Giants signed FB Will Johnson to a two-year contract.
The G-Men tried to make something out of nothing at fullback last season, using converted DL Nikita Whitlock for over 100 snaps in the role. Johnson only logged 90 downs for the Steelers, but earned positive Pro Football Focus grades for his run blocking and can carry the ball in a pinch. Mon, Apr 4, 2016 04:32:00 PM

Free agent FB Will Johnson has already had conversations with the Bears, Chargers, Jets and Titans.

At certain points last season, the Steelers were so banged up that Johnson was actually employed as a backup running back, though he only logged six touches. He's been a useful blocker throughout his career and should find a new home in relatively short order.

Will Johnson will back up DeAngelo Williams at running back Thursday against the Patriots.

Johnson is really more of an H-back than a conventional ball carrier but with Le'Veon Ball serving a two-game suspension, the Steelers have to think outside the box. The 32-year-old Williams is in rapid decline while pint-sized Dri Archer would probably break in half if the Steelers asked him to be anything more than a change-of-pace back. Pittsburgh's patchwork backfield will force Ben Roethlisberger to throw it early and often on Thursday night.

Will Johnson will work with the running backs this week in preparation for Thursday's game against the Patriots.

With Le'Veon Bell suspended, the Steelers have just two running backs on their active roster. One is 32-year-old DeAngelo Williams; the other is pint-sized return man Dri Archer. Johnson was used exclusively at tight end during the preseason, though he does have experience at fullback. Ben Roethlisberger joked that Pittsburgh might go with an empty backfield this week. He might not be far off.

Steelers re-signed restricted free agent FB Will Johnson to a one-year, $1.542 million contract.

Johnson played 221 snaps as Le'Veon Bell's lead blocker last season, grading out as Pro Football Focus' No. 11 fullback. He also has 29 catches in three years.

Steelers signed FB Will Johnson.

After using up his college eligibility in 2011, Johnson worked three jobs for the opportunity to impress scouts at West Virginia's Pro Day last week. The Steelers came away impressed after he blazed a 4.40 forty at 6'2/240 while leading all volunteers with 30 reps on the bench press.
