The Saints have "high hopes" for 2012 fourth-rounder WR Nick Toon.
Toon is 100 percent after missing his entire rookie year with a foot injury. The same is true of fellow 2012 picks OT Marcel Jones (knee surgery) and OG Andrew Tiller (triceps). Toon has undergone two left foot operations since his senior year at Wisconsin, but insists he's ready to go. Saints WR Nick Toon will likely need foot surgery as he spends his rookie year on injured reserve.

Toon played in the preseason finale, but interim coach Aaron Kromer said the rookie still "wasn't ready," and the chronic problems in his foot now need to be surgically addressed. The good news is Toon should be able to rest up in a redshirt rookie season. The bad news is his foot has been problematic for over a year, and not something Toon is capable of playing effectively through.

After an impressive offseason, Toon quickly fell behind Adrian Arrington, Joseph Morgan and Courtney Roby while dealing with a foot injury in training camp. Toon will have a shot at the No. 3 or 4 receiver role next season after red-shirting as a rookie.

Toon finally returned to practice Tuesday after missing New Orleans' first four preseason games with a foot injury that's lingered since his senior year at Wisconsin. Beat writer Mike Triplett expects him to be a frequent inactive early in the season. The 6-foot-2, 215-pound Toon eventually profiles as a sure-handed slot receiver in New Orleans' high-octane attack, but he's off the fantasy radar outside Dynasty leagues.

Toon was plagued by a foot injury throughout his senior year and pre-draft training, so this appears to be a setback. The Saints are optimistic he won't miss more than 6-10 days. Off to a slow camp start, Toon was enjoying his best practice before the injury. Adrian Arrington is out in front of the rookie at this point.

At 6'2" and 218 pounds with reliable hands, Toon has already drawn comparisons to Marques Colston from OC Pete Carmichael. With an impressive showing in training camp, Toon could begin pushing Devery Henderson for snaps as well.

"He is going to be a contributor for us," added Colston. "He is very intelligent and smooth. He just gets it." Colston believes Toon can step in immediately to help fill the void left by Robert Meachem while OC Pete Carmichael compares Al's son to Colston in terms of range and hands. Toon will battle Adrian Arrington for the No. 4 receiver role behind Colston, Lance Moore, and Devery Henderson.

Saints OC Pete Carmichael says fourth-round pick Nick Toon reminds him of Marques Colston.

"His range and his hands remind me more of Colston," Carmichael said. "He runs better than I think people give him credit. He timed real well at the Combine. I think that speed shows up on film." Toon will compete with Lance Moore, Devery Henderson, and Adrian Arrington for playing time across from Colston.

A crisp route runner with excellent hands, the 6-foot-2, 215 pound Toon's stock was hurt by durability concerns. Toon plays big, and has the potential to be a playmaker on the outside. He lacks breakaway speed, however, and should be more of a move-the-chains type in New Orleans' methodical short-passing attack. Any Saints' skill player is worth monitoring in fantasy leagues, but Toon's ceiling as a rookie will be WR5.

Wisconsin WR Nick Toon ran in the low 4.5s at his Pro Day Wednesday, according to SI's Tony Pauline.

Pauline also heard from a scout who timed Toon's forty at 4.48. After failing to meet lofty expectations during his senior year due to multiple injuries, Toon ran a 4.54 "official" time at the Combine. Known for his crisp routes, Toon's main deficiency will be is inability to stay healthy. We expect Toon to be an early third-day pick.
