Cowboys signed S Robert Blanton, formerly of the Bills, to a one-year contract.
A fifth-round pick in 2012, Blanton showed well when forced into a starting role with the Vikings in 2014, but he has been mostly a reserve and special teamer. That could change in Dallas after the Cowboys lost both J.J. Wilcox and Barry Church in free agency, but Jeff Heath or a rookie look like the favorites for a starting job right now. Still, Blanton is a good depth signing for a team which needs it. Apr 20 - 10:37 AM

The Cowboys hosted free agent S Robert Blanton for a visit.

A cornerback at Notre Dame, Blanton has been a reserve safety with special teams value in the pros. The Cowboys lost SS Barry Church in free agency.

Bills placed S Robert Blanton (foot) on injured reserve.

This move makes room for Sammy Watkins on the 53-man roster. Buffalo also waived TE Gerald Christian and re-signed kickoff specialist Jordan Gay. Blanton started the last three games with Aaron Williams (neck) on injured reserve. Buffalo will likely turn to James Ihedigbo with Blanton sidelined.

The Buffalo News suggests Robert Blanton would be the backup plan at safety if Aaron Williams (neck) suffers a setback.

Williams has been fully cleared, but he has admitted he will not know he is ready for sure until after the first big hit. Signed to a one-year deal in March, Blanton is expected to have a role in sub packages regardless, but he would have the first crack at the starting job if something happened to Williams. Blanton started 17 games in his four years with the Vikings.

The Bills could use more three-safety packages this season.

Aaron Williams and Corey Graham are expected to have every-down roles, but it could potentially get free-agent addition Robert Blanton some snaps. Duke Williams and Jonathan Meeks are also in the mix for the No. 3 safety job.

Speaking Monday, Bills coach Rex Ryan claimed free addition Robert Blanton will compete for a starting job at safety.

It's just hot spring air, as Blanton has proven to be a core special teamer best limited to reserve duties on defense. FS Aaron Williams and SS Corey Graham are the Bills' likely starters.

Bills signed S Robert Blanton, formerly of the Vikings, to a one-year, $840,000 contract.

He must have liked what he saw after visiting Buffalo on Friday. Blanton is an interchangeable free/strong safety. He'll play on special teams while serving as depth behind Aaron Williams and Corey Graham.

Free agent S Robert Blanton is visiting the Bills on Friday.

It's Blanton's first action of free agency after playing 236 defensive snaps last season. In 2014, Blanton started 13 games and was in on 969 snaps, grading out positively both in run defense and coverage at Pro Football Focus. At the very least, the former Golden Domer is a quality special teamer.

Vikings coach Mike Zimmer said the team is looking for the "right" guy to pair with S Harrison Smith.

Robert Blanton and Andrew Sendejo spent time opposite Smith the last two seasons, but both are free agents and not viewed as the answer. Antone Exum and Anthony Harris also got starts last season, but it appears clear the Vikings are looking for a big-time safety to pair with their young Pro Bowler. Already loaded with young talent, Minnesota's defense will be a force for the foreseeable future.

Robert Blanton confirmed he will open the season as the Vikings' starting strong safety.

Blanton's inclusion in Minnesota's final preseason game was a bit curious but he was always expected to win the job. The 26-year-old played 989 snaps last season and received a positive grade from Pro Football Focus.

Vikings S Robert Blanton (hamstring) has been sidelined since early in camp, and is uncertain for Friday's preseason game against the Chargers.

"We are hoping that he can play in this ballgame on Friday night so we can get some tape on him and evaluate him in game situations," coach Leslie Frazier said. A physical run stopper, Blanton was in the mix for snaps heading into camp, but his roster spot will be up in the air if he misses a third straight game.

Vikings signed fifth-round S Robert Blanton to a four-year contract.

The second of two Notre Dame safeties drafted by Minnesota, Blanton is a former cornerback with questionable speed. The Vikings believe he can be a hybrid safety/corner who can "match up on tight ends, can actually play in the middle of the field or play off the hash." Blanton could push Mistral Raymond for the starting job opposite Harrison Smith.

Coach Leslie Frazier expects the Vikings to have an "open competition" at safety.

First-round pick Harrison Smith is penciled in at free safety after the Vikings traded up to get him, but Frazier's comments leave the door open for fifth-round pick Robert Blanton to beat out veterans Mistral Raymond and Jamarca Sanford at strong safety. Blanton is converting from corner, but we wouldn't downplay his chances of besting Sanford and Raymond after both had sub-par 2011 campaigns.

Fifth-round pick Robert Blanton worked as a starting safety as the Vikings opened rookie minicamp on Friday.

This is a rookie-only minicamp, so Jamarca Sanford and Mistral Raymond aren't there. Blanton's positioning does confirm that the college cornerback has been converted to safety, and we wouldn't diminish his chances of starting there.
Fri, May 4, 2012 01:10:00 PM

The Vikings plan to use No. 139 overall pick Robert Blanton at safety.

It was initially unknown whether Blanton would be used as a safety or corner. At 6'1/208, the Notre Dame product is a physical defensive back who struggles with hip fluidity and off coverage. He'll compete for reps with Jamarca Sanford and Mistral Raymond behind first-round pick Harrison Smith.
