McKinnon (back) inactive. Ben Tate received five carries, and Joe Banyard got two. The Vikings imply trust Asiata the most despite his lack of athleticism. Asiata will be a weak RB3 in Week 14 against the Jets if McKinnon is forced to sit again.
Nov 30 - 4:42 PM

Matt Asiata (concussion) is active for Week 13 and expected to draw the start against the Panthers.

With Jerick McKinnon (back) sidelined, Asiata will fall back into the starting role for Minnesota, though that does not ensure he will see the majority of the running back touches. Joe Banyard played well in a limited role last week and could be in line for more work and Ben Tate could also get in the mix. Despite the great matchup against Carolina, Asiata is only a RB3 desperation play Week 13.
Nov 30 - 11:49 AM

Matt Asiata (concussion) is listed as probable for Week 13.

Asiata, Joe Banyard, and perhaps Ben Tate will form a committee rushing attack Sunday against the Panthers. Based on how poorly Tate played in Cleveland and Asiata's plodding tendencies, Banyard may be Minnesota's best running back option at this point. Jerick McKinnon won't play due to a back injury.
Nov 28 - 3:09 PM

Matt Asiata (concussion) was cleared to practice Wednesday.

Asiata declared himself "ready to go" for Sunday's game against the Panthers. He should resume third-down and short-yardage work behind Jerick McKinnon, putting him on the RB4 radar.
Nov 26 - 2:34 PM

Matt Asiata (concussion) remained sidelined at Friday's practice and has been ruled out for Week 12.

Jerick McKinnon will be the lead back with newcomer Ben Tate and/or Joe Banyard possibly pitching in on short-yardage work.
Nov 21 - 12:23 PM

Vikings OC Norv Turner considers Matt Asiata (concussion) "in doubt" for Week 12.

Per Norval, it's the primary reason the Vikings claimed Ben Tate off waivers on Wednesday. Asiata remained sidelined on Thursday. With Jerick McKinnon still operating as the lead back, Tate will be a touchdown-dependent RB4 if Asiata indeed sits against the Packers.
