Raiders CB Lito Sheppard will start opposite Stanford Routt in Thursday's game against the Chargers.
Regulars Chris Johnson (hamstring) and DeMarcus Van Dyke (hamstring) are both out. That leaves Sheppard, who has been highly ineffective ever since leaving the Eagles and is in his second game as a Raider. Both passing offenses have plus matchups tonight. Thu, Nov 10, 2011 11:01:00 AM

Raiders re-signed CB Lito Sheppard.

Sheppard was among the Raiders' final cuts in September. His tank running on close to empty at age 30, Sheppard's addition could signal concern about Chris Johnson's (hamstring) status going forward. Rookie Demarcus Van Dyke has taken over as the Raiders' right corner and figures to keep the job.

The Bengals worked out free agent CBs Lito Sheppard and Trevard Lindley on Tuesday.

The Bengals also worked out free agent TE Donald Lee. Cincinnati is thin in its secondary with Kelly Jennings battling a hamstring injury and Pacman Jones (neck) on the PUP list, so it's a good bet one of Sheppard or Lindley will be signed on Wednesday.

Raiders released CB Lito Sheppard.

Sheppard was signed as insurance for LCB Chris Johnson eight days ago, but Johnson was able to return to practice on Tuesday. Sheppard has started just 12 games since the end of the 2007 season, and was highly ineffective when on the field for the Vikings last year.

Raiders signed CB Lito Sheppard, formerly of the Vikings.

With starting left cornerback Chris Johnson (undisclosed surgery) still sidelined, the Raiders are looking for depth. Sheppard was brutal in Minnesota last season and predictably drew scant interest on the open market. He does add starting experience to a team that has youngsters Demarcus Van Dyke, Jeremy Ware, and Walter McFadden looking at significant roles.

Free agent CB Lito Sheppard is expected to work out for the Giants this week.

Injuries have left Michael Coe, on the practice squad for most of 2010, as the third cornerback in New York. The Giants are reportedly only offering a split contract for the veteran minimum, which has kept players such as former Colts CB Kelvin Hayden from auditioning.

The Vikings are not expected to re-sign free agent CB Lito Sheppard this offseason.

Tom Pelissero of ESPN Twin Cities gave Sheppard a "D" grade for his 2010 season, noting he allowed five TDs on 248 snaps and missed six tackles. Pelissero says Sheppard has "clearly lost a step." He turns 30 in April.

Lito Sheppard and Asher Allen are getting first-team reps at right corner with Cedric Griffin (active/PUP, torn ACL) out.

Griffin's status for Week 1 remains in major doubt as he admitted Saturday that there is no timetable for his return. Sheppard is the likely starter, but is unlikely to find the Pro Bowl form from a few years back in Philadelphia. He'll be targeted by opponent's game plans.

Lito Sheppard will not play on the inside this season.

Sheppard is exclusively practicing at right and left corner. Cedric Griffin (ACL tear) is a long shot to be ready for Week 1, so Sheppard is the likely starter. Asher Allen and Benny Sapp will be the primary inside nickel corners.

Lito Sheppard has an excellent chance to start at right corner in Week 1, according to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune.

Normal starter Cedric Griffin is recovering from an ACL tear and appears unlikely to be ready for opening day. Sheppard, 29, is declining badly but will only have to beat out Benny Sapp, rookie Chris Cook and Asher Allen for the job. It's a problem area for the Vikings.

Vikings signed CB Lito Sheppard to a one-year, $2 million contract.

Sheppard, 29, finished last season with 31 tackles, one interception, and eight pass breakups. While he fills a need should be an upgrade in dime sets over Karl Paymah, Sheppard is highly injury prone and inconsistent in coverage. The Vikings will be in trouble if he's forced to make spot starts.

The Vikings are hosting free agent CB Lito Sheppard on Wednesday.

Sheppard recently visited the Lions, but left without a deal. It's odd that he's being considered by teams that run such different schemes in the back end. The Vikings heavily employ Tampa-2 coverages, while Detroit plays press.

The Vikings are reportedly "giving serious consideration" to signing free agent CB Lito Sheppard.

Sheppard has made one free agent visit, but he left Detroit last week without signing. The Vikes could use insurance with both starters coming off of surgery this offseason, but they'll likely wait to pull the trigger on Sheppard until after the draft.

In addition to the Lions, free agent Lito Sheppard is expected to be on the radar of the Vikings, Bears, and Raiders.

Sheppard is making just his first visit of the free agent season, so this could be just an effort by his agent to drum up interest. The Vikes could use veteran depth at corner, but they've obviously been in no hurry to add Sheppard.

Lito Sheppard will visit the Lions on Wednesday and Thursday, a league source tells Mike Florio of Profootballtalk.com.

Sheppard, 29, has a bigger name than he is worth at this point in his career. He is extremely injury prone, a poor tackler, often blows coverages and was benched by the Jets last season. The Lions should be aiming higher to fix their secondary woes.
