Cowboys WR Danny Coale (ACL) is targeting training camp for a full return to practice.
Coale blew out his knee last November. During OTAs and minicamp, he mostly went through his rehab routine on the side. He needs to be on the field come August to earn a roster spot as insurance in the slot. Jun 18 - 8:18 AM

Cowboys WR Danny Coale (knee) is practicing at OTAs Tuesday.

Coale tore his ACL in November, and it's unlikely that he's going through practice full-speed. It's still good news for the 2012 fifth-round pick because just 11 days ago he had yet to be medically cleared. After spending last season on the practice squad, Coale faces an uphill battle for a roster spot.

Cowboys WR Danny Coale is still not medically cleared after tearing his left ACL on the team's practice squad last November.

Coale underwent surgery on December 11 and isn't a realistic candidate for a 2013 roster spot. Injury prone at Virginia Tech as well, Coale also broke his left foot at the Cowboys' first OTA as a rookie. A slot receiver prospect, Coale is targeting the first day of training camp for full medical clearance.

Cowboys practice squad WR Danny Coale suffered a torn left ACL in his knee on Thursday.

Coale was a fifth-round pick out of Virginia Tech in April and was among Dallas' final cuts. He has spent the entire season on the practice squad. The first-year wideout dealt with a stress fracture in his foot and a hamstring strain in training camp. Coale will hope to be back in time for the start of offseason workouts.

Cowboys signed WR Danny Coale to the practice squad.

The Cowboys are likely breathing a sigh of relief their fifth-round pick made it through waivers. Provided he stays healthy and makes up for his lost preseason development, Coale should be the first man up if Dallas decides it's seen enough of Kevin Ogletree, Dwayne Harris, Cole Beasley or Andre Holmes.

Cowboys waived WR Danny Coale.

By the time the fifth-rounder overcame foot and quad injuries, he had fallen too far behind Kevin Ogletree, Dwayne Harris, Cole Beasley and Andre Holmes. The undrafted Beasley has been a more promising slot prospect this summer. Coale hadn't shown much speed or quickness coming off injury, according to beat writer Todd Archer.

ESPN Dallas expects fifth-round rookie Danny Coale to beat out Andre Holmes for the Cowboys' final receiver spot.

Injuries jeopardized Coale's roster spot after he appeared to be a lock in the spring, but he made his exhibition debut on Saturday against the Rams. Holmes, meanwhile, reportedly showed up to camp out of shape, and is now dealing with a back injury. Holmes' size (6-foot-5, 208 pounds) may be his only advantage over Coale's slot and special teams prowess.

The Cowboys' official website believes fifth-round WR Danny Coale's roster spot is "certainly not secure."

Coach Jason Garrett admitted as much last Thursday. Coale's slot prowess and the Cowboys' lack of a certified No. 3 receiver made him a popular sleeper pick following the draft, but it's hard to see Coale making an impact even if he does manage to nail down a roster spot. Coale needs to show something in Saturday's preseason game against the Rams.

Coach Jason Garrett acknowledged that fifth-round WR Danny Coale's (foot, quad) chances of making the roster are "certainly hampered" if he misses a second preseason game.

Garrett "feels good" about Coale, but concedes that the rookie is "way behind" at this point. With Andre Holmes, Cole Beasley, Tim Benford and Dwayne Harris all pushing Kevin Ogletree for the No. 3 receiver job, Coale's roster odds are becoming increasingly longer.

Cowboys fifth-round WR Danny Coale (foot surgery) has been activated from the active/PUP list.

Coale won't begin practicing until Thursday, as league rules dictate players coming off the active/PUP must wait three days to take the field. The Cowboys are off on Wednesday. It means Coale might not be ready for next Monday's preseason opener. Coale will compete with Andre Holmes, Kevin Ogletree and Dwayne Harris for No. 3 receiver duties.

Cowboys fifth-round WR Danny Coale (foot surgery) is aiming to begin practicing next week.

Per beat writer Brandon George, Coale hasn't "cut much yet," so that could be a bit overly optimistic. Coale can't miss more than one or two preseason games if he's to have a legitimate chance at locking down Dallas' No. 3 receiver job.

Cowboys fifth-round WR Danny Coale (foot surgery) is not expected to practice until early August.

Coale sustained a fracture in his left foot on the first day of OTAs. If healthy, the slot man is part of a unimpressive group of wideouts behind starters Dez Bryant and Miles Austin. Coale, Andre Holmes, Kevin Ogletree and Dwayne Harris are all in the mix for the No. 3 gig.

DallasCowboys.com allows that fifth-round WR Danny Coale (foot surgery) may "perhaps" begin camp on the active/PUP list.

It's hardly surprising that the Cowboys' official website is taking an optimistic view of Coale's recovery, but the reality is he's almost certain to begin camp on the active/PUP after going under-the-knife in late May. However, he should be ready for the regular season, and likely a few preseason games. Depending on how quickly Coale gets healthy, he'll be in the mix for Dallas' No. 3 receiver job.

Cowboys signed fifth-round WR Danny Coale to a four-year contract.

Cole had surgery on May 24 to repair a broken fifth metatarsal in his left foot. While he should be healthy by the opener, the absence from OTAs and probably a large chunk of training camp will cost Coale a chance to begin the season as Dallas' third receiver. He's not set up for a big 2012 impact. Coale does project as an intriguing slot option, but he's going to have to stay healthy.

Cowboys rookie WR Danny Coale will undergo surgery on Thursday to repair a broken bone in his left foot.

Per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, it's a broken fifth metatarsal that should keep Coale out a month. The Cowboys hope to have Coale on the field early in training camp, but the missed practice time will set the fifth-rounder back in his competition for the third receiver role. Andre Holmes, Kevin Ogletree, Dwayne Harris, and undrafted rookie Tim Benford are also vying for the job.
