Keshawn Martin and DeVier Posey could be competing for one roster spot.
The competition for jobs behind Andre Johnson and DeAndre Hopkins is wide open, with Posey, Mike Thomas, and Alan Bonner all candidates for Houston's three- and four-wide sets. Martin is more of an asset on special teams, but averaged just 26.3 yards on kick returns last year. The Texans plan to use a lot of "12" formations with Garrett Graham and Ryan Griffin on the field at the same time, so one of Martin or Posey could be cut if they keep five receivers. New coach Bill O'Brien recently mentioned slot receiver as a need for the Texans.

It sounds like O'Brien isn't entirely on board with theoretical incumbent slot receiver Keshawn Martin, who has disappointed as a 2012 fourth-round pick. He finished 2013 with 22 catches for 253 yards and two touchdowns, also turning in underwhelming averages on kickoff returns (26.3 yards) and punts (8.8).

Keshawn Martin caught one pass for two yards in Week 17 against the Titans.

Martin served as Houston's No. 3 receiver for much of the season but was far from fantasy relevancy. He appeared in all 16 games and caught 22 passes for 253 yards and two touchdowns. Martin also returned kicks and punts for the Texans. He has two years left on his rookie deal. Ideally, Martin would be a No. 4 receiver.

Texans WR Keshawn Martin caught four balls for 35 yards and a touchdown in Houston's Week 16 loss to Denver.

Martin is a situational slot receiver in the Texans' offense, and also returns punts. He made two big plays in this one, one on a 15-yard receiving score in the third quarter and the second on a 51-yard punt return. Martin has limited long-term appeal in fantasy leagues. His role is unlikely to change when the Texans face the Titans in Week 17.

Keshawn Martin caught four passes for 28 yards and a touchdown in Houston's Week 14 loss to the Jaguars.

The catches were a new season high for Martin, while the touchdown was his first. His six targets were largely a function of the Texans going into pass-happy comeback mode. Martin remains well off the re-draft radar.

Keshawn Martin (shoulder) is probable for Week 7 against the Chiefs.

Martin practiced on a limited basis this week and will continue to play through his shoulder injury. He has eight catches for 104 yards in six games as Houston's No. 3 receiver and remains off the fantasy radar.

Keshawn Martin caught two passes for 12 yards in Week 6 versus St. Louis.

Martin was targeted four times and lost a fumble on a kick return that was returned by the Rams for a touchdown. Martin isn't on the fantasy radar.

Keshawn Martin (shoulder) is questionable for Week 6.

Martin was limited in practice all week and will be a game-time decision. DeVier Posey will fill in as Houston's No. 3 receiver if Martin is held out.

Keshawn Martin (shoulder) did not participate in Texans practice Wednesday.

Martin hurt his shoulder in the blowout loss to the 49ers Sunday night. DeVier Posey will fill in as Houston's No. 3 receiver if Martin misses time.

Keshawn Martin injured his shoulder in Sunday's Week 5 blowout loss to the 49ers.

Martin exited the game early after catching one pass for 14 yards. He returned two punts for 11 yards and returned five kicks for 120 yards. Martin had some slippery mitts on those returns, almost losing the ball twice. DeVier Posey handled No. 3 receiver duties after Martin was hurt.

Keshawn Martin caught two passes for 35 yards in Sunday's Week 3 loss to the Ravens.

Martin played every snap after Andre Johnson (shin) left in the third quarter. He's really a smallish return man that picked up 18 of his yards on a wide receiver screen. Even if Johnson misses time, Martin will be a weak add with the Texans facing the Seahawks in Week 4.

Coach Gary Kubiak confirmed Keshawn Martin is Andre Johnson's direct backup.

Martin is ahead of Lestar Jean and DeVier Posey. It's notable with Johnson coming off a concussion. Martin, a 2012 fourth-rounder that goes just 5'11/194, has just 12 career catches but has shined as a return man.

Texans WR Keshawn Martin has reportedly made a "dramatic improvement" since last season.

Martin is locked into a roster spot, where he'll be the Texans' primary return man and slot receiver. He figures to improve at least slightly on last year's 10/85/1 line. Lestar Jean is squarely on the roster bubble.

Texans coach Gary Kubiak suggested that 2012 fourth-round pick Keshawn Martin hit a "rookie wall" in his first season.

"There's another level for this young man to reach," Kubiak said as Martin enters year two. "I think the season got a little long on him, the rookie wall whatever. ... I think he'll come back and be an even better contributor." Kubiak believes Martin can both contribute in the slot and become an "excellent returner."

Keshawn Martin caught a nine-yard touchdown in Houston's overtime Week 11 win against the Jaguars.

Martin kicked off the game's scoring with his lone catch in the first quarter. He beat Aaron Ross easily in the end zone and found pay dirt. Martin added five kickoff returns for a 32-yard average and brought back two punts at a 38-yard clip. The rookie wideout is not a fantasy option.
