The Chargers haven't ruled out OLB Melvin Ingram (torn ACL) returning in 2013.
It's a nice thought, but Ingram is an extreme long-shot to suit up this season. Perhaps he'll be placed on injured reserve/designated for return if the Chargers avoid injuries to other key players in training camp, but that would be a best-case scenario. There's no point in rushing Ingram's recovery so he could play limited snaps in what will likely be meaningless late-season games. May 21 - 4:05 PM

Date:

Chargers OLB Melvin Ingram (torn ACL) will undergo surgery next week, and is expected to miss the entire 2013 season.

Dr. James Andrews will perform the operation. Even if Ingram made an Adrian Peterson-style recovery, there's almost no way he'd have a realistic chance of contributing this year. Disappointing 2009 first-rounder Larry English is a candidate to take Ingram's place in the starting lineup, but not as the edge rusher San Diego desperately needs. Free agent Dwight Freeney will visit Wednesday.

Chargers OLB Melvin Ingram suffered a torn left ACL in OTAs Tuesday.

He's almost certainly out for the season. It's a crushing blow for a Chargers' pass rush that was already perilously thin, and major setback for a player coming off a mediocre rookie campaign. The No. 18 pick of last year's draft, Ingram should be stashed on injured reserve some time in August. The only silver lining is that he'll have well over an entire calendar year to get back to 100 percent. As for the Bolts' pass rush, new GM Tom Telesco will likely at least consider making a run at free agent Dwight Freeney. Telesco was the Colts' VP of football operations before heading to Southern California. John Abraham and Israel Idonije are two other possibilities. The rush linebacker market is comically thin.

NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports the Chargers "fear" second-year OLB Melvin Ingram has suffered a torn ACL.

The Union-Tribue San Diego reports Ingram will receive a "couple more opinions" before the Chargers decide what to do. A torn ACL would be a big blow for the rebuilding Bolts, who are "hopeful" the 2012 first-rounder can take a big step forward this season after they let Antwan Barnes and Shaun Phillips walk in free agency. Ingram played just 475 snaps as a rookie, notching one sack and 41 tackles. The Chargers' pass-rush is about to go from an area of need to an area of crisis.

The Chargers are "hopeful" second-year OLB Melvin Ingram will take a step forward this season.

Ingram played 475 snaps as a rookie, recording just one sack and 41 tackles. With Antwan Barnes gone to New York and Shaun Phillips unsigned, the time is now for Ingram to live up to his first-round draft slot. He had 19 sacks and 26 tackles for a loss over his final two seasons at South Carolina.

Chargers rookie OLB Melvin Ingram suffered a "deep thigh bruise" in Friday's preseason game, but will be fine for Week 1.

X-rays came back negative for the No. 18 pick, who will finish the preseason with six tackles and two sacks. Ingram remains a rookie to monitor in IDP leagues.

According to the Union-Tribune San Diego, first-round pick OLB Melvin Ingram has "stood out with his athleticism, physicality and still-raw instincts."

"I think he's going to be really special," coach Norv Turner said. "He's got a very physical presence. You look at those outside linebackers that have had great success in this league, and they have a physical presence." Ingram will see most of his rookie snaps at outside linebacker, but is expected to rush the passer from other areas, as well. He's worth keeping an eye on in IDP leagues.

Rookie Melvin Ingram rotated with Jarret Johnson at strong-side outside linebacker during minicamps.

The Chargers view the position as Ingram's natural spot. He'll likely sub in for Johnson on passing downs and also is capable of rushing the passer from other areas. "He's a rookie. He's got a million miles to travel," said LBs coach Joe Barry. "But (expletive), he's making progress, and that's all I can ask for."

"San Diego sources" tell the National Football Post the Chargers plan to have No. 18 pick Melvin Ingram rush the passer from a "number of places."

Ingram is expected to see the majority of his snaps at outside linebacker, but the Chargers are reportedly planning to "move him around like South Carolina did." Ingram routinely lined up at defensive tackle on third downs in college. If Ingram isn't one of this season's top rookie pass rushers, it won't be because the Bolts didn't put him in position to succeed.

First-round pick Melvin Ingram worked at strong-side outside linebacker during the Chargers' rookie minicamp.

Travis LaBoy was San Diego's "SAM" backer a year ago, and Ingram projects as a huge upgrade after the incumbent tallied just one sack. Jarret Johnson will likely be the strong-side starter, with Ingram replacing him on obvious passing downs. Antwan Barnes is another high-motor option for the nickel defense.

Chargers agreed to terms with No. 18 overall pick OLB Melvin Ingram on a four-year contract.

GM A.J. Smith identified an inability to get to the quarterback as the team's glaring defensive weakness in 2011. Labeled by coach Norv Turner as "the most complete, versatile linebacker in the draft," Ingram should make an instant impact as perhaps the team's most dangerous pass rusher. Believing there was "no way" Ingram would fall to No. 18, Smith was "ecstatic" when the South Carolina star was still on the board.

Chargers GM A.J. Smith isn't worried about No. 18 pick OLB Melvin Ingram's short arms.

Some evaluators believe Ingram's 31.5-inch arms will give him trouble against longer offensive tackles, but Smith doesn't think it will be an issue. "I think Melvin will have the same problem Tyrannosaurus Rex had millions of years ago," Smith deadpanned. Perhaps the draft's top pass-rusher, Ingram will be counted on to fortify a Bolts pass rush that notched only 32 sacks in 2011.

The Chargers reportedly rejected multiple offers to trade out of No. 18 in order to draft OLB Melvin Ingram.

"I consider this a part of luck," GM A.J. Smith crowed, "because when I see what I consider a bonus pick, outside our cluster, it's luck. He's a mean, nasty man, extremely physical with a great motor." The Chargers believed Ingram was the "most complete" linebacker in the draft, a player who can add backbone to a defense often lacking one in 2011.

Chargers selected South Carolina DE/OLB Melvin Ingram with the No. 18 overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft.

San Diego gets their pass rusher in Ingram, who many doubted would make it past the Jets. Ingram shined in a larger role during his senior season as an edge rusher, but the majority of his production came from the defensive tackle spot on third downs. Blessed with an amazing closing burst, Ingram excels when using his stouter frame to leverage and press the pocket. However, he only has 31.5" arms, which likely turned off a few teams. Ingram is a creative defensive coordinator's dream with the ability to line up and rush the passer from multiple angles.

Sporting News' Russ Lande disputes recent suggestions that South Carolina DE Melvin Ingram's draft stock might be slipping.

Citing "multiple sources," Lande calls those rumors "false." A "consensus" of Lande's sources has Ingram ranked as the draft's top pass rusher, and he's considered both the top-rated defensive end for 4-3 teams, as well as the No. 1-rated 3-4 outside linebacker. Ingram won't get past the Jets at No. 16.
