49ers placed ILB Michael Wilhoite (ankle) on injured reserve.
The move creates a spot for Mike Davis on the active roster. Wilhoite took a step back in his second season as a full-time starter, receiving negative PFF grades in both coverage and run support. He'll return as a restricted free agent in 2016, but should face competition for snaps. Jan 2 - 4:40 PM

49ers ILB Michael Wilhoite (hamstring) will resume practicing this week.

Coach Jim Tomsula said Wilhoite was getting close last week. When healthy, Wilhoite should start opposite NaVorro Bowman.

49ers coach Jim Tomsula said ILB Michael Wilhoite (hamstring) could come off the active/NFI list soon.

A recent MRI exam was reportedly encouraging. With Patrick Willis and Chris Borland retiring this offseason, Wilhoite is expected to start opposite NaVorro Bowman when healthy. Wilhoite recorded 87 tackles in 16 starts last season.

49ers placed ILB Michael Wilhoite (hamstring) on the active/NFI list.

Coach Jim Tomsula doesn’t consider Wilhoite’s injury a long-term concern. Wilhoite will start opposite ILB NaVorro Bowman when healthy.

49ers re-signed exclusive rights free agent ILB Michael Wilhoite to a one-year, $660,000 contract.

The 49ers had been in talks with Wilhoite on a long-term contract. Under control for the next two years, Wilhoite will likely have to play out 2015 without an extension. Wilhoite is penned in as the starter next to Navorro Bowman.

49ers GM Trent Baalke said Friday the team is working to extend ILB Michael Wilhoite's contract.

The Sacramento Bee reported the 49ers were trying to trade Wilhoite in early March. Following the surprise retirements of Patrick Willis and Chris Borland, the team has done a full 180. Wilhoite is currently an unsigned exclusive rights free agent. If the 49ers are cap savvy, they'll let him play 2015 on a minimum tender and work to extend Wilhoite if he plays well this season.

49ers GM Trent Baalke considers ILB Michael Wilhoite the favorite to start opposite NaVorro Bowman.

Wilhoite was believed to be on the trade block before Patrick Willis and Chris Borland's shock retirements, but Baalke claims that wasn't the case. A former undrafted free agent, Wilhoite was a 16-game starter last season, but was sub-replacement level. Especially considering Bowman's (knee) health, the 49ers badly need to add bodies at inside linebacker.

49ers extended tenders to exclusive rights free agents ILB Michael Wilhoite and DL Tony Jerod-Eddie.

Wilhoite started all 16 games in place of Navorro Bowman last season, but is reportedly being shopped with Patrick Willis, Chris Borland and Bowman all returning. Jerod-Eddie will compete with Darnell Dockett and Tank Carradine for the left end job vacated by Ray McDonald.

The Sacramento Bee reports the 49ers have placed exclusive rights free agent ILB Michael Wilhoite on the trade block.

The 49ers have a surplus of inside linebackers with Patrick Willis, Chris Borland and Navorro Bowman all returning next year. Wilhoite was a 16-game starter in 2014, but would be limited to a backup role if re-signed. San Francisco is seeking a sixth- or seventh-round pick for Wilhoite.

49ers ILB Michael Wilhoite has won the starting job opposite Patrick Willis.

Wilhoite beat out Chris Borland for the right to fill in for Navorro Bowman (knee). It's quite possible the two will end up rotating, curbing any potential IDP appeal.

DC Vic Fangio said the ILB competition between Michael Wilhoite and Chris Borland is too close to call.

This is the battle to see who will hold down the spot next to Patrick Willis until Navorro Bowman (knee) returns around midseason. It's possible that Wilhoite and Borland will end up rotating, capping any IDP appeal and highlighting another weakened spot in the 49ers defense. They'll already be without Aldon Smith, who is facing a 6-8 game suspension.

49ers ILB Michael Wilhoite played with the first team during OTAs.

Wilhoite seems to be the front-runner to replace injured NaVorro Bowman, but he will have to hold off rookie Chris Borland and second-year LB Nick Moody. No matter who starts, the 49ers will likely use a rotation until Bowman returns. Bowman is expected to start the year on PUP but should return by midseason.

49ers promoted LB Michael Wilhoite from their practice squad.

Undrafted out of Washburn, Wilhoite may get a look on special teams if he makes it up on game days. By using the roster spot on Wilhoite instead of a kicker, it's a sign that David Akers (pelvis) is healthy enough to play on Sunday.
