Former Broncos and Eagles S Brian Dawkins announced his retirement.
Dawkins says he's 100 percent recovered from last year's neck injury, but his odds of returning for a fourth season in Denver took a hit after the Broncos signed FS Mike Adams. Dawkins remained an effective player last season, but was increasingly limited by injuries, missing a combined seven games. A nine-time Pro Bowler, he was named a first-team All Pro four times, and was a second-team All Pro as recently as 2009. He spent his first 12 seasons in Philadelphia, and will retire as an Eagle after 37 interceptions, 26 sacks and 1,169 tackles compiled across 224 career games. A media favorite, Dawkins is likely Canton bound. Mon, Apr 23, 2012 10:03:00 AM

Free agent SS Brian Dawkins says his neck injury is 100 percent recovered, and the numbness is gone from his fingers.

Dawkins describes his late-season injury as a pinched nerve that simply needed recovery time. The 38-year-old remains undecided about playing in 2012. After Mike Adams signed in Denver, Dawkins may not be welcomed back.

Free agent SS Brian Dawkins is expected to either retire or re-sign with the Broncos.

If Dawkins (neck) receives medical clearance to play, he is not expected to peddle his wares on the open market. The odds are high Dawkins has played his final down.

The Denver Post confirms that SS Brian Dawkins' contract has expired and he is a free agent.

The NFLPA database previously listed Dawkins as being under contract for $6 million in 2012, but was recently updated and does not have him signed at all. Dawkins suffered a career-threatening neck injury late in the 2011 season. Now 38 years old, we suspect Dawkins has played his last snap in the NFL.

The NFLPA database does not list Broncos SS Brian Dawkins as being under contract for 2012.

Dawkins' old contract listed him with a 2012 base salary of $6 million, but he appears to be an unrestricted free agent after the Broncos did some kind of tinkering with the deal, either last offseason or during the year. Dawkins has a career-threatening neck injury and may be forced into retirement anyway.

Broncos SS Brian Dawkins is still experiencing numbness and weakness associated with his late-season neck injury.

Dawkins won't make a decision on his football career until after the Super Bowl. The 38-year-old suggested that the only way he would play another season is if the Broncos want him back.

Despite missing the playoffs with a neck injury, Broncos SS Brian Dawkins plans to play in Sunday's Pro Bowl.

Contact is extremely limited in the meaningless exhibition game, so Dawkins doesn't have to be fearful of an aggravation. It is, however, an indication that Dawkins has been medically cleared for the offseason. Due a $6 million salary entering his age-39 campaign, it may be Dawkins' last opportunity to don a Broncos helmet. Or any other team's, for that matter.

It would be "surprising" if Brian Dawkins (neck) didn't retire this offseason, according to the Denver Post.

Dawkins had a bounce-back year at age 38, but struggled with a neck injury for the final six weeks of the season. He missed both playoff games. Still, Dawkins won't be in a rush to make a decision. His contract runs through 2013.

NFL Network's Jeff Darlington reports that Broncos SS Brian Dawkins' neck injury is "career threatening."

"I continue to hear from my sources that this injury is career threatening and there is very little expectation that he will be able to return if the Broncos do indeed advance," Darlington reported on Around the League Friday. Dawkins may be headed for injured reserve shortly. David Bruton and rookie Quinton Carter will be the Broncos' safeties throughout the playoffs.

Broncos SS Brian Dawkins (neck) has been ruled out for Week 18.

Dawkins never had a realistic shot to play in the Wild Card round, and there still is no timetable for him to return. The Broncos will start special teamer David Bruton at free safety and rookie Quinton Carter at strong safety Sunday.

Broncos SS Brian Dawkins (neck) was held out of practice Wednesday.

Dawkins has been without a timetable for a return since re-injuring his neck on Christmas Eve, and hasn't done anything to suggest he'll be ready for Sunday's Wild Card showdown with Pittsburgh. His absence would be huge against a Steelers team that figures to go even more pass heavy than usual without Rashard Mendenhall in the lineup. David Bruton will start if Dawkins can't go.

Broncos SS Brian Dawkins (neck) is inactive for Week 17 against the Chiefs.

Dawkins' latest neck injury has led to whispers that his career could be in danger, so he's far from a guarantee to return for the postseason if the Broncos win the AFC West. David Bruton will start in his absence. Also inactive for the Broncos are RB Austin Sylvester, LB Mike Mohamed, G Manny Ramirez, G Tony Hills, TE Julius Thomas and DE Derrick Harvey.

There are concerns that Brian Dawkins' neck injury could end his career, according to the Denver Post.

Dawkins has missed parts, or all, of four games this season due to this neck issue. He says he'll be fine, but the 38-year-old ex-Eagle is known as one of the game's toughest players. Doctors will likely have the final say here.

Broncos SS Brian Dawkins is done for the day with a neck injury.

Dawkins also missed Week 15 with a neck injury, so this likely is an aggravation. The Broncos have turned to David Bruton at the strong safety spot.

Broncos SS Brian Dawkins (neck) is inactive for Week 15 against the Patriots.

Dawkins was originally thought to be on track to play, but will instead sit out after suffering his second neck injury of the season in Week 14. Rookie SS Quinton Carter will shift to strong safety, leaving fellow rookie Rahim Moore to man free safety. It's bad news for a team facing Tom Brady. Also inactive for the Broncos are S David Bruton, LB Mike Mohamed, G Manuel Ramirez, G Tony Hills, TE Julius Thomas and DE Derrick Harvey.
