Texans second-year OG Brandon Brooks has slimmed down to 325 pounds after weighing 355 last April.
The 76th overall pick in the 2012 draft, Brooks' rookie year was a disappointment as he battled weight problems and never cracked the starting lineup for a team that struggled at right guard. The Texans need offensive linemen to be in shape for their zone scheme. Brooks' 2013 role will be decided in camp. Apr 8 - 2:25 PM

Texans third-round OG Brandon Brooks reported to training camp in shape after showing up overweight to June minicamp.

"He's a totally different animal right now," said coach Gary Kubiak. Brooks was reportedly "pushing 350" in the spring, but he's trimmed down to 337. Brooks is back on track to give Antoine Caldwell a run to start at right guard.

Texans agreed to terms with third-round OG Brandon Brooks on a four-year, $2.8 million contract.

Houston's 2012 draft class is now signed. Brooks was expected to challenge hard for the Texans' starting right guard job, before reporting to minicamp overweight and out of shape. His weight will always be a concern at 340-plus pounds, particularly in the zone-blocking scheme. Antoine Caldwell will enter camp as the heavy favorite for right guard. Brooks should still get a look.

Texans coach Gary Kubiak was not pleased after rookie OG Brandon Brooks reported to minicamp overweight.

It may kill Brooks' chances of winning the starting right guard job, no matter what happens in training camp. Brooks goes in excess of 340 pounds, so his weight constantly needs to be in control, especially for zone blocking. Antoine Caldwell is the favorite to open the season starting next to C Chris Myers.

The Texans will allow third-round pick Brandon Brooks to push Antoine Caldwell for the starting right guard job.

Brooks has a huge size advantage on Caldwell, and is Houston's right guard of the future. "I think it's going to be very competitive," coach Gary Kubiak said. "He sure looks like he’s in good shape and moving well and he’s 345."

Texans OC Rick Dennison conceded that third-round OG Brandon Brooks will be the biggest offensive lineman he's ever coached.

Dennison is from the zone-blocking school that emphasizes quicker, smaller offensive linemen. Brooks moves well for a big man, but he's a monster at 6-foot-5, 346. I’ve never coached a guy at that size, but we feel that he can do what we do," said Dennison. "He moves around well." Brooks should push Antoine Caldwell hard for the right guard job left vacant by Mike Brisiel's exit.

Texans selected Miami of Ohio OG Brandon Brooks with the No. 76 overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft.

The biggest Combine snub, literally, Brooks carries his 6'5/346 pound frame extremely well. At his pro day, he ran a 4.98 forty and completed 36 bench press reps. Brooks made a name for himself during East-West Shrine week, dominating the competition around him. Because of his size, Brooks comes off the line a bit too high but with his length and strength he lifts the opposition even higher and consistently controlled inferior interior defensive linemen. In pass protection Brooks absorbs powerful pass rusher with his immense upper body.

Miami (OH) OG Brandon Brooks weighed in at 6-foot-5, 346 and bench pressed 225 pounds 36 times at his Pro Day on Thursday.

The biggest snub of the 2012 Combine, Brooks projects as a second-day pick and was an all-star game phenom after dominating in the MAC. At the Pro Day, Brooks showed his athleticism with a 4.98 forty comparable to Cordy Glenn's in Indianapolis. Brooks' 10-yard split was a similarly impressive 1.71, and his 4.52 short shuttle would have beaten every offensive lineman at the Combine.

According to SI.com draft analyst Tony Pauline, Miami (OH) OG Brandon Brooks has been graded as a third-round pick "by a number of teams" despite not receiving a Scouting Combine invite.

Ten teams have already told Brooks they want him in for a pre-draft visit, and he was easily the top-performing offensive lineman at the East-West Shrine Game. A massive guard-only prospect at 6-foot-5, 353, Brooks will appeal to teams that run power blocking systems. The reasons for his Combine snub are unknown, but he did have an undrafted free agent grade before the season.
