The NFL will review the Alfonzo Dennard case.
Commissioner Roger Goodell may want to suspend Dennard after the Pats' corner was sentenced to 30 days in jail for assaulting a police officer, but he's unlikely to be able to. When the incident happened, Dennard was not an NFL employee. It's a point the players association would argue vehemently. We fully expect Dennard to line up as a starter across from Aqib Talib come Week 1. Apr 11 - 11:57 AM

Date:

Patriots RCB Alfonzo Dennard was sentenced to 30 days in jail and two years' probation Thursday.

Dennard was found guilty of assaulting a police officer after a fight outside a Nebraska bar last April. However, the judge delayed his jail start date until March 1 of 2014, so he'll be available for the entire offseason program and regular season. The NFL is not expected to discipline Dennard because the incident occurred before he was in the league. It's another gamble that pays off for the Patriots, as Dennard was expected to be at least a second-round pick before the fight. Bill Belichick & Co. stole him in the seventh round.

Patriots RCB Alfonzo Dennard will be sentenced on Thursday in connection with his felony assault conviction.

Dennard was found guilty of assaulting a police officer, though the incident took place before he formally became an NFL player. According to the Boston Globe, the "general" sentence for a conviction like Dennard's in Nebraska is 90-180 days in jail. The Globe does not expect Dennard to face a league suspension.
Apr 8 - 3:32 PM

The Boston Globe believes Patriots RCB Alfonzo Dennard is unlikely to face a suspension for his assault conviction because the incident took place before he was an NFL player.

Beat writer Greg Bedard believes the case differs from Terrelle Pryor's — where the NFL upheld a five-game ban initially handed down by the NCAA — because Pryor was expressly trying to circumvent punishment by entering the 2011 Supplemental Draft. Dennard was under neither NCAA nor NFL jurisdiction at the time of his April 2012 incident. Jets NT Kenrick Ellis wasn't suspended under circumstances similar to Dennard's in 2011. Dennard is also likely to escape jail time, going on probation instead.
Feb 20 - 7:25 PM

A Lancaster County (Nebraska) attorney tells the Omaha World-Herald a typical sentence in a case like Patriots CB Alfonzo Dennard's ranges from probation to 180 days in jail.

Dennard was convicted of third-degree felony assault on a police officer and misdemeanor resisting arrest on Wednesday, but could escape with no jail time in a case that carries a maximum five-year prison sentence. Even "just" 180 days in jail would have Dennard missing less than half of the 2013 season. He'll be sentenced on April 11.
Feb 20 - 1:26 PM

Patriots CB Alfonzo Dennard has been convicted of third-degree felony assault on a police officer and misdemeanor resisting arrest.

During a fight outside a Nebraska bar last April, Dennard pushed and then punched an intervening police officer in the jaw. The incident sent his draft stock plummeting, allowing the Patriots to scoop him up in the seventh round. The felony charge carries a maximum penalty of five years in jail and/or a $10,000 fine. Sentencing has been scheduled for April 11 and Dennard can expect a suspension from the NFL as well.
Feb 20 - 12:02 PM

Patriots CB Alfonzo Dennard's assault trial has begun in Nebraska.

Dennard is charged with third-degree assault on an officer, resisting arrest and third-degree assault. The "assault on an officer" charge is a felony, and comes with a maximum sentence of five years in jail. The charges stem from an incident that happened on the eve of last year's draft. Viewed as a potential day-two pick before his run-in with the law, Dennard ended up falling to the Pats in round seven. He started seven games and intercepted three passes as a rookie.
Feb 12 - 2:30 PM

Patriots CB Alfonzo Dennard was forced from New England's Week 15 game against the 49ers with a knee injury, and is questionable to return.

Dennard departed in the first half, and failed to return before the fourth quarter. His night is almost certainly through. Kyle Arrington is finishing out the game opposite Devin McCourty.

Patriots CB Alfonzo Dennard played 48-of-57 defensive snaps in last week's loss to the Seahawks.

Dennard was inactive for the first four weeks, but is being used ahead of Sterling Moore as the Patriots' nickelback, and replaced RCB Kyle Arrington on Sunday. If he continues to play at a high level, Dennard could be an option to take over full-time for Arrington as the starter opposite Devin McCourty.

The Patriots have ruled out CB Alfonzo Dennard (hamstring) and OL Nick McDonald (shoulder) for Sunday's game against the Titans.

Dennard was a late addition to the injury report, and will not travel with the team. McDonald returned to practice Thursday after missing nearly two weeks with a shoulder injury, and is behind Ryan Wendell as the backup to Logan Mankins and Donald Thomas.

The Patriots have been aligning seventh-round DB Alfonzo Dennard at cornerback during OTAs.

Dennard is versatile enough to play corner on the inside or outside and can help out at safety. He'll spend training camp trying to beat out the likes of Will Allen, Sterling Moore, and Marquice Cole for a roster spot.

Patriots rookie CB Alfonzo Dennard pleaded not guilty Wednesday to third-degree assault of a police officer.

He also faces charges of resisting arrest. His next court date has not yet been set. The Patriots -- and the rest of the NFL -- were well aware of Dennard's arrest before he was drafted. It shouldn't affect his bid for a roster spot much.

Nebraska coach Bo Pelini would "put (his) reputation" on the line for Patriots seventh-round CB Alfonzo Dennard.

Dennard will be arraigned on May 30 on charges that he assaulted a police officer. "That isn't who he is, that's never been who he is, and that's not going to be who he is in the future," Dennard's college coach said. The Patriots are probably more concerned about Dennard's straight-line speed and relatively stiff hips, though he faces up to five years in prison if convicted.

Patriots agreed to terms with seventh-round CB Alfonzo Dennard on a four-year contract.

A consensus first-round pick entering the 2011 season, Dennard's draft stock plummeted after a rough Senior Bowl and questions that he would have to move to safety after a disappointing Combine performance. He's talented enough to make the Patriots roster this season.

Patriots seventh-round CB Alfonzo Dennard has waived his right to a preliminary hearing in his felony assault of a police officer case.

He'll now be arraigned on May 30 in Lancaster County, Neb. Dennard is accused of punching a police officer in the face as he attempted to break up a fight. He faces up to five years in prison if convicted. Provided he can move past his legal issues, Dennard is talented enough to crack the Patriots' 53-man roster.
