Redskins activated TE Derek Carrier (knee) from the PUP.
Carrier opened the season on the PUP after tearing his ACL and MCL last December. He just began practicing Monday, but he is apparently ready to play. Niles Paul landed on injured reserve with a shoulder injury this week, so the Redskins need some help at tight end. Nov 12 - 1:55 PM

Date:

Redskins TE Derek Carrier (knee, PUP) returned to practice Monday.

The session starts his 21-day window to be activated. With Jordan Reed healthy and Vernon Davis playing well, Washington might wait until near the end of that window to activate Carrier.
Nov 7 - 12:26 PM

Redskins TE Derek Carrier (knee) is expected to practice this week.

Carrier is also eligible to come off the PUP list this week. He needed some extra time to recover from a torn ACL. Even with Jordan Reed sidelined by a concussion, Carrier is unlikely to play a big role. The Redskins also have Vernon Davis and Niles Paul to fill the void at tight end.
Oct 17 - 3:40 PM

Redskins placed TE Derek Carrier (knee) on the reserve/PUP list.

A depth piece, Carrier tore his ACL and MCL last December. He'll be first eligible to return in Week 7.
Aug 30 - 5:05 PM

Redskins TE Derek Carrier (knee) could open the season on reserve/PUP.

Carrier is seven months removed from tearing his ACL. He isn't going to be rushed back with Niles Paul and Logan Paulsen returning. Carrier will compete for a backup role when healthy.
Jul 22 - 7:15 PM

Redskins TE Derek Carrier (knee) isn't expected to be ready for the start of training camp.

Carrier tore his ACL and MCL in Week 14 last season and remains in question for the start of the season. It's possible he opens the year on reserve/PUP.
Jun 15 - 2:08 PM

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports Derek Carrier tore his ACL and MCL Week 14 against the Bears.

He is done for the year. Acquired from the 49ers for a fifth-round pick in late August, Carrier caught 17 passes for 141 yards and a touchdown in 12 games. The athletic backup is owed an affordable $925,000 in salary and bonuses next season.

Redskins TE Derek Carrier left Sunday's Week 14 game against the Bears with a right knee injury.

He was carted off. The Redskins announced Carrier as "questionable" initially, then quickly revised his status as "out." Jordan Reed is Washington's only active tight end left with Je'Ron Hamm on the inactives list.

Redskins TE Derek Carrier (ankle) is probable for Week 14 against the Bears.

Carrier only ended up missing one game with ankle and Achilles' issues. He will return as a seldom-used backup to Jordan Reed.

Redskins TE Derek Carrier is day to day with an ankle/Achilles' sprain.

The "day to day" tag suggests the reserve tight end will avoid injured reserve.
Mon, Nov 30, 2015 03:05:00 PM

Derek Carrier exited Week 12 against the Giants with an ankle injury.

Carrier limped off after making a catch on the Redskins' first drive. He is questionable to return.
Sun, Nov 29, 2015 01:24:00 PM

Derek Carrier caught 4-of-4 targets for 39 yards in the Redskins' Week 6 loss to the Jets.

Replacing Jordan Reed the past two weeks, Carrier has seen target totals of 2 and 4, catching all but one of them. Carrier's efficiency has been impressive, but he still doesn't seem to be early in Kirk Cousins' progression reads. He'll stay on the low-end TE1 streamer radar in Week 7 against the Bucs.

Derek Carrier secured 2-of-3 targets for 27 yards and a touchdown in the Redskins' Week 5 loss to the Falcons.

Carrier was targeted once more by Kirk Cousins on a two-point-conversion try, but the pass was broken up. Carrier's seven-yard touchdown catch ensured he'd pay off for tight end streamers, but he was Cousins' third or fourth read on that play, and ultimately not a huge part of Washington's passing game. Cousins will remain a low-end streamer option when the Redskins face the Jets in Week 6.

The Redskins listed Derek Carrier as their No. 2 tight end on their unofficial depth chart.

Acquired from San Francisco just four days ago, Carrier's placement on the depth chart could be a testament to how highly the Redskins view the 25-year-old tight end. If he can pick up the offensive system quickly, it is not out of the question Carrier pushes Jordan Reed (hamstring) for snaps.
Tue, Aug 25, 2015 01:37:00 PM

Redskins acquired TE Derek Carrier from the 49ers for a conditional 2017 fifth-round pick.

The "conditions" are related to playing time and stats. Carrier just turned 25 years old and has absurd measurables, running 4.49 with a 40-inch vertical at 6-foot-3, 240 coming out of Beloit College in 2012. He probably should've played over both Vance McDonald and Vernon Davis last year, but wound up handling under 200 snaps. Carrier is a converted wide receiver who earned positive run and pass blocking grades from PFF in 2014. He gives Washington a No. 2 tight end following Niles Paul and Logan Paulsen's year-ending injuries. We wouldn't totally rule out the possibility of Carrier pushing always-injured Jordan Reed once he picks up Jay Gruden's system.
