Seahawks rookie MLB Bobby Wagner needs 36 tackles over the final four games to break Terry Beeson's 1977 single-season franchise record.
Wagner has averaged 9.4 tackles, posting double-digit totals in four of his past seven games since becoming an every-down player. "He's a first-year guy, but he acts and plays like a fourth-year guy," said LBs coach Ken Norton. "He sees the field well, and he has really good instincts." Norton also credits Wagner with better speed and athleticism than former Seahawks MLB Lofa Tatupu. Fri, Dec 7, 2012 02:02:00 PM

Second-round MLB Bobby Wagner has been handling the defensive play-calling in this week's minicamp.

Strong-side LB K.J. Wright, who handled play-calling duties last season, expects Wagner to keep the responsibility into the season. With veteran Barrett Ruud recovering from groin, knee, and shoulder injuries, Wagner appears to have seized the reins in the middle.

Second-round pick Bobby Wagner is working with Seattle's first-team defense at middle linebacker during full-squad OTAs.

Barrett Ruud is out with injury, but this is a big opportunity for the 47th overall pick to shine. Wagner has been flanked by SLB K.J. Wright and WLB Leroy Hill. Assuming Wagner does open the season as a starter, it will be interesting to see whether he earns a role in the nickel package. The Seahawks used outgoing MLB David Hawthorne as a nearly every-down linebacker.

Seahawks coach Pete Carroll confirms No. 47 pick LB Bobby Wagner has a "heck of a chance" to start at middle linebacker.

"The (MLB) spot is wide open and we have to see what happens," Carroll said. "We'd love to get that speed on the field if we could." Wagner is a hard-hitter with exceptional athleticism, but his instincts were questioned in the run up to the draft. He focused exclusively on middle linebacker in Seattle's rookie camp, however. Where Wagner lines up as a rookie could depend on the health of veteran MLB Barrett Ruud.

Seahawks second-round LB Bobby Wagner has focused exclusively on middle linebacker in rookie camp.

Wagner started all four years at Utah State, playing on both the inside and outside. It appears he'll be in the mix to start in the middle as a rookie, especially with his main competition, Barrett Ruud, still recovering from several injuries. A hard hitter with good speed, Wagner needs to prove he has the instincts to quarterback the defense from day one.

Seahawks selected Utah State LB Bobby Wagner with the No. 47 overall pick in the 2012 draft.

A four-year starter at both inside and outside linebacker, Wagner led his school in tackles in each of the past three seasons. Drawing comparisons to former Steelers LB Kendrell Bell, Wagner also impressed at the Combine with a blazing forty in addition to the top vertical (39.5") and long jump (11'0") scores. Although he's a hard hitter, Wagner' instincts have been questioned by multiple scouts and analysts. He's likely ticketed for the weak side in Seattle.
