Dolphins TE Michael Egnew was running with the starters in Tuesday's OTAs session.
Egnew was even briefly running ahead of Dustin Keller. Coach Joe Philbin said Egnew earned the reps "after a strong offseason." It's a good start for the 2012 third-rounder, but he still has lots of ground to make up coming off a lost rookie season. He's not a threat to Keller's No. 1 status. May 21 - 9:38 PM

Dolphins TE Michael Egnew has taken up mixed martial arts this offseason, and believes it's helped him "learn how to compete."

It's a good thing Egnew is learning how to compete, because he clearly didn't know how to as a rookie. "I expect to play this year," Egnew said. "I’ve gotten stronger. I’m absolutely ready." Just one year removed from being the No. 78 overall pick, Egnew is buried on the depth chart. Dustin Keller is the starter, while fourth-rounder Dion Sims should be the primary blocker. Egnew's camp will be all about saving his roster spot.
May 19 - 10:20 AM

Dolphins coach Joe Philbin says TE Michael Egnew will have to improve his "play speed" to have any chance of getting on the field in 2013.

"Get off the ball quicker, get a better release off the line of scrimmage, get down field quicker," Philbin said. "Just speed it up." Philbin's comments are an indictment of a player GM Jeff Ireland has continued to stand behind. The 2012 third-round pick's roster spot will be very much up in the air heading into training camp.
Mar 19 - 8:38 PM

According to one Dolphins teammate, TE Michael Egnew had trouble remembering the plays in pregame work prior to the Week 17 finale.

Egnew had playbook memory problems in October, but to hear he was having the same troubles through the end of the season doesn't bode well for his future. GM Jeff Ireland continues to give the 2012 third-rounder votes of confidence. "That’s a position that develops differently," said Ireland. "Other than quarterback, that position is the most mentally and physically demanding."
Feb 21 - 10:55 PM

Dolphins GM Jeff Ireland gave TE Michael Egnew a vote of confidence on Tuesday.

"I have a high regard for him. He’s gonna have a good season this year, I feel real confident about it," said Ireland. Of course he feels that way after blowing a third-round pick on the tight end. Egnew was anonymously blasted by his teammates after the season. One player called him a "p***y," while another said he "should have been cut." Egnew was the No. 78 overall selection in the 2012 draft and appeared in just two games, catching zero passes. He'll be squarely on the roster bubble this summer.
Jan 22 - 2:16 PM

The Miami Herald considers it unlikely that Dolphins TE Michael Egnew will be on the roster come Week 1 of the 2013 season.

Egnew is getting blasted anonymously by his peers. "He should have been cut this year," one player told the Herald. "He's not a football player," said another. Egnew was famously ripped to shreds by OC Mike Sherman during Hard Knocks and was then inactive for the first 14 games of the season. He'll have to show well during the offseason program and camp to stick for a second season.
Jan 9 - 11:17 AM

According to the Miami Herald, the Dolphins still don't believe third-round rookie TE Michael Egnew is ready to contribute.

The No. 78 pick in April's draft, Egnew has yet to be active this season. It's unusual for an early-round pick, especially since the Dolphins are rebuilding their passing attack from the ground up. Egnew's NFL future isn't looking bright at the moment. The Herald's Barry Jackson believes the Dolphins will likely look to acquire another tight end in the offseason.

Dolphins declared TE Michael Egnew, QB Pat Devlin, CB Jimmy Wilson, CB Michael Coe, LB Josh Kaddu, OT Patrick Brown, and TE Kyle Miller inactive for Week 14 against the Dolphins.

Egnew hasn't been active all year. He was a top-80 pick in April's draft. Wilson is probably the most notable inactive here, as he's been covering the slot on nickel downs in recent weeks. Miami is thin in the secondary Sunday.

One Dolphins player told the Miami Herald that Dolphins rookie third-round TE Mike Egnew has "trouble remembering the plays," hence his lack of playing time.

Another player was "skeptical about (Egnew's) long-term chances." Egnew is buried on the depth chart in Miami, behind Anthony Fasano and Charles Clay, and there are no signs that the coaching staff wants to increase his role.

Dolphins declared TE Michael Egnew, QB Pat Devlin, RB Daniel Thomas, RT Will Yeatman, OT Ray Feinga, DT Tony McDaniel, and WR Anthony Armstrong inactive for Week 2 against the Raiders.

Thomas (concussion) has yet to receive clearance to return to practice. Lamar Miller will serve as Reggie Bush's primary backup. Egnew is inactive for the second time this season. Armstrong was claimed off waivers from the Redskins earlier this month.

According to the Miami Herald, Dolphins third-round TE Michael Egnew has been "terrible" in training camp.

The Herald's Armando Salguero isn't pulling punches. The 78th overall pick in the draft, Egnew was also told by OC Mike Sherman on Hard Knocks that he'd be "cut today" if Sherman were the Dolphins' general manager. Egnew may make the team because of his draft status, but he won't help Miami this season.

Tuesday's episode of Hard Knocks revealed that Dolphins third-round TE Michael Egnew has been in the coaching staff's doghouse for inconsistent effort and not knowing the playbook.

Coordinator Mike Sherman directed a tirade at Egnew in a team meeting. "Egnew, you were terrible. I would cut you today if I were the GM," yelled Sherman. "Get your head out of your ass. You're drafted as a high pick, get your s*** going. It's not good enough." Egnew's pedigree may save his roster spot, but there is a string of game-day inactives in his future this year.

Dolphins third-round TE Michael Egnew has reportedly struggled to get open so far in training camp practices.

Per columnist/reporter Armando Salguero, Egnew is "just ... there" and has been "unimpressive in camp," struggling to separate and not flashing enough. The Fins will likely end up relying on Anthony Fasano and H-back Charles Clay as their top two tight ends, while hoping that Egnew "develops" in year one.

Dolphins signed third-round TE Michael Egnew to a four-year contract.

Eight rookie picks remain unsigned around the NFL. Egnew, the 78th selection out of Missouri, will likely need to show he can block to get on the football field as a rookie. Past Mizzou tight ends such as Martin Rucker and Chase Coffman have struggled with that coming out of Gary Pinkel's spread offense.

The Palm Beach Post expects Dolphins' third-round pick TE Michael Egnew to be a "significant" contributor.

Beat writer Ben Volin believes Egnew could be an "immediate threat" in the red zone. A pure pass-catcher with above-average size (6-5, 252) and athleticism, Egnew is working "feverishly" on his blocking and "playing with his hand in the dirt." With Anthony Fasano and Charles Clay still in the mix, we're skeptical Egnew will out-shine recent Missouri TEs Chase Coffman and Martin Rucker and be a meaningful contributor as a rookie.
