Patriots exercised their fifth-year 2016 option on RE/OLB Chandler Jones.
The option is essentially a formality at $7.799 million. Jones is the Patriots' top pass rusher when healthy (23.5 sacks over three NFL seasons) and a key to the entire defense. Apr 30 - 6:33 PM

Patriots RE/OLB Chandler Jones is recovering from an undisclosed surgery.

Jones is currently rehabbing at Gillette Stadium and getting around with the aid of crutches. The Patriots do not publicly disclose injury details, but Jones did miss six games with a hip injury last season. ESPN Boston's Mike Reiss doesn't "get the sense from those close to Jones that there is any significant long-range concern about his health and availability."

Patriots DE/OLB Chandler Jones (hip) is active for Week 15 against the Dolphins.

Brandon LaFell, Shane Vereen and Julian Edelman are all a go for the Pats. Jones ended up missing six games with his hip injury. He'll likely be on a snap count this afternoon, but will be back to 100 percent for the postseason. He's the Pats' best pass rusher when healthy. Inactive for the Pats are CB Alfonzo Dennard, OT Jordan Devey, OT Cameron Fleming, RB James White, LB Chris White, DL Dominique Easley and DE Zach Moore.

Patriots DE/OLB Chandler Jones (hip) is listed as questionable for Week 15 against the Dolphins.

Jones has gotten in limited practices the last three weeks, and there appears to be some optimism he could suit up against the Dolphins. Even if he does not make it back for Week 15, it is clear Jones is close after suffering a significant hip injury Week 7. Jones' return will bolster a defense that has held the Broncos, Colts, Lions, Packers and Chargers to an average of 18 points over the last five games.

Patriots DE/OLB Chandler Jones (hip) has been a limited participant in practice the last two weeks.

Jones did some agility work Wednesday, including leaping over bags and bending down for a fumble drill. Although there's no timetable for a return, it looks like Jones is getting closer after suffering a serious hip injury in Week 7. Jones, an emerging star pass rusher, had 4.5 sacks and 15 quarterback hurries before going down.

The hip injury Patriots DE Chandler Jones suffered Week 7 will sideline him at least six weeks, and could cost him the entire season.

That escalated quickly. Originally expected to be a month long absence, it now appears Jones will at best be available for the Patriots' Week 13 contest against the Packers, though New England is "not optimistic" Jones will be able to meet that timetable. Jones' injury is a huge blow for the Patriots' defense. Jones has 4.5 of New England's 18 sacks this season, and his pass-rushing presence makes everyone else along the defensive front better.

The Boston Globe reports Patriots RE Chandler Jones has a hip injury that will sideline him "about" one month.

The out-of-nowhere news is crushing for a Patriots pass rush that's been anchored by Jones this season. Jones has notched 4.5 of the Pats' 18 sacks, and been their only consistent generator of heat. This being the Pats, we may not receive an official timetable, but reporter Shalise Manza Young is very reliable. Jones' status should be updated when the Pats return to official practice on Wednesday. Jones sat out Tuesday's informal session.

Patriots RE Chandler Jones recorded two sacks against the Panthers Friday night.

Jones beat Panthers LT Byron Bell for both sacks, and was impressive in the run game as well. With the Patriots' improved secondary locking down opposing pass catchers, Jones should have plenty of time to get to the quarterback this season. 15-plus sacks are well within reason. Jones is a first-tier DL1 in IDP leagues.

Chandler Jones has been getting a lot of work as a 3-4 OLB at training camp.

The Patriots' hybrid defense is expected to show more 3-4 looks this season, which suits the highly athletic Jones just fine. He's capable of covering some tight ends on zone drops, although his main role will still be rushing the passer. Still only 24 years old, we're expecting Jones to top last season's 11.5 sacks. He's a first-tier DL1 in IDP leagues.

ESPN Boston's Mike Reiss believes third-year RE Chandler Jones is poised for a breakout.

Jones posted a solid 11.5 sacks last season, but Reiss believes the addition of Darrelle Revis to the Patriots' secondary could allow Jones to reach the 15-plus sack plateau this year. Only three pass rushers reached those heights in 2013. Jones should be one of the first defensive linemen off the board in IDP drafts.

The Boston Herald expects Patriots RE Chandler Jones to "bust out" in 2014.

You could say Jones already "busted out" last season when he racked up 11.5 sacks as a sophomore after posting six sacks in 2012. The former No. 21 overall pick played 98 percent of the defensive snaps. With the additions of Darrelle Revis and Brandon Browner to an already talented corner group, it should give Jones and LE Rob Ninkovich even more time to get after the quarterback. Jones will also likely have WLB Jamie Collins rushing the passer from his side.

Updating a previous item, Patriots RE Chandler Jones does not need offseason ankle surgery.

Jones battled both left and right ankle injuries for the second half of the season and into the playoffs. After storming out of the gates to pick up six sacks and three forced fumbles in the first eight games of the season, Jones' production fell off and he was shut out in those categories for the rest of the way. He may rest through OTAs, but Jones will be good to go for training camp.

Patriots RE Chandler Jones may need offseason ankle surgery.

The rookie defensive end played just two snaps in Sunday's playoff loss to the Ravens after suffering the initial injury in the Divisional Round versus the Texans. Jones battled a right ankle injury for much of the season, but his most recent one is to his left ankle. The first-round pick recorded six sacks in 2012, but just one came after Week 6.

The ankle injury that knocked Patriots RE Chandler Jones out of Sunday's game did not require a walking boot.

Jones was limping out of the locker room, but it's a good sign that the medical staff didn't deem the injury serious enough to warrant a boot. The Patriots' next practice report will come out on Wednesday.

Patriots RE Chandler Jones left Sunday's Divisional round game versus the Texans with an ankle injury.

Jones was seen conferring with the medical staff just before halftime. He remained on the sidelines in the third quarter, with Justin Francis taking his place. Consider the rookie pass rusher questionable to return.
