Eagles agreed to terms with DE Derrick Burgess, formerly of the Patriots.

Burgess will take rookie Brandon Graham's (ACL tear) roster spot as a situational pass rusher. The 32-year-old was released by the Pats in early September after waffling on a return in August. He's useless against the run and will need time to get up to speed as a pass rusher. At the very least, Burgess adds experience for a playoff run.

Patriots released OLB Derrick Burgess.

Burgess showed up to camp a couple weeks late for no real reason and then flashed his declining skill set. That's a sure way to get dumped in New England. Burgess can no longer do anything against the run and at age 32, his pass-rushing skills aren't that great either. Perhaps the Patriots are angling to bring back Jarvis Green, who was cut by the Broncos today.

Patriots OLB Derrick Burgess was washed out in the running game during Thursday's preseason finale against the Giants.

The Giants "consistently" succeeded running to the 32-year-old's side, and he "badly lost contain" on a 15-yard end-around by Hakeem Nicks. Burgess also brought no pressure. With Leigh Bodden and Ty Warren out for the year and little pass rush coming off the edge, the Pats' defense is in dire straights.

Derrick Burgess started at outside linebacker in Thursday's exhibition game with Tully Banta-Cain out.

Burgess didn't show up at training camp until last Friday and was with the first-teamers just six days later. He's obviously not in coach Bill Belichick's doghouse.

The Patriots announced Friday that they have reinstated DE/OLB Derrick Burgess to the active roster.

Burgess opened camp on the reserve/did not report list, but he's ready to play after taking off the first few weeks. He'll compete for playing time with Rob Ninkovich, Tully Banta-Cain, and rookie Jermaine Cunningham.

Coach Bill Belichick expressed frustration with DE/OLB Derrick Burgess' unexpected absence from training camp.

"Derrick wasn't here yesterday and we expect him to be here," Belichick said. "I'm not sure exactly that I know all the information that I need to know ... We'll just take that day by day." Burgess is an important piece to a defensive puzzle with major questions at pass rusher. The Pats can still activate him if/when he decides to come back.

Patriots placed DE/OLB Derrick Burgess on the reserve/did not report list.

It's the same list Bills OLB Aaron Schobel was placed on earlier Thursday in similar circumstances. Burgess is contemplating retirement. If he gets the itch again, the Pats can activate him at any time.

Updating a previous item, Patriots DE/OLB Derrick Burgess is absent from training camp because he's reportedly contemplating retirement.

The 31-year-old also missed the start of Raiders camp last season. He's not the first grizzled veteran to decide that his heart is not in it in late July. Burgess is said to be leaning toward retirement, but he's not ruling out a change of heart. We can't imagine Bill Belichick looking to kindly on his absence.

Patriots DE/OLB Derrick Burgess was a no-show for the start of training camp Thursday.

Coach Bill Belichick was quoted as saying all players under contract were in attendance, but there's been no sign of Burgess. The pass rusher hasn't returned texts or phone messages from CSNNE.com's Tom Curran, and it's not clear if the team knows his whereabouts.

Patriots agreed to terms with DE/OLB Derrick Burgess on a one-year, $1.5 million contract, including a $100,000 signing bonus.

After languishing on the open market for three months, Burgess also receives a first-year roster bonus of $50,000 with another $100,000 available in incentives. Despite all of their offseason moves, the Patriots still have major questions about their pass rush. After disappointing early in the season, Burgess had three sacks in the last four games of 2009. The timing of his re-signing indicates that the club was not overly impressed with second-round pick Jermaine Cunningham at rookie camp.

Free agent DE/OLB Derrick Burgess has heard nothing from the Packers despite some rumors.

The Packers are a little thin at outside linebacker, but for some reason the entire league league is passing on Burgess right now. He's entering his age-32 season and had three sacks in his final four games last season.

The Patriots are expected to make a final decision on free agent DE/OLB Derrick Burgess within a week.

The sides are still negotiating, and coach Bill Belichick says he's still interested in bringing back the pass rusher. Burgess is not expected to be signed for much more than $1 million per year on a short-term contract.

Free agent DE/OLB Derrick Burgess said Tuesday that he would "love to move forward" as a member of the Patriots.

Burgess took awhile to convert from 4-3 end to 3-4 outside linebacker, but finished the year with an impact, racking up three sacks in the last four games. There will be a sizable market for the 31-year-old's services in March.

Coach Bill Belichick insists that DE/OLB Derrick Burgess has met expectations this year after being acquired from the Raiders.

The Pats' pass rush has been underwhelming all year, but Belichick claims Burgess is "probably as good as we’ve had as a run player and a pass rusher." We don't see it, and neither do several of Burgess' teammates who questioned Belichick's analysis. Burgess has just 37 tackles and five sacks this season.
