Larry Donnell says he had a broken bone in his neck last year, and that the injury was "worse than I thought."

Donnell has since recovered, returning to the Giants on a $1.67 million restricted free agent tender. Donnell is a red zone threat, but the G-Men may have discovered a higher-upside option in Will Tye. It's hard to see Donnell having fantasy relevance in 2016.

Giants re-signed TE Larry Donnell.

He'll earn $1.67 million under the original round tender. Donnell enjoyed a brief moment of fantasy relevance in 2014 (63 catches, 623 yards, six touchdowns) but then missed half of last season with a neck injury. This year he'll compete with Will Tye for the starting job at tight end.

Giants restricted free agent TE Larry Donnell has received clearance from his season-ending neck injury.

The G-Men probably wouldn't have tendered Donnell had he failed to receive clearance. The original-round tender Donnell received is worth $1.67 million. Once he signs the tender, Donnell will compete with impressive Will Tye for the Giants' starting tight end job. Tye is a higher-upside prospect.

Giants tendered restricted free agent TE Larry Donnell at the original-round level.

It's worth $1.67 million. Since Donnell entered the league as an undrafted free agent, the G-Men would receive no compensation were he to sign elsewhere and they decided not to match. With Donnell recovering from a serious neck injury, that's not going to happen. Heath permitting, he'll be back in New York City, and battling with Will Tye for top pass-catching duties.
Mar 3 - 1:26 PM

Giants TE Larry Donnell (neck) has yet to be cleared.

GM Jerry Reese is optimistic Donnell's career will continue, but hedged on guaranteeing it. "We’re expecting him to be back, but necks can be tricky, so we’ll have to wait and see where that goes," Reese said. "Hopefully he can get healthy and come back and continue his career." Donnell is a restricted free agent. His health will be paramount in whether or not he's tendered an offer.

Giants coach Tom Coughlin said there is optimism Larry Donnell's neck issue in not a long-term problem.

Donnell was placed on injured reserve Tuesday and has not played since Week 8. Donnell was able to practice several weeks ago, but he was shut down after an MRI revealed more damage than expected in his neck. It is not a given Donnell is ready for the offseason program.

Giants placed TE Larry Donnell on injured reserve with a neck injury, ending his season.

Donnell had been sidelined since Week 9. With Will Tye playing well in his absence, the Giants decided to stop waiting around. Donnell has made a few nice plays the past two seasons, but is a replacement-level player. An impending exclusive rights free agent, Donnell should be back with the G-Men for next summer's training camp, but won't be guaranteed to make the 53-man roster.

Giants declared TE Larry Donnell, OT Emmett Cleary, WR Geremy Davis, OLB Devon Kennard, SS Brandon Meriweather, OT Marshall Newhouse and DE George Selvie inactive for Week 13 against the Jets.

Donnell (neck) hasn't seen the field since Week 8 and it wouldn't be a shock if he missed the rest of the season. Robert Ayers (toe), Justin Pugh (concussion) and Weston Richburg (ankle) are active.

Larry Donnell (neck) has been ruled out for Week 13.

Will Tye will draw another start after turning in his season-best game (6-74-0) in last Sunday's loss to Washington. Donnell has no known timetable for return and could very well miss the remainder of the season.

In the medical field, positive is a bad thing. "Obviously something is wrong," Donnell said. There's a report Donnell may have a fracture in his neck. It sounds like he could be done for the season. In Donnell's absence, Will Tye will continue to handle tight end duties. Jerome Cunningham is the backup.

Larry Donnell (neck) is not practicing Wednesday.

Donnell said he's been cleared to play and feels 100 percent. The Giants obviously feel differently. Either way, if he plays, Donnell isn't fantasy-relevant.

Larry Donnell (neck) said he has been cleared to play and feels 100 percent.

Donnell took part in practice Monday and should play this week. Donnell was nothing but a touchdown-or-bust tight end before the injury, and he may lose snaps to Will Tye. He does not need to be owned.
