49ers signed sixth-round FS Trent Robinson to a four-year contract.
Robinson is quite small for a free safety, but unlike Ahmad Black, he can run. He also throws his body around in the running game and flashes elite ball skills. We wouldn't be surprised to see Robinson make himself difficult to keep off the field as soon as his rookie year. He can also cover the slot.

At 5'10/195 with good wheels, Robinson has been compared to a poor man's Earl Thomas. He clearly needs to add some bulk and strength to play either safety spot at the NFL level. Robinson started 13 games for the Spartans at free safety in 2011, making 80 tackles. He'll fight for playing time with Colin Jones as a backup initially.

Kendall Hunter (Achilles surgery) still expects to be a full go for training camp.
Hunter, who blew out his left Achilles' tendon on Nov. 25, recently resumed sprint work. He won't participate in OTAs or minicamps, but claims he's on track to battle for reps behind Frank Gore come August. Still, it would be an awfully quick recovery for Hunter. Note that Mikel Leshoure's rehab from the same injury lasted roughly 13 months. Leshoure also lacked burst upon return.

Although the 49ers' medical exam of Marcus Lattimore (knee surgeries) yielded positive results according to Jim Harbaugh, the coach says Lattimore must take a "step back" in terms of cutting drills.
"The ACL looks really good for Marcus," insisted Harbaugh. "We're just going to have to take a step back in terms of the cutting because we want that inside of the knee, the lateral side of the knee to heal fully. But we're good." Lattimore conceded he'd be "fine" with sitting out the entire 2013 season. Harbaugh said the 49ers will determine his playing status at a later date.

Coach Jim Harbaugh insists that Michael Crabtree's Achilles' tendon tear is not a season-ending injury.
The Niners aren't giving any kind of firm timetable, but the rehabilitation process typically takes at least six months. If Crabtree is back in exactly six months, he'd return for a Monday night game against the Redskins in Week 12. However, he'll almost certainly be eased back in slowly as the Niners keep their eye on having him make an impact in the playoffs. Owners in standard re-draft formats can cross Crabtree off their draft boards.

Mario Manningham (knee) believes he'll be ready for Week 1.
It's an optimistic assertion. Manningham tore his ACL and PCL during Week 16 last season, a devastating injury that most players need nine months to recover from. He won't be ready for the start of training camp and will be in a race to avoid the PUP list. The Niners can't count on Manningham while making plans to replace Michael Crabtree (Achilles').

Williams was facing an uphill battle to be ready for the offseason program, but he's reportedly on pace to return at the start of training camp. Manningham was never expected to participate in OTAs, and he's a candidate to start the season on the PUP list. Both will compete for roster spots.
