Texans coach Gary Kubiak suggested that 2012 fourth-round pick Keshawn Martin hit a "rookie wall" in his first season.
"There's another level for this young man to reach," Kubiak said as Martin enters year two. "I think the season got a little long on him, the rookie wall whatever. ... I think he'll come back and be an even better contributor." Kubiak believes Martin can both contribute in the slot and become an "excellent returner." Feb 22 - 12:07 PM

Keshawn Martin caught a nine-yard touchdown in Houston's overtime Week 11 win against the Jaguars.

Martin kicked off the game's scoring with his lone catch in the first quarter. He beat Aaron Ross easily in the end zone and found pay dirt. Martin added five kickoff returns for a 32-yard average and brought back two punts at a 38-yard clip. The rookie wideout is not a fantasy option.

Keshawn Martin caught two passes for 24 yards in Houston's Week 6 loss to the Packers.

He was targeted six times. Martin came within one yard of his first-career touchdown on a 12-yard grab in the third quarter, catching the ball in stride as he exploded toward the goal line. He was wrestled down at the one, however. Martin caught the eye of NBC's Cris Collinsworth this evening, but with just six catches through six games, he's miles from redraft relevance.

Keshawn Martin has been installed as the Texans' new return man.

The return game was pathetic under Trindon Holliday, averaging 19.4 yards per kickoff return and 9.2 yards per punt return. During his four-year career at Michigan State, Martin averaged 23.4 yards on kickoff returns and 10.1 yards on punts. As a situational slot receiver this season, the rookie third-rounder Martin has chipped in four catches for 39 yards and 35 yards on two runs.

Keshawn Martin notched two catches for 20 yards in Houston's Week 3 win over the Broncos.

Martin also gained 21 yards on a second-quarter end-around. Martin's impressive jets were on full display on his 21-yard rush, but the catches were his first of the season. He's not yet worth a flier in deeper fantasy leagues.

The Texans plan to use a four-receiver rotation this season.

Andre Johnson is an every-down wideout and experienced Kevin Walter will play the majority of snaps as the team's best blocking receiver. That leaves Keshawn Martin and Lestar Jean to battle for scraps. The Texans aren't going to throw enough most weeks to support a third wideout.

HoustonTexans.com acknowledges WR Keshawn Martin "seems to have separated" from Lestar Jean and DeVier Posey in Texans camp.

Now all Martin has to do is hold that separation in the preseason. He'll start in place of Andre Johnson in Saturday's preseason opener. Raw rookie Posey shouldn't be a threat to Martin's status as the favorite in the slot, while Jean is more of an outside receiver. Martin is a name to keep in mind in the later rounds of PPR drafts.

Coach Gary Kubiak singled out rookie WR Keshawn Martin for his talent, consistency and mature approach.

"He's a talented young man. He's the one guy out of the rookies that has acted like a pro from the get-go, handling himself mentally, physically and can run all day," said Kubiak. "You coach him on something one time and it's fixed. He's a really sharp kid and professional in the meeting room ... He's just all business, and that's what pro football is all about." In addition to emerging as the favorite in the slot, Martin is also in the mix for the primary kick-return job.

The Houston Chronicle confirms fourth-round WR Keshawn Martin has "come on so strong that he's separating from the pack" as the Texans' third receiver.

Credit the Chronicle's Lance Zierlein for nailing this one from the get-go. While the Texans are high on Lestar Jean, he's better suited to the outside behind Andre Johnson and Kevin Walter whereas Martin's quickness and hands are ideal for the slot. A favorite of NFL Films analyst Greg Cosell, Martin has been "outstanding" in OTAs, minicamp and now training camp. The former Michigan State star is skyrocketing up the Dynasty rookie ranks, but remains a long shot for redraft value in Houston's run-oriented offense.

HoustonTexans.com considers fourth-round pick Keshawn Martin "one of the most impressive players" in camp.

Running with the first team in Andre Johnson's (groin) absence, Martin has impressed coach Gary Kubiak. "I think he’s showing that he’s capable of doing it," Kubiak said. "(He's) very professional in his approach. Doesn’t say a word, just works, and he’s going against (CB Johnathan Joseph) every day. That’ll make you good real quick." Martin is clearly ahead of third-rounder DeVier Posey. He'll be someone to monitor in the preseason.

Fourth-round pick Keshawn Martin is being mixed in with the first-team offense at Texans training camp.

Martin is a quick-twitch slot receiver with terrific short-area quickness and straight-line speed, and he's pushing Lestar Jean for work in three-wide sets. More so than third-rounder DeVier Posey, Martin is a candidate for rookie snaps on offense. Posey is working as the second-team "Z," behind Kevin Walter.

Coach Gary Kubiak labeled fourth-round WR/KR Keshawn Martin a "pleasant surprise" in OTAs.

Kubiak knew the Texans were drafting a kick returner in Martin, but he now believes the former Michigan State star can help offensively as a rookie. "He's been exceptional throughout OTAs," said Kubiak. "He's doing more than probably I thought he could do at this point." Martin is vying with Lestar Jean and DeVier Posey for snaps in multi-wide sets.

Texans coach Gary Kubiak describes fourth-round WR Keshawn Martin as a player with "a lot of explosion" and who is a work in progress.

Martin is a naturally explosive return man who should see some snaps at slot receiver as a rookie. "He needs to learn some things about the pro athlete he’s going against," Kubiak explained. "Sometimes when he separates, he thinks it’s over. You’ve got to keep playing, so that’s just something to get used to, but I like his work habits. ... He has an excellent chance."

Texans signed rookie draft picks WR Keshawn Martin, K Randy Bullock, C Ben Jones, T/G Nick Mondek, and DE Jared Crick to four-year contracts.

Bullock is probably the likeliest rookie here to make a fantasy impact in year one, but Martin was a pre-draft favorite of NFL Films guru Greg Cosell and could be a quick contributor in the slot. Slot receiver just hasn't been an overly productive position in Houston, particularly as they've become more run heavy.

Texans fourth-round WR Keshawn Martin is expected to be "limited to the return game and occasional action in the slot."

Now a decidedly run-heavy team, Houston doesn't utilize the slot receiver as much as most clubs. Third-rounder DeVier Posey, on the other hand, was drafted to "challenge to be the No. 3 receiver, and perhaps a No. 2 within a year." Posey could end up battling Lestar Jean for the third receiver role this summer.
