Cardinals GM Steve Keim said the team has had "great dialogue" with impending free agent OLB Chandler Jones.
Keim added the team will tag Jones if the two sides cannot reach an agreement by March 1, which is the same thing both president Michael Bidwill and coach Bruce Arians have said this offseason. It is clear Jones will be with the Cardinals for many years to come, but getting his deal done before the tag deadline would give Arizona some flexibility with their other big-name free agents. Both S Tony Jefferson and DE Calais Campbell could be candidates for the tag if Arizona can get something done with Jones. Feb 18 - 10:14 AM

Cardinals president Michael Bidwill said the team will use the franchise tag on OLB Chandler Jones if the two sides cannot reach a long-term agreement.

"We’re not going to mess around with that," Bidwill said. "He’s a great pass rusher, but if we can’t agree to terms that work for us, we’re just going to franchise him." Bruce Arians said the same thing in early January, and it is clear the Cardinals' position has not changed since then. Tagging Jones will give Arizona extra time to work out a long-term deal with the star pass rusher.

Speaking Monday, Cardinals coach Bruce Arians said the team will franchise tag impending free agent Chandler Jones if a long-term deal is not reached.

Calais Campbell and Tony Jefferson are also headed to the open market, but the Cardinals want to keep 27-year-old (in February) Jones after he tallied 11 sacks his first year in the desert. A long-term deal is the most likely outcome.

FOX Sports Arizona's Mike Jurecki reports the Cardinals would like to work out a long-term deal with impending free agent OLB Chandler Jones, but they could use the franchise tag in the "worst-case" scenario.

Jones has had an exceptional first season in Arizona, recording 9.5 sacks, getting consistent pressure, and standing up pretty well against the run. The Cardinals would not have traded for Jones unless they planned on keeping him around after this season, and it would be a surprise if he is allowed to hit the open market. Jones might not hit the $100-million mark with his next deal, but he should get pretty close.

The Cardinals are discussing a contract extension with OLB Chandler Jones.

Arizona sent New England a second-round pick (and since-released G/C Jonathan Cooper) in exchange for Jones, and isn't going to let him walk after one year in the desert. Jones has been an early-season animal for the Cardinals, piling up five sacks and two forced fumbles through seven starts. He's 26 years old.

Teammates believe Cardinals OLB Chandler Jones can get 20 sacks this season.

"There’s no doubt about it. He has that potential to be a 20-plus sack guy," Patrick Peterson said. "If (Dwight) Freeney had eight sacks in a backup role, Chandler should probably get 20 in a starting role," Tyrann Mathieu added. Considering only 10 players have ever cracked 20 sacks, that might not be a realistic goal for Jones, but it is a sign of how highly he is rated inside the clubhouse. After coming over from the Patriots via trade this offseason, Jones should offer Arizona the true pass-rushing threat they have been missing for several years.

Coach Bruce Arians is confident the Cardinals can extend newly-acquired OLB Chandler Jones' contract.

"When he hits free agency, we’ll have the dollars to make sure he stays," Arians said. The Patriots traded Jones at least in part because of the money it will take to keep him under contract past this season. Only 26 and with 36 career sacks in four seasons, Jones should be looking for something similar to the five-year, $85 million deal Olivier Vernon signed with the Giants.

The Cardinals are listing Chandler Jones as an outside linebacker.

Jones spent all of 2015 at defensive end, but played heavy snaps at linebacker in 2014. The linebacker designation isn't surprising for a 4-3 end headed to a 3-4 system. Regardless of Jones' listing, his primary job will be getting after the quarterback.

Cardinals acquired DE/OLB Chandler Jones from the Patriots in exchange for OG Jonathan Cooper and the No. 61 overall pick of the draft.

Still only 26, Jones is one of the league's best pass rushers, but is headed into the final year of his rookie contract. A looming mega-deal coupled with a bizarre January incident where Jones showed up to a police station high on synthetic marijuana seem to have cooled the Pats on their 2012 first-rounder. As for the Cardinals, Jones is the linchpin pass rusher they've been seeking for years now. He'll likely play outside linebacker in Bruce Arians' 3-4. An extension could be hammered out in short order. Jones has 36 sacks in 55 career games.

CSN New England suggests the Patriots could look to extend RE Chandler Jones' contract this offseason.

Jones is owed $7.8 million in the last year of his rookie contract, and New England can lower his cap number for next season by signing him to a long-term deal. Jones has had a comparable career to Saints DE Cameron Jordan, who landed a five-year, $55 million extension last offseason. Jones turns 26 later this month. He piled up 12.5 sacks and four forced fumbles in 15 games in 2015.

Patriots RE Chandler Jones (abdomen, toe) is listed as questionable for Sunday's AFC Championship game against the Broncos.

Jones exited New England's win over Kansas City in the fourth quarter but returned to practice on Wednesday. Jones, Jamie Collins (back) and Dont'a Hightower (knee) are all banged up but should be ready for Brady/Manning XVII on Sunday.

Patriots RE Chandler Jones played 36-of-89 defensive snaps in Saturday's Divisional Round win over the Chiefs.

That's about 40 percent. There was some concern Jones would be benched after an embarrassing incident involving synthetic marijuana last week but that didn't come into play on Saturday. Jones started and played well, recording the game's only sack and forcing a Knile Davis fumble in the third quarter. Jones appeared to suffer a right leg injury late in the fourth quarter. Obviously his status will need to be monitored ahead of next week's AFC championship.

Patriots RE Chandler Jones is expected to start against the Chiefs.

The Patriots reportedly like how Jones responded in practice this week. There was speculation Jones could be benched for his off-field situation, but it looks like he'll play his normal role. Jones shouldn’t struggle to make an impact against Chiefs LT Eric Fisher.

Patriots RE Chandler Jones (abdomen, toe) is listed as questionable for Saturday's Divisional Round game against the Chiefs.

Jones was limited all week, putting him on track to play. His off-field issues are a bigger concern for his playing time. Barring an in-game punishment, Jones should see close to his normal snaps.

The Foxboro Police Department has released new details about its Sunday morning interaction with Patriots RE Chandler Jones.

In short, Jones seemed to be out of his mind, but not violent. He could have still easily ended up arrested after literally prostrating himself on the police department's steps, but was hospitalized instead. As of this moment, his Divisional Round status/usage does not appear to be in doubt. In-game punishment can't be ruled out, however. Coach Bill Belichick benched Wes Welker for the first series of New England's 2011 Divisional Round loss to the Jets.
