Brian Westbrook told the Associated Press that he is experiencing memory loss he believes was caused by concussions suffered on the field.
Westbrook, 33, said he can’t remember names, recall facts, or retain new information. Westbrook missed two games after being knocked unconscious on the field against the Redskins in 2009, then suffered another concussion in his first game back. Westbrook now says he shouldn’t have been cleared to play so quickly. Sat, Mar 16, 2013 11:51:00 AM

Free agent Brian Westbrook has decided to retire.

He'll do so as an Eagle on Wednesday. Westbrook was serviceable for the 49ers in 2010, rushing 77 times for 340 yards (4.4 YPC) while reeling in 16 passes for 150 yards, but drew little interest on the open market last season. Still a week shy of his 33rd birthday, he'll retire with 10,275 yards from scrimmage and 71 touchdowns.

Free agent Brian Westbrook left Miami without signing a contract.

As expected. Westbrook said the workout went really well, but "they need some other players right now." Miami is content to misuse Reggie Bush as a feature back, supporting him with a washed up Larry Johnson and a rookie that's fallen out of favor in Daniel Thomas.

The Dolphins are expected to work out free agent running backs Brian Westbrook, Thomas Clayton and an unknown player on Tuesday.

At this point in his career, Westbrook is a poor man's Reggie Bush, so he doesn't make a ton of sense. Clayton is a journeyman that hasn't been able to stick on a roster in his four-year career. Even if Daniel Thomas is hurt for an extended period of time, neither player is the answer. The Fins are probably just updating their free-agent list.

Brian Westbrook was "miserable" in San Francisco last season, according to beat writer Matt Maiocco.

Westbrook was a bench warmer until late November, so it's hardly a surprise that he wasn't thrilled with his role. It sounds like he wasn't a big fan of the Bay Area, either. If the 31-year-old lands a contract this summer, it will likely be with a team in the eastern time zone.

The Cleveland Plain Dealer suggests free agent RB Brian Westbrook could be a fit with the Browns.

Westbrook is done in San Francisco after they drafted Kendall Hunter. While Westbrook certainly knows Browns GM Tom Heckert from their days together in Philadelphia, there's reason to believe Westbrook is done as an effective player. He'll be 32 in September and is a poor bet to maintain health.

The Sacramento Bee confirms that free agent Brian Westbrook "appears unlikely" to return to the 49ers.

The Bee mentions Oregon State's Jacquizz Rodgers and Oklahoma State's Kendall Hunter as options to replace Westbrook as a change-up back behind Frank Gore. "Quizz" might be an especially good fit. 49ers TEs coach Reggie Davis spent the last three years as Rodgers' position coach, and he totaled a ridiculous 271 all-purpose yards with four TDs in a 2009 Pac 10 meeting with Jim Harbaugh, who was Stanford's head coach at the time.

Free agent Brian Westbrook said he would "love" to return to the Eagles.

Westbrook harbors no ill will even though the Eagles released him in a cost-cutting move last March. And as one of the most beloved players in franchise history, it's possible the Birds will be open to a return. But at age 32, Westbrook wouldn't come close to threatening LeSean McCoy for reps on any down. The Villanova product would just be a locker room leader and insurance.

Coach Jim Harbaugh neglected to mention free agent Brian Westbrook when he outlined the 49ers' backfield situation going forward.

"I think (Anthony) Dixon did a tremendous job last year," said Harbaugh. "I think his productivity and growth as a football player is going to be even elevated this year." With Frank Gore and Dixon as the top two backs, Westbrook doesn't have a role in San Francisco. He'll play elsewhere in 2011.

Free agent Brian Westbrook is considered "doubtful" to return to the 49ers for the 2011 season.

CSN Bay Area's Matt Maiocco expects Anthony Dixon to "take on more responsibility" as Frank Gore's complement. Westbrook didn't play much until Gore got injured in 2010, but also didn't embarrass himself with a 4.42 yards per carry average and five touchdowns. He'll remain a major injury risk going on 32 with a brittle lower body, but can still help on passing downs.

Impending free agent Brian Westbrook plans to continue his playing career in 2011.

He also made it clear that he doesn't want to ride the pine as he did for all but six games in 2010. Westbrook recently spoke to GM Trent Baalke, who told him his playing time would be left up to a new coaching staff. Evidenced by 41 catches and a 4.45 yards per carry average over the last two seasons, Westbrook still has plenty to offer as a passing-down back.

Brian Westbrook rushed 13 times for 79 yards and two touchdowns while adding one reception for 14 yards to lead the 49ers to a 38-7 blowout victory over the Cardinals in Week 17.

Westbrook shook off a vicious clothesline hit by Adrian Wilson to notch a pair of six-yard scores, the first of which saw him crawl five yards untouched into the end zone. Proving that he can still contribute as an effective insurance policy, Westbrook posted 77 carries for 340 yards with 16 receptions for 150 yards and five total scores in essentially five games. The 31-year-old is a free agent this offseason, and he should have an easier time finding a job after avoiding injuries in 2010.

Brian Westbrook was shaken up late in the second quarter Sunday after taking a vicious clothesline hit from Cardinals S Adrian Wilson.

Wilson hit Westbrook in the neck and slammed him violently to the ground. Westbrook was down for a minute before walking off under his own power. It's possible that he just had the wind knocked out. Westbrook started the third quarter, so it's great news that he avoided another concussion.

Brian Westbrook rushed 10 times for 40 yards and added two catches for three yards in Sunday's loss to the Rams.

Anthony Dixon was able to play through his ankle injury for six carries, so Westbrook's reps were limited. He showed decent explosion through holes, but hasn't topped 40 yards since Week 12's fluky 136-yard day. Westbrook has a dream matchup against the Cardinals next week, but will share the load with Dixon. The Niners have been eliminated from the playoffs.

49ers RB Brian Westbrook is listed as probable with "soreness" for Week 16.

He's missed practice this week to get extra rest but should ready to start against the Rams barring a setback between now and Sunday. He's currently our No. 27 ranked running back play, though he stands to get a nice bump in value if Anthony Dixon (questionable, ankle) can't go.
