Bengals WLB Vontaze Burfict (injured reserve) may need additional knee surgery.
Burfict had his knee scoped in October. He was initially expected to miss a couple weeks, but got sent to season-ending I.R. on Tuesday. Burfict is still walking with a noticeable limp and is deciding on whether to have more surgery or continue with rehab. Coach Marvin Lewis wouldn't commit to Burfict being ready for the start of next season. It's been a rough year for Burfict injury-wise. Dec 11 - 9:46 AM

Date:

Bengals placed WLB Vontaze Burfict (knee surgery) on injured reserve, ending his season.

The move ends an injury-plagued and ineffective season for the third-year pro. Burfict was slowed by neck issues and a concussion before undergoing a supposedly minor knee operation in late October. Burfict went under the knife 41 days ago, and obviously wasn't close to a return. He'll close the book on 2014 with just 223 snaps across five appearances. A playmaking difference maker both in coverage and as a run stopper when healthy, Burfict should bounce back in 2015. He's only 24.
Dec 9 - 2:40 PM

Bengals WLB Vontaze Burfict (knee) has been ruled out for Week 14.

Burfict's knee "scope" was clearly more serious than the team let on.
Dec 5 - 1:38 PM

Bengals WLB Vontaze Burfict (knee) is inactive for Sunday's Week 13 game at Tampa.

Burfict remains week-to-week after not practicing all week. The oft-injured playmaker is not recovering from his scope as quickly as the Bengals had hoped. The rest of their inactives: DE Margus Hunt, RB Rex Burkhead, CB Chris Lewis-Harris, T Tanner Hawkinson, WR Greg Little and T Jamon Meredith.
Nov 30 - 11:53 AM

Bengals WLB Vontaze Burfict (knee) missed practice all week.

He won't play at Tampa. Coach Marvin Lewis said after Friday's practice that Burfict is "progressing," but he said the same thing on Friday last week.
Nov 28 - 1:04 PM

Bengals coach Marvin Lewis believes WLB Vontaze Burfict (knee scope) is "progressing" toward a return.

Naturally, Lewis didn't disclose when Burfict might actually suit up. Sunday's tilt with the Texans will mark the fourth straight game he's missed. Going by his timetable, there's a chance Burfict will be ready for Week 13, but that should not be taken for granted.

Nov 21 - 2:06 PM

Bengals WLB Vontaze Burfict had his left knee scoped on Wednesday and is expected to miss at least two games.

That's extremely optimistic, as most players need about four weeks to recover from a scope. Burfict can't stay off the trainer's table this season. He's missed time with a couple concussions, a neck injury, and now this. With MLB Rey Maualuga (hamstring) also on the shelf, Emmanuel Lamur and Vincent Rey will be the Bengals' top two linebackers. Burfict has played just 223 snaps this season.
Oct 29 - 12:04 PM

Bengals WLB Vontaze Burfict (neck) practiced in full on Thursday, and is on track for Week 8.

Barring a setback, Burfict will be good to go against the Ravens. Battling through injuries, Burfict has been limited to 161 snaps this season.
Oct 23 - 5:25 PM

Speaking Monday, Bengals coach Marvin Lewis said WLB Vontaze Burfict (cervical strain) is "fine."

It's unclear what terms Lewis was speaking in, or if Burfict has a chance to suit up for Week 8. His status will be updated later this week.
Oct 20 - 3:21 PM

Bengals WLB Vontaze Burfict has been diagnosed with a cervical strain.

Burfict suffered the injury when the crown of his helmet made contact with Andrew Luck. It's a scary situation for a player that has had some serious concussion issues already. Safety Taylor Mays rookie Marquis Flowers were forced to fill in for Burfict with the Bengals linebacking corps absolutely decimated.

Oct 19 - 1:49 PM

Bengals WLB Vontaze Burfict was fined $25,000 for deliberately twisting the ankles of Cam Newton and Greg Olsen in Week 6.

Burfict drew the ire of the Panthers by grabbing and twisting the balky ankles of both Newton and Olsen while on the ground after plays were over. It was dirty on Burfict's end. Newton is recovering from offseason ankle surgery, while Olsen was hobbled all week by a bum ankle. On Olsen's touchdown catch-and-run, Burfict was caught in the act on camera. Olsen was in noticeable pain. Some around the league believe the NFL was too easy on Burfict.
