Beat writer Jamison Hensley doesn't expect unrestricted free agent L.J. Smith back with the Ravens next season.
Smith's one-year stint in Baltimore was unsurprisingly marred by injuries and ineffectiveness on his way to two catches all season. He's not the heir apparent to Todd Heap and is unlikely to latch on anywhere as a starter. Sun, Jan 24, 2010 09:25:00 AM

L.J. Smith (ankle) is listed as doubtful for Monday Night Football.

Smith has only two catches for 31 yards on the season. His absence does not make Todd Heap a better fantasy play. Green Bay is the toughest team in the league against tight ends and Heap is coming off a six-yard game.

L.J. Smith has caught just one pass since his season debut two weeks ago.

Offensive coordinator Cam Cameron attributed Smith's lack of playing time to Todd Heap's "outstanding" early-season play. "Todd is just playing lights out and continuing to get better," explained Cameron.

Ravens TE L.J. Smith said he is over his hamstring woes, but he may still be inactive on Sunday.

Smith is rusty, doesn't play special teams, and isn't an asset with Todd Heap's pass catching coming on. Smith may not make an impact all year.

L.J. Smith (hamstring) returned to a full practice on Thursday.

Smith is on track to finally debut as Todd Heap's backup Sunday.

Ravens declared TE L.J. Smith, QB John Beck, S Tom Zbikowski, LB Dannell Ellerbe, OT Oniel Cousins, OL Tony Moll, DT Brandon McKinney and LB Paul Kruger inactive for Sunday's game against the Chargers.

Smith (hamstring) was a game-time decision and predictably he can't go. He just can't be counted on. That said, the Ravens have a serious health edge on the Chargers heading into this one.

Ravens coach John Harbaugh confirmed that L.J. Smith (questionable, hamstring) will be a game-time decision in Week 2.

Smith is basically a game-time decision every week because he's always banged up. Don't expect him to cut heavily into Todd Heap's snaps Sunday.

L.J. Smith (hamstring) practiced for the second straight day Thursday.

Smith will probably still be a game-time decision. He's been out since the third exhibition game. Even when he's healthy, which isn't very often, Smith won't be much of a fantasy play.

L.J. Smith (hamstring) returned to a limited practice Wednesday.

Smith, out since Baltimore's third exhibition game, has an outside shot to play in Week 2. Todd Heap would be a much better fantasy start, though.

Coach John Harbaugh says TE L.J. Smith (hamstring) has a chance to play in Week 2 in San Diego.

"There's a chance. We'll be hopeful, but you can't say for sure," said Harbaugh. Smith was signed to be insurance if Todd Heap couldn't bounce back from his bad 2008 season, but Heap proved Sunday that he can still get open. Smith will be the team's No. 2 tight end when he returns.

Ravens TE L.J. Smith (hamstring) is listed as doubtful for Sunday's game against the Chiefs.

Smith will be a game-time decision, but it's unlikely he'll go. He's never been able to stay healthy throughout his career, and he shouldn't be on any fantasy rosters.

Ravens TE L.J. Smith (hamstring) is not expected to play in Week 1.

Smith remains out indefinitely with his preseason injury. He is aiming to play in Week 2, but may have a minimal role behind Todd Heap upon return.

L.J. Smith may miss the rest of the preseason with a pulled hamstring.

Smith, who got hurt in Monday night's exhibition, walked off under his own power, but mild injuries are more significant for him than most. "It's a concern," coach John Harbaugh admitted. "I don't know how long (he's out)."

L.J. Smith suffered a minor hamstring injury during Monday night's game.

It's a concern because Smith also had a hamstring injury early in camp. He simply can't stay on the field. Look elsewhere for a deep sleeper at TE2.

L.J. Smith (hamstring) has resumed practicing at Ravens training camp.

Smith got hurt on the first day of camp and only missed a week, but it's just a matter of time before the injury-prone tight end goes back on the shelf.
