Kellen Moore took first-team snaps ahead of Dan Orlovsky at Wednesday's OTAs.

Both are competing for backup reps behind starter Matthew Stafford. Moore completed 10 of his 12 passes while Orlovsky was 8-of-11. Moore is six years younger than Orlovsky and was given more guaranteed money this offseason. Neither one played a snap last season.

Kellen Moore will compete for the Lions' backup quarterback job.

Moore will be given an opportunity to unseat Dan Orlovsky after spending last year as the No. 3 quarterback. He was non-tendered this offseason for cap purposes and could be in the mix for backup duties with a strong camp. It's perhaps telling the Lions gave Moore more guaranteed money than Orlovsky, who re-signed on a one-year deal. Moore has yet to appear in an NFL game.

Lions re-signed QB Kellen Moore to a two-year contract.

Although Moore has appeared competent at times in preseason games against defenders who've later been cut, his physical limitations will keep him on the pine. The 25-year-old is behind Matt Stafford and Dan Orlovsky in Detroit.
Mar 6 - 1:11 PM

The Lions will not tender restricted free agents QB Kellen Moore and LB Josh Bynes.

They'll become unrestricted free agents. The Lions still hope to bring Moore back at near the minimum, but didn't deem him worthy of the lowest possible tender price. Moore obviously doesn't have a future as a starter in the NFL, but the Lions may see him as Matthew Stafford's No. 2 in 2015 -- a job Dan Orlovsky had last year.
Feb 20 - 9:54 AM

The Detroit Free Press' Dave Birkett reports the Lions hope to re-sign restricted free agent QB Kellen Moore.

With the Lions looking for all the cap room they can find to re-sign Ndamukong Suh, it is possible Detroit non-tenders Moore only to bring him back later in free agency. Moore lacks the physical tools to be a starter in the NFL, but he is a very smart player and valuable asset inside the quarterback room. Detroit's No. 2 quarterback, Dan Orlovsky, is an unrestricted free agent.

ESPN's Michael Rothstein doesn't expect the Lions to re-sign Kellen Moore.

Moore has spent the last three seasons as Detroit's No. 3 quarterback. A restricted free agent, the Lions can save cap space by non-tendering him. Moore could ultimately be brought back on a minimum deal.
Feb 6 - 8:12 PM

Lions coach Jim Caldwell hinted he plans to keep three quarterbacks.

"It’s tough this day and age, with the way our game is, without a third quarterback," Caldwell admitted. "I’ve had a couple places where we carried two. We’ll see what happens." Kellen Moore has spent the last two years as Detroit's No. 3 quarterback, but needs a strong camp to secure his roster spot and will be pushed by rookie James Franklin. Dan Orlovsky is slated to open the season as Matthew Stafford's backup.

Kellen Moore is expected to stick as the Lions' third quarterback.

The bulked up Moore has shown significant improvement in Year 2. Through three preseason games, he's gone 20-of-30 (66.6 percent) for 223 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. It's good for a 110.8 passer rating. The Lions are grooming Moore as Matthew Stafford's long-term backup as 33-year-old Shaun Hill enters the final year of his contract.

Kellen Moore finished the preseason 41-of-78 (52.6 percent) for 434 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions.

Moore was at his best in the preseason finale against the Bills when he was allowed to play the final three quarters. Even if he doesn't survive the cut, he's fully expected to stick on the Lions' practice squad as the third quarterback behind Matthew Stafford and Shaun Hill.

Lions coach Jim Schwartz says undrafted rookie QB Kellen Moore "grasped the offense very well" in minicamp.

"It’s well documented that he doesn’t have the strongest arm, (or) prototypical size," Schwartz said. "(But) you get seven points for moving the ball and getting it into the end zone, and that’s what he has done so far. ... He finds a way to get it done." Moore has drawn almost universally negative reviews from the media, but the Lions sound prepared to give him a long look in camp. He's still almost certainly headed for the practice squad, however.

According to's Anwar Richardson, undrafted rookie QB Kellen Moore's lack of arm strength "has been noticeable" in offseason workouts.

Per Richardson, Moore's passes lack "a significant zip," and "many ... float toward receivers." Moore had a great college career, but he's going to get exposed in live, game action. He's a practice squad candidate at best in Detroit.

Coach Jim Schwartz isn't sure if the Lions will carry three quarterbacks.

The Lions have only Shaun Hill and UDFA Kellen Moore under contract behind Matthew Stafford. Moore says he signed with the Lions in part because they had just two other quarterbacks. He may just end up on the practice squad, though.

Lions agreed to terms with Boise State QB Kellen Moore.

The all-time winningest quarterback in NCAA history, Moore is a classic case of a player who was elite in college but doesn't project favorably at the next level. A four-year starter, Moore's intangibles and outstanding anticipation and timing in his throws will have to compensate for his lack of physical tools to make it in the NFL. In Detroit, he would compete as a third-stringer behind Matthew Stafford and Shaun Hill.

Sporting News draft analyst Russ Lande believes Boise State QB Kellen Moore is in danger of going undrafted after a poor Senior Bowl.

Per Lande, Moore "will have to be amazing at the Combine and his Pro Day if he hopes to get drafted." Compared in stature to an equipment manager rather than a quarterback by FOX's Alex Marvez, Moore reportedly showed "below average arm strength" and was inaccurate on passes beyond ten yards in Mobile.
