NFL suspended Bears ILB Jerrell Freeman 10 games for violating the league's policy on performance-enhancing substances.
It's Freeman's second PED ban in as many years as a Bear. The first was handed down last November. Fortuitously for Freeman, he's already on injured reserve with a torn pectoral. He'll "serve" the first eight games of the suspension this year, and then be sidelined for Weeks 1 and 2 next year. Freeman is under contract for $3.5 million in 2018, but it's hard to believe the oft-banned linebacker will be back at that price. Freeman turns 32 next May. Mon, Oct 30, 2017 02:49:00 PM

Bears placed ILB Jerrell Freeman on injured reserve with a pectoral injury.

Freeman also has a concussion. Signed to a three-year, $12 million contract in March 2016, Freeman was an every-down player last season, though he did miss time with a PED suspension. He was slated for the same duties this year. The Chicago Tribune expects 2016 fourth-rounder Nick Kwiatkoski to see the biggest uptick in playing time. Freeman's loss thins what could be an underrated defense in 2017.

Bears ILB Jerrell Freeman has a pectoral injury in addition to his concussion.

You could consider him questionable for Week 2. Font of information John Fox wasn't forthcoming on Monday. Freeman plays all three downs, and would be a big loss against a Bucs team opening its season at home.

Bears ILB Jerrell Freeman suffered a concussion in Week 1.

His status for Week 2 against the Bucs is uncertain. A true three-down inside linebacker, Freeman's presence is critical in both run defense and coverage.

Bears activated ILB Jerrell Freeman from the reserve/suspended list.

Freeman should immediately slide back in as an every-down player. In the first season of a three-year contract, Freeman has been a solid signing for a rebuilding team. He should be back at his $3.5 million salary in 2017 unless his suspension has soured the Bears.

NFL suspended Bears ILB Jerrell Freeman four games for violating the league's policy on performance-enhancing substances.

He's the second Bear in as many weeks to earn a PED ban. We'll see if Freeman trots out the usual "Adderall" excuse. Signed to a three-year, $12 million deal in March, Freeman has been an excellent addition, standing up to the run and holding his own in coverage. It further thins what is becoming a comically-decimated team. The Bears are going to be a Triple-A squad down the stretch. Fourth-rounder Nick Kwiatkoski is expected to take Freeman's starting spot.

Bears signed ILB Jerrell Freeman to a three-year, $12 million contract with $6 million guaranteed.

He can earn another $2 million via incentives. The Bears placed a major emphasis on upgrading at inside linebacker, landing both of the top free agent ILBs available with Danny Trevathan also joining Chicago on a four-year, $24.5 million deal. A career overachiever out of Mary Hardin-Baylor, Freeman spent three years in the CFL before being signed by the Colts in 2012, and immediately become one of Indy's best defensive players. Freeman and Trevathan were PFF's Nos. 2 (Freeman) and 6 (Trevathan) inside linebackers out of 60 qualifiers last season. Bears 2015 ILBs Christian Jones, Jonathan Anderson, and Shea McClellin ranked 31st, 32nd, and 44th.

Free agent ILB Jerrell Freeman will visit the Bears on Friday.

Freeman was getting nowhere in contract talks with Indy and now he'll head to Chicago for his first visit. Colts beat writer Chris Hagan said the Giants and Falcons are also "in the mix." The Bears didn't get much help from inside linebackers Shea McClellin and Christian Jones last year. Pairing Freeman with newly signed ILB Danny Trevathan would be a big upgrade.

FOX 59 Indy's Chris Hagan reports talks between the Colts and free agent ILB Jerrell Freeman "are not going well."

Freeman is not expected to give the Colts a hometown discount, and Indy does not appear willing to move off their current offer. As it stands, it seems likely Freeman is playing elsewhere come September. The Chiefs were reportedly "poking around" Freeman earlier in the week, but they ended up re-signing Derrick Johnson. Freeman is Rotoworld's No. 1 available inside linebacker.

Yahoo! Sports' Charles Robinson reports the Chiefs are "poking around" free agent ILB Jerrell Freeman.

According to Robinson, it doesn't sound like the Chiefs' talks with free agent ILB Derrick Johnson are going well, and they may be turning their attention to Freeman. Freeman is younger than Johnson, less injury-prone, and graded out as PFF's No. 2 inside linebacker last season. He'd be a nice get.

Free agent ILB Jerrell Freeman isn't expected to give the Colts any "hometown discount."

"You gotta kinda do what’s best for you," Freeman said. "I've been playing for the league minimum for three years and ended up signing the [RFA] tender [last season], which was best for the team. Went ahead and signed it, and now I'm in free agency and guess I’ll have to do what’s best for me." Freeman, 30 in May, seems all but certain to chase the fattest pay check with this likely being his lone bite at the free-agency apple after spending his early years in the CFL.
Wed, Mar 2, 2016 09:18:00 AM's Kevin Bowen suggests free agent ILB Jerrell Freeman could be allowed to hit the open market.

Owner Jim Irsay has also said he "wants to get younger" on defense. 29-year-old Freeman might be viewed expendable with D’Qwell Jackson, Nate Irving, and Sio Moore under contract. Freeman should be seeking David Harris money (three years, $22M) after finishing as PFF’s No. 2 inside linebacker.

Colts ILB Jerrell Freeman (hamstring) is listed as probable for Week 15.

He's back after missing Weeks 13 and 14. Freeman has been one of the NFL's best run-stopping inside linebackers this season. His return is a downgrade to the fantasy matchups for Chris Polk, Jonathan Grimes, and Alfred Blue.

Colts coach Chuck Pagano described ILB Jerrell Freeman as "week to week" with a Grade 2 hamstring strain.

It's a concern for Indy's run defense, which has largely sputtered even with Freeman in the lineup over the last two months. Among 3-4 inside linebackers, Pro Football Focus has awarded only Luke Kuechly a higher run-stopping grade than Freeman this season. The Colts face DeAngelo Williams this week.

Colts ILB Jerrell Freeman left Week 12 against the Bucs with hamstring injury.

He's out for the game. Nate Irving replaced Freeman in base sets.
