Coach Rob Chudzinski insists Trent Richardson's (leg) absence from OTAs — and likely minicamp — is "precautionary."
"We'll take it day-by-day," Chud said. We don't doubt that the Browns are being extra cautious with last year's No. 3 overall pick, but the problem is Richardson requiring so much caution to begin with. He's been banged up since the second his name was called in New York, and never really approached 100 percent health as a rookie. Richardson's upside remains sky high — there's a reason he was the No. 3 pick — but he must prove he can stay healthy as a sophomore. Constant nagging injuries won't cut it in the rugged AFC North. Trent Richardson is not participating in this week's OTAs due to a lower-leg muscle pull.

Coach Rob Chudzinski admitted that Richardson might not even be ready for June 4-6 minicamp. It's not a serious injury, but T-Rich did struggle badly with nagging injuries as a rookie. He missed one game and averaged a disappointing 3.55 yards.

Trent Richardson isn't expected to face criminal charges after being accused of assault by two women in a civil lawsuit.

The Elyria, Ohio district attorney's office has declined to pursue charges because of "conflicting statements and a lack of evidence." It suggests the suit is little more than a thinly-veiled money grab. From a football perspective, it's a dead issue for T-Rich.

Browns OC Norv Turner has coached the NFL's leading rusher five times with three different players (Emmitt Smith, Ricky Williams, LaDainian Tomlinson).

Turner took a lot of heat for his bungling of Ryan Matthews in San Diego, but that was an exception to the rule. Normally, he loves riding one back and usually devises schemes that lead to success. It's more good news for Trent Richardson, who is fully healthy after nagging injuries played a part in his disappointing 3.55 YPC average last season.

Trent Richardson (ribs) said he felt "100 percent" at Browns' voluntary workouts Tuesday.

Richardson recently hinted that he still wasn't over last year's rib injury, but that's apparently not the case. T-Rich says it's now "way easier to breathe," and that he can "sleep at night." Richardson fractured multiple ribs in Week 6, and played through it for the rest of the season. T-Rich showed great toughness as a rookie, but also picked up multiple minor ailments. Hopefully he'll have better luck in 2013.
Apr 16 - 6:54 PM

Trent Richardson told the Cleveland Plain Dealer that he may "always have to deal with some lingering pain" following last year's rib injury.

Richardson anticipates being full strength by camp, but underwent some more physical exams in March and it appears he remains in recovery mode. Richardson broke multiple ribs in Week 6 and played with them still cracked the rest of the way. We still expect the Browns to lean on him as a workhorse back.

Trent Richardson is facing a civil suit for allegedly assaulting a pair of women last December.

The lawsuit claims Richardson, his brother Tyrell, Richardson's girlfriend, and two others verbally and physically abused Krystal Jones and Kathleen Hunter at Richardson's home in the early hours of December 10. The complaint accuses Richardson of slamming his fist onto the hood of Jones' vehicle, causing $1,500 in damage, and orchestrating a physical assault on the two women. It's always fishy when "civil suits" are brought forth without formal criminal charges, making it appear very much like the women are only after Richardson's money. The suit definitely won't affect Richardson's 2013 availability, and we wouldn't be surprised if it went away soon.
Mar 23 - 10:06 AM

The Browns' new coaching staff has given Trent Richardson the impression that he'll be the foundation of their 2013 offense.

"They told me I better be in the best shape ever. They told me they’re gonna run the shoes off of me," Richardson said. "They’re gonna pass me the ball more. ... They’re going to do whatever they can. And they want me to be a leader for this team. Voice-wise, they want me to lead the group. They want me to get on that horse, man. They want me to be that stallion that’s gonna take this program to another level." T-Rich could push for 400 touches if he stays healthy.
Mar 22 - 12:08 PM

Trent Richardson played on 702 offensive snaps in 2012, ninth-most among NFL running backs.

Despite undergoing a knee a scope in August, breaking 2-3 ribs in Week 6 and sitting out Week 17 due to an ankle sprain, Richardson was a workhorse. He was a true three-down and goal-line back, reaching at least 20 touches nine times and scoring 12 touchdowns. With full health, this kind of workload and creative offensive mind Rob Chudzinski now in charge, there's plenty of upside for Richardson's second NFL season.

Trent Richardson conceded that broken ribs affected his performance down the stretch in his rookie season.

"My ribs were broken, and it's tough playing like that," said Richardson. "It's real tough playing like that." Richardson will need 3-4 more weeks before the ribs completely heal. "I still really can't lay flat or on my side," said Richardson. "I know I'll be healthy before next season. I'll be back right in training camp, OTAs, and you’ll see me back skinny again. I won't have that vest on."
Jan 3 - 6:13 PM

Trent Richardson says the ankle injury that held him out for Week 17 was a "mild" high-ankle sprain.

T-Rich also finally admitted that he's been playing through 2-3 broken ribs since Week 6. The pain is still serious enough that he has to sleep standing up. That injury was likely behind Richardson's precipitous decline in effectiveness down the stretch, though the Browns have to be pleased that their bell cow was able to grind it out while playing through pain. Richardson managed to finish ninth in fantasy points despite knee, ankle, chest, rib, and finger issues. The injuries should not affect his preparation for the 2013 season.

Trent Richardson (ankle) missed practice again on Friday and has been ruled out for Week 17.

ESPN Cleveland's Tony Grossi accurately reported earlier in the day that Richardson had a "zero" percent chance of suiting up. Montario Hardesty will carry the load with Brandon Jackson in a change-of-pace role. Thad Lewis is expected to be under center as Cleveland's quarterback. Quite a way for head coach Pat Shurmur to go out.

ESPN Cleveland's Tony Grossi said there's a "zero" percent chance Trent Richardson (ankle) plays this week against the Steelers.

Richardson's chances of playing have always been slim, but head coach Pat Shurmur has refused to rule him out for the Week 17 finale. Montario Hardesty is expected to carry the load against Pittsburgh while Brandon Jackson works in as the change-of-pace back. If Richardson doesn't play, he'll end his rookie season with 950 yards and 11 touchdowns on 267 carries, which boils down to just a 3.6 YPC average. He also added 51 catches for 367 yards and a score. Richardson should return as a low-end RB1 in 2013.

Browns offensive coordinator Brad Childress says Trent Richardson (ankle) could be a "spot player" in Week 17 if he's cleared to play.

It sounds like the team has made up their mind that Montario Hardesty will get the start against the Steelers. Richardson didn't practice at all on Wednesday or Thursday, and we still believe that Cleveland will hold the rookie out entirely. Richardson is 50 yards shy of posting a 1,000-yard rushing season. Brandon Jackson, who has been an inactive for much of the season, will likely serve as the change-of-pace behind Hardesty.

Trent Richardson (ankle) did not practice Thursday.

Richardson initially thought that he had a serious ankle injury and might need surgery. Those fears were squashed as he was diagnosed with a simple sprain. Still, it wouldn't make much sense for Richardson to play in the finale at far less than 100 percent. Beat writer Tony Grossi says it's "almost official" that he'll be inactive. Look for Montario Hardesty to start and Brandon Jackson to work as the change-of--pace back against the Steelers' No. 2 run defense.
