Titans WLB Zach Brown is recovering from offseason shoulder surgery, but is expected to be ready for training camp.
Brown has been limited to individual drills in OTAs. A 2012 second-rounder, Brown started 14 games as a rookie, but was only serviceable in coverage while struggling against the run. He's locked into a starting role, but the Titans will be looking for him to take a step forward as a sophomore. May 28 - 8:22 PM

Titans second-round pick Zach Brown has been working at weak-side linebacker during OTAs.

Brown saw some first-team action on Thursday, but only because starter Will Witherspoon was excused. Titans coaches have been impressed with Brown's speed and ability to pick up the playbook, but he figures to take on a situational role during his rookie season. Gerald McRath is also in the mix for weak-side reps.

Titans agreed to terms with No. 52 pick LB Zach Brown on a four-year, $3.858 million contract.

Brown is perhaps the most athletic linebacker in this year's draft class, but has a reputation as an "avoid contact" player. A rangy 6-foot-1, 244 pounds to go along with 33 1/4-inch arms, Brown will compete with Will Witherspoon and Gerald McRath for a starting job at outside linebacker, but could be limited to passing downs as a rookie.

NFL Network draft analyst Mike Mayock describes Titans second-round LB Zach Brown as player who is "somewhat allergic to contact."

Rotoworld's Josh Norris has nicknamed Brown "pillow hands," and NFL Films' Greg Cosell deemed him an "avoid-contact player." Brown runs like the wind, but he may max out as no better than a nickel 'backer, specializing in coverage. In training camp, Brown will battle Will Witherspoon and Gerald McRath to start.

Titans selected UNC LB Zach Brown with the No. 52 overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft.

An elite natural talent who broke the UNC indoor track 60 meter school record with a time of 6.72 seconds, Brown plays football more like an athlete than a linebacker. He excels in coverage, with plenty of speed and size to stay with tight ends downfield. However, Brown lacks aggression and reaction quickness to decipher the play in front of him with the expected toughness of a linebacker. Rotoworld Draft analyst Josh Norris has even gone so far to give Brown the nickname of "Pillow Hands". He will initially help as a sub-package coverage linebacker.

After doing tape study of North Carolina LB Zach Brown, NFL Films guru Greg Cosell described Brown as an "avoid-contact player."

Cosell did credit Brown with "sideline-to-sideline range," impressive speed, and movement skills. But Cosell saw "no physicality" out of Brown, and prefers Nebraska's Lavonte David as a 4-3 outside linebacker prospect. Cosell says David showed more "physical toughness," and is a "quicker reactor" than Brown. It sounds like Brown is a candidate to be overdrafted.

According to NFL.com's Gil Brandt, some league personnel question North Carolina LB Zach Brown's competitiveness.

It's not the first time we've heard this. Brown is a terrific workout athlete -- he ran 4.48, 4.49 at 6'1/242 during the Tar Heels' Pro Day -- but he lacks toughness in pads and isn't a sure tackler. CBS Sports' Rob Rang has also questioned Brown's instincts. Brown may be selected in the top 45 for his athleticism, but he's not a run-stopping outside linebacker prospect.

According to CBS Sports' Rob Rang, multiple NFL scouts have compared North Carolina LB Zach Brown's instincts as a linebacker to Aaron Curry's.

"That's no compliment," warns Rang. Brown runs 4.50 at 6-foot-1, 244, and possesses 33 1/4-inch arms to excel in pass coverage. Rang considers Brown a potential workout wonder, though. "(Brown) is a passive 'chase' linebacker who consistently runs around blocks rather than fighting through them," writes Rang. Rotoworld draft analyst Josh Norris has also questioned Brown's toughness.
