Shaun Draughn rushed seven times for 18 yards and one touchdown and caught 2-of-2 targets for 18 yards in the 49ers' Week 1 win over the Rams.
Carlos Hyde was the 49ers' clear lead back, playing 58-of-82 snaps and handling all of the early-down work, but as expected, Draughn was in on passing downs, seeing 20 snaps. His touchdown came on a sweep to the left as Draughn stiff-armed SS T.J. McDonald on his way to pay dirt. Draughn will be more effective in the box score when the 49ers play from behind. That will likely be the case next Sunday on a short week ahead of Week 2 at the Panthers. He has some RB3 appeal in PPR leagues. Sep 13 - 2:06 AM

49ers coach Chip Kelly says Shaun Draughn is the team's No. 2 running back.

Draughn was already the favorite, but it's a nice vote of confidence that his coach is already confirming he won't be unseated by Mike Davis or DuJuan Harris this summer. Davis is coming off a brutal exhibition effort against the Broncos. Draughn will open the year with a role on third down, and is an intriguing handcuff behind Carlos Hyde, who isn't a picture of durability.

Shaun Draughn missed the 49ers' second preseason game with a rib injury.

Draughn got hurt in the 49ers' joint practices with the Broncos. "Got hit in the ribs in practice with Denver," said coach Chip Kelly. "So, we expect him to be back this week." As Mike Davis and DuJuan Harris combined for three lost fumbles Saturday night, Draughn remains the frontrunner for No. 2 back duties.
Aug 21 - 7:50 PM

Shaun Draughn rushed twice for 12 yards and caught two balls for nine yards in the 49ers' preseason opener Sunday night.

Carlos Hyde was of course the 49ers' primary back, but Draughn also saw action with the first-team offense. He got buried in the backfield on his first carry for a loss of three, but broke several tackles on his next attempt for a 15-yard gain. Assuming Draughn can hold off Mike Davis -- who looked terrific tonight -- Draughn should open the season with a significant role, particularly in the passing game. Draughn is a late-round PPR flyer worth taking.
Aug 14 - 8:55 PM

49ers OC Curtis Modkins compared Shaun Draughn to Theo Riddick.

Modkins was the Lions' RBs coach last season before joining coach Chip Kelly in San Francisco. It's become quite clear that Draughn is locked into No. 2 duties and pass-game work behind early-down workhorse Carlos Hyde. Riddick finished last season as RB18 in PPR leagues, posting an 80-697-3 receiving line.

According to the Santa Rosa Press Democrat, Shaun Draughn and Bruce Ellington have been Blaine Gabbert's "go-to receivers" on third down in training camp.

Slot man Ellington and passing-down back Draughn run routes in areas of the field where Gabbert is most comfortable throwing the ball. Draughn averaged over four catches per game when he started last year and is beginning to look like a big factor in San Francisco's passing game. Carlos Hyde has never been a high-volume receiving back. Ellington looks locked into three-receiver sets.
Aug 11 - 3:51 PM

ESPN 49ers reporter Michael Wagaman foresees "plenty of playing time" for Shaun Draughn in San Francisco's passing-back role.

Although there has been a push for Carlos Hyde to become more of a pass catcher in some fantasy circles, he has never played in such a role even dating back to Ohio State. New 49ers coach Chip Kelly was willing to utilize role-specific backs both at Oregon and last year in Philadelphia. Despite getting no buzz, Draughn offers legitimate sleeper potential in PPR leagues. Draughn made six starts last season and averaged 4.2 receptions per game.
Jun 20 - 3:49 PM

Shaun Draughn is seen as the "early favorite" to serve as Carlos Hyde's primary backup this season.

Theoretically, Draughn is a stylistic complement to Hyde as a multi-purpose back with superior passing-game chops. Hyde caught only 34 passes in his three-year college career and has managed 23 receptions through 21 NFL games. On a team that projects to trail often, Draughn may wind up logging more snaps than most expect. Hyde has missed 11 games in two seasons with San Francisco.
Jun 2 - 6:16 PM

49ers re-signed RB Shaun Draughn to a one-year contract.

Draughn had a surprisingly busy 2015 season, starting six games in place of Carlos Hyde. He averaged a mediocre 3.5 yards per carry but played a big role in the passing game with 27 catches for 176 yards. He'll be a change-of-pace option for the Niners in 2016. Draughn should open camp as the favorite for No. 2 running back duties behind Hyde, and ahead of sophomore Mike Davis.
Mar 2 - 3:34 PM

49ers placed Shaun Draughn (knee) on injured reserve, ending his season.

The move was expected after Draughn missed last week. Draughn was an every-down back in place of Carlos Hyde before going down, averaging 3.5 YPC in six starts. The 49ers plan to re-sign him.

Shaun Draughn (knee) has been ruled out for Week 16 at Detroit.

The 49ers will roll with Kendall Gaskins, DuJuan Harris, and FB Bruce Miller to carry the load against the Lions. Gaskins projects as San Francisco's lead runner. Miller vultured a goal-line score in last week's loss to Cincinnati.

Shaun Draughn (knee) remained sidelined Thursday.

It's looking like Draughn will miss Sunday's game against the Lions, leaving the 49ers with a laughably bad committee of Kendall Gaskins and DuJuan Harris. Jarryd Hayne could also be promoted from the practice squad.

Shaun Draughn (knee) did not practice Wednesday.

The 49ers are saying Draughn's injury isn't serious and that he's day-to-day, but we'd like to see him get in a couple limited sessions at least on Thursday and Friday. If he can't go, Kendall Gaskins is likely to handle early-down work for the 49ers against the Lions. DuJuan Harris is also in the mix.

ESPN's Adam Caplan reports 49ers RB Shaun Draughn (knee) is day to day.

CSN Bay Area reported something similar earlier Tuesday. The 49ers swapped out Travaris Cadet for DuJuan Harris on Tuesday, which could be an indication Draughn's status is in doubt. Harris is more of an early-down runner than Cadet.

CSN Bay Area reports Shaun Draughn's knee injury isn't considered serious.

However, Matt Maiocco reports the team might still make a signing at running back. For now, Draughn should be considered day to day, and no better than 50-50 to suit up against the Lions. Owners need to have a back-up plan at their RB2 spot.
