Dolphins OC Bill Lazor is using third-year TE Michael Egnew out wide and off the line more than ex-OC Mike Sherman.
Egnew has played just 255 snaps since being the 78th overall pick in the 2012 draft, and he was asked to block on half of them. Egnew was more receiver than tight end in Mizzou's spread offense in college. Getting him out in the slot and away from linemen and linebackers is the best idea. Egnew is competing for a roster spot this summer. Lazor at least seems to know his players' strengths. May 30 - 10:27 AM

The Miami Herald expects third-year TE Michael Egnew to be on the roster bubble in training camp.

Reporter Barry Jackson anticipates the Fins adding "at least two tight ends" to push for Egnew's job. The 78th overall pick in the 2012 draft, Egnew has seven catches through two NFL seasons, and has predictably struggled mightily as a run blocker. He's also off scholarship under Miami's new general manager.

Coach Joe Philbin says second-year TE Michael Egnew "really improved an awful lot" this summer.

Egnew had nowhere to go but up. So while it's nice to hear he's getting better, he really didn't have much of a choice. "He's a guy we're excited about," continued Philbin. Egnew is no higher than the No. 4 tight end on the depth chart, and he's going to struggle to find playing time this season.

Dolphins OC Mike Sherman said second-year TE Michael Egnew has made "drastic improvement from a year ago."

"He’s a lot more physical," Sherman said. "His blocking has really improved. Still has to show more consistency. His peaks and valleys aren’t quite as [dramatic]." Egnew is still far too inconsistent, and he's no higher than the No. 4 tight end on the depth chart. He also had a drop in the Hall of Fame Game.

Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald does not expect TE Michael Egnew to make the Dolphins' final roster.

The much maligned Egnew is already off to a rough start at training camp. He opened up with the third- and fourth-stringers and fumbled on Tuesday. The Dolphins may end up just cutting their losses on the 2012 third-rounder; they're already giving rookie Dion Sims a few reps with the starters.

Dolphins 2012 third-round pick Michael Egnew opened training camp with the third- and fourth-team offenses.

"So much for him having a great offseason," quipped Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald. Egnew has apparently already been passed on the depth chart by fourth-round rookie Dion Sims. He's also behind Dustin Keller and Charles Clay.

After a solid beginning to spring practices, Dolphins TE Michael Egnew reportedly "faded" late in the offseason program.

Egnew's blocking "remains questionable," and he's not considered likely to open the season as one of Miami's top three tight ends. One of GM Jeff Ireland's biggest draft blunders -- and Ireland has had many -- Egnew is squarely on the roster bubble just 15 months removed from being a top-80 overall pick.

The Miami Herald reports there's "continued skepticism" among Michael Egnew's Dolphins teammates that he's ready to take a step forward this season.

We heard a few good things about Egnew during OTAs, but always a top-notch athlete, it's not surprising he looked good without pads on. It's his toughness and football IQ that have to improve. We're not holding our breath.

Dolphins TE Michael Egnew was running with the starters in Tuesday's OTAs session.

Egnew was even briefly running ahead of Dustin Keller. Coach Joe Philbin said Egnew earned the reps "after a strong offseason." It's a good start for the 2012 third-rounder, but he still has lots of ground to make up coming off a lost rookie season. He's not a threat to Keller's No. 1 status.

Dolphins TE Michael Egnew has taken up mixed martial arts this offseason, and believes it's helped him "learn how to compete."

It's a good thing Egnew is learning how to compete, because he clearly didn't know how to as a rookie. "I expect to play this year," Egnew said. "I’ve gotten stronger. I’m absolutely ready." Just one year removed from being the No. 78 overall pick, Egnew is buried on the depth chart. Dustin Keller is the starter, while fourth-rounder Dion Sims should be the primary blocker. Egnew's camp will be all about saving his roster spot.
Sun, May 19, 2013 10:20:00 AM

Dolphins coach Joe Philbin says TE Michael Egnew will have to improve his "play speed" to have any chance of getting on the field in 2013.

"Get off the ball quicker, get a better release off the line of scrimmage, get down field quicker," Philbin said. "Just speed it up." Philbin's comments are an indictment of a player GM Jeff Ireland has continued to stand behind. The 2012 third-round pick's roster spot will be very much up in the air heading into training camp.

According to one Dolphins teammate, TE Michael Egnew had trouble remembering the plays in pregame work prior to the Week 17 finale.

Egnew had playbook memory problems in October, but to hear he was having the same troubles through the end of the season doesn't bode well for his future. GM Jeff Ireland continues to give the 2012 third-rounder votes of confidence. "That’s a position that develops differently," said Ireland. "Other than quarterback, that position is the most mentally and physically demanding."

Dolphins GM Jeff Ireland gave TE Michael Egnew a vote of confidence on Tuesday.

"I have a high regard for him. He’s gonna have a good season this year, I feel real confident about it," said Ireland. Of course he feels that way after blowing a third-round pick on the tight end. Egnew was anonymously blasted by his teammates after the season. One player called him a "p***y," while another said he "should have been cut." Egnew was the No. 78 overall selection in the 2012 draft and appeared in just two games, catching zero passes. He'll be squarely on the roster bubble this summer.

The Miami Herald considers it unlikely that Dolphins TE Michael Egnew will be on the roster come Week 1 of the 2013 season.

Egnew is getting blasted anonymously by his peers. "He should have been cut this year," one player told the Herald. "He's not a football player," said another. Egnew was famously ripped to shreds by OC Mike Sherman during Hard Knocks and was then inactive for the first 14 games of the season. He'll have to show well during the offseason program and camp to stick for a second season.

According to the Miami Herald, the Dolphins still don't believe third-round rookie TE Michael Egnew is ready to contribute.

The No. 78 pick in April's draft, Egnew has yet to be active this season. It's unusual for an early-round pick, especially since the Dolphins are rebuilding their passing attack from the ground up. Egnew's NFL future isn't looking bright at the moment. The Herald's Barry Jackson believes the Dolphins will likely look to acquire another tight end in the offseason.
