Speaking Tuesday, Cardinals coach Steve Wilks confirmed the team would be switching to a 4-3 defense for 2018.
Wilks is a disciple of Ron Rivera's 4-3, so it's hardly a surprise, but Wilks suggested earlier this offseason he would be open to keeping Bruce Arians' 3-4. It's not happening, with Wilks citing not wanting Chandler Jones and Markus Golden dropping into coverage so much as the official reason. Whatever front he's rushing out of, it won't affect Jones' sack totals. Apr 10 - 3:14 PM

Cardinals OLB Chandler Jones has dropped his playing weight from 275 to 265.

"I’m excited to move around a little bit more," Jones said. Coach Bruce Arians has noticed a difference in training camp. "I think he is quicker, especially when he’s out in space," Arians claimed. "He didn’t lose any power, that’s for sure." The recipient of a five-year, $82.5 million deal in March, 27-year-old Jones tallied 11 sacks as a first-year Cardinal in 2016.

Cardinals signed OLB Chandler Jones to a five-year, $82.5 million contract with $53 million guaranteed.

This deal makes Jones one of the highest-paid linebackers in football. The Cardinals placed the franchise tag on Jones to buy them more time to negotiate a long-term deal but obviously they didn't need it. Jones has amassed double-digit sacks in three of his last four seasons while emerging as one of the league's top pass-rushers. He's still just 27.

According to MMQB's Albert Breer, Cardinals franchise player OLB Chandler Jones is expected to earn $16.5 million annually on his new contract.

That would make Jones the third-highest-paid 3-4 outside linebacker in the league behind Von Miller and Justin Houston. The 27-year-old has developed into an elite pass rusher, recording 23.5 sacks over the last two seasons. The Cardinals placed the franchise tag on Jones to buy them more time to hash out a long-term agreement. A new deal should come together quickly.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports the Cardinals and franchise player OLB Chandler Jones are finalizing a five-year contract.

The franchise tag was set to pay Jones $14.64 million, so that likely sets a baseline for Jones' annual average. There's a good chance Jones joins Von Miller and Justin Houston as the highest-paid 3-4 outside edge rushers.

Bleacher Report's Jason Cole reports the Cardinals are engaged in long-term talks with unsigned franchise player Chandler Jones.

The Cardinals have been telegraphing this all offseason. They've made clear the franchise tag was just an initial step. The sides have more than four months to hammer out a long-term agreement before the July 15 deadline.

Cardinals assigned the franchise tag to OLB Chandler Jones.

This was about as expected as any move this offseason after president Michael Bidwill, GM Steve Keim, and coach Bruce Arians all said Jones wouldn't be going anywhere as a free agent. Acquired from the Patriots last offseason, Jones was Pro Football Focus' third-ranked 3-4 edge rusher behind Khalil Mack and Von Miller. Jones amassed 66 combined sacks and pressures. The tag for outside linebackers is expected to cost roughly $14.64 million.

Larry Holder of the New Orleans Times-Picayune said he would be "stunned" if the Cardinals didn't franchise-tag impending free agent Chandler Jones.

Holder isn't a Cardinals beat reporter, but his belief that Jones will be tagged seems to be shared league wide. Cardinals GM Steve Keim said he's had "great dialogue" with Jones, but the sides are running out of time to reach a long-term deal before Wednesday's franchise-tag deadline. One of the league's premier pass rushers, Jones is almost certain to be back in Arizona.

Cardinals GM Steve Keim said the team has had "great dialogue" with impending free agent OLB Chandler Jones.

Keim added the team will tag Jones if the two sides cannot reach an agreement by March 1, which is the same thing both president Michael Bidwill and coach Bruce Arians have said this offseason. It is clear Jones will be with the Cardinals for many years to come, but getting his deal done before the tag deadline would give Arizona some flexibility with their other big-name free agents. Both S Tony Jefferson and DE Calais Campbell could be candidates for the tag if Arizona can get something done with Jones.

Cardinals president Michael Bidwill said the team will use the franchise tag on OLB Chandler Jones if the two sides cannot reach a long-term agreement.

"We’re not going to mess around with that," Bidwill said. "He’s a great pass rusher, but if we can’t agree to terms that work for us, we’re just going to franchise him." Bruce Arians said the same thing in early January, and it is clear the Cardinals' position has not changed since then. Tagging Jones will give Arizona extra time to work out a long-term deal with the star pass rusher.

Speaking Monday, Cardinals coach Bruce Arians said the team will franchise tag impending free agent Chandler Jones if a long-term deal is not reached.

Calais Campbell and Tony Jefferson are also headed to the open market, but the Cardinals want to keep 27-year-old (in February) Jones after he tallied 11 sacks his first year in the desert. A long-term deal is the most likely outcome.

FOX Sports Arizona's Mike Jurecki reports the Cardinals would like to work out a long-term deal with impending free agent OLB Chandler Jones, but they could use the franchise tag in the "worst-case" scenario.

Jones has had an exceptional first season in Arizona, recording 9.5 sacks, getting consistent pressure, and standing up pretty well against the run. The Cardinals would not have traded for Jones unless they planned on keeping him around after this season, and it would be a surprise if he is allowed to hit the open market. Jones might not hit the $100-million mark with his next deal, but he should get pretty close.

The Cardinals are discussing a contract extension with OLB Chandler Jones.

Arizona sent New England a second-round pick (and since-released G/C Jonathan Cooper) in exchange for Jones, and isn't going to let him walk after one year in the desert. Jones has been an early-season animal for the Cardinals, piling up five sacks and two forced fumbles through seven starts. He's 26 years old.

Teammates believe Cardinals OLB Chandler Jones can get 20 sacks this season.

"There’s no doubt about it. He has that potential to be a 20-plus sack guy," Patrick Peterson said. "If (Dwight) Freeney had eight sacks in a backup role, Chandler should probably get 20 in a starting role," Tyrann Mathieu added. Considering only 10 players have ever cracked 20 sacks, that might not be a realistic goal for Jones, but it is a sign of how highly he is rated inside the clubhouse. After coming over from the Patriots via trade this offseason, Jones should offer Arizona the true pass-rushing threat they have been missing for several years.

Coach Bruce Arians is confident the Cardinals can extend newly-acquired OLB Chandler Jones' contract.

"When he hits free agency, we’ll have the dollars to make sure he stays," Arians said. The Patriots traded Jones at least in part because of the money it will take to keep him under contract past this season. Only 26 and with 36 career sacks in four seasons, Jones should be looking for something similar to the five-year, $85 million deal Olivier Vernon signed with the Giants.
