Falcons placed RT Lamar Holmes on injured reserve with a foot injury, ending his season.
With C Joe Hawley (knee) also headed to injured reserve, the Falcons have promoted OG Harland Gunn and S Sean Baker from the practice squad. Forced into 19 starts over the past two seasons, Holmes has been a swinging gate on Matt Ryan's right side, but his loss leaves the Falcons with serious depth issues along the offensive line. Free agent signee Cameron Bradfield could take Holmes' place in the starting lineup, though Gabe Carimi is the most likely candidate. 25 years old, Holmes is heading into the final year of his rookie contract. Although he's due just $660,000, there's no guarantee he'll be back. Sep 30 - 2:19 PM

Falcons OT Lamar Holmes projects as a backup this season.

The Falcons spent last offseason talking up Holmes as a potential Pro Bowler at right tackle. He ended up benched at times and finished 75th among 76 qualifying tackles in PFF's grades. The Falcons desperately need to draft offensive line help as they try to rehab their running game and keep Matt Ryan upright. Ryan was sacked 44 times last season, tied for third-most in the league.

Falcons RT Lamar Holmes was benched in favor of Jeremy Trueblood in Sunday's Week 4 loss to the Patriots.

Holmes was one of the league's worst tackles through the first three weeks, giving up 15 quarterback hurries. He ended up playing the vast majority of Sunday night's loss anyway because LT Sam Baker sustained a knee injury in the second quarter. The Falcons' offensive line is in shambles.

Lamar Holmes has won the Falcons' starting right tackle job.

Holmes was competing with UDFA Ryan Schraeder for the spot. Schraeder will be the swing tackle, while Holmes, last year's third-round pick, will fill the shoes of Mike Johnson, who was lost for the season due to a broken leg and dislocated ankle. Out of 157 tackles graded by Pro Football Focus this preseason, Holmes was the fourth-worst. He was especially poor as a run blocker.

Updating a previous item, 2012 third-round pick Lamar Holmes is expected to open training camp as a backup.

The first-team line will be, from left to right, LT Sam Baker, LG Justin Blalock, C Peter Konz, RG Garrett Reynolds, and RT Mike Johnson. Holmes was initially viewed as Tyson Clabo's heir apparent, but may not have had a standout spring. Johnson offers more experience, though he's largely struggled in past spot appearances. The O-Line is not a strength of Atlanta's offense.

The Falcons' official website confirms Lamar Holmes is penciled in as the new starting right tackle.

A 6'6/323 second-year player out of Southern Miss, Holmes saw just seven snaps as a rookie. But the Falcons are apparently comfortable enough with him to release long-time starting right tackle Tyson Clabo. Holmes' only competition will come from jumbo tight end Mike Johnson and a possible draft pick. The Falcons will be breaking in a new center and right tackle this season.

Falcons OT Lamar Holmes (toe) and SLB Stephen Nicholas (knee) have been cleared for training camp.

Holmes, a third-round rookie, missed offseason practices with fractured toes in his left foot. Nicholas hadn't practiced since December, missing the playoff loss to the Giants.

Falcons third-round OT Lamar Holmes (toe) will be held out until the start of training camp.

Holmes is walking without a boot already, so this sounds like a precaution. The No. 91 overall pick projects as a swing tackle for the Falcons.

Falcons signed No. 91 overall pick OT Lamar Holmes to a four-year contract.

A first team All-Conference USA selection, Holmes led an offensive line that paved the way for Southern Miss to post more than 6,000 yards of offense for the first time in school history. At 6'6" and 325 pounds, he possesses the size and athleticism to stay at left tackle in the NFL. Holmes will likely play a swing tackle role as a rookie.

Falcons third-round OT Lamar Holmes is missing rookie minicamp with fractured toes in his left foot.

The Falcons weren't aware of the injury when they drafted Holmes. "It’s something that became evident in his post-draft physical," coach Mike Smith conceded. Smith claims that the toe(s) injury is "minor," and Holmes' absence from workouts is "precautionary." Holmes' status for full-squad OTAs is unknown.

Falcons selected Southern Miss OT Lamar Holmes with the No. 91 overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft.

Offering ideal size at nearly 6-foot-6 and 325 pounds, Holmes caught the eye of NFL Network's Mike Mayock at the East-West Shrine game. Although Holmes plays with a bit of stiffness, he was a solid pass protector and a strong run blocker as an all-conference selection in 2011. The Falcons may view him as a developmental left tackle.
