Titans signed G/C Joe Looney.
An ex-49er, Looney appeared in 15 games last season, but made only four starts. He provides insurance for the Titans at center following the loss of Brian Schwenke (leg). Sixth-round rookie Andy Gallik will get the first crack at starting duties. Tue, Oct 20, 2015 02:50:00 PM

49ers activated fourth-round OG Joe Looney (Lisfranc fracture) from the active/non-football injury list.

After missing offseason practices, Looney has fallen behind Alex Boone, Daniel Kilgore and newly signed veteran Leonard Davis in the battle for the right guard job. The Wake Forest rookie may have to wait for 2013 for a fair shake at playing time.

49ers rookie OG Joe Looney (Lisfranc fracture) opened training camp on the active/non-football injury list.

Looney suffered the injury at the Senior Bowl in January, and it's possible that he'll open the season on NFI, costing him the first six regular season games. Looney was the Niners' fourth-round pick in April. Alex Boone is locked in as the Niners' starting right guard, so Looney would return strictly as a reserve.

49ers rookie OG Joe Looney (foot) has not yet been cleared for practice.

Looney will not participate in this weekend's minicamp. He's still recovering after sustaining a Lisfranc fracture at the Senior Bowl. Looney is expected to compete with Alex Boone and Daniel Kilgore for the starting right guard job.

49ers fourth-round pick Joe Looney is expected to start at right guard.

"We believe he'll be a starter for us," coach Jim Harbaugh said. The 49ers surrendered a sixth-round pick to trade up eight spots for Looney, a left guard at Wake Forest. A decent run blocker, he'll have the edge over Daniel Kilgore as long as he can hold his own in pass protection.

49ers traded up with the Lions to select Wake Forest G Joe Looney with the No. 117 overall pick in the 2012 draft.

San Francisco surrendered the No. 125 and No. 196 picks. Looney fills a need for the Niners, and should compete with Daniel Kilgore to be the starting right guard in training camp. Looney played mostly left guard at Wake Forest, but moves well for his size (6-foot-3, 309), and should hold his own in run blocking as a rookie. He needs to improve as a pass blocker, however.
