Dan Herron rushed nine times for 25 yards in Saturday's preseason game, adding a 10-yard reception.
Herron started and carried the mail as the Colts rested Frank Gore. Herron is locked in as Gore's backup, but his work could be sporadic, as Gore has a three-down skill-set. Herron is an excellent handcuff, but not a standalone option in fantasy leagues. Aug 29 - 11:08 PM

The Colts held Dan Herron out of their preseason opener.

They held out Frank Gore and Vick Ballard, as well, with Zurlon Tipton getting the start and eventually giving way to sixth-round pick Josh Robinson. Herron's absence could signal that he's locked in as Gore's top backup. Either way, Herron is the clear favorite for the handcuff position.
Aug 16 - 3:17 PM

Colts re-signed exclusive rights free agents RB Dan Herron, OLB Cam Johnson and LB Daniel Adongo.

Keeping Herron was a no-brainer after he ran circles around Trent Richardson last season, averaging 4.5 yards per carry with 21 catches. It's worth noting that "Boom" was less effective in the playoffs, posting a 3.77 YPC on 65 totes. He should remain a part of Indy's 2015 backfield, but the Colts won't want to enter Week 1 with Herron as the starter.
Mar 5 - 5:09 PM

ESPN Colts reporter Mike Wells considers Dan Herron "more of a backup than starter" in the NFL.

Herron handled himself very well as a feature back in the playoffs, touching the ball 65 times in three games. But he averaged just 3.77 YPC and was squeezing the most out of his natural talent. Coach Chuck Pagano admitted Monday that improving the run game is a priority for him this offseason. Herron will face plenty of competition for carries in 2015, possibly in the form of injury-risks Ahmad Bradshaw (free agent coming off broken leg) and Vick Ballard (coming off Achilles' tear). This is also a strong class for running backs in the draft.
Jan 20 - 9:06 AM

Dan Herron rushed 10 times for 51 yards and caught two passes for 11 yards in Sunday's AFC Championship Game loss at New England.

Herron's two brutal drops early on really hurt the Colts, but they had no prayer of winning this game anyway. And they likely wouldn't have even been in this spot if it wasn't for Boom. He took over as the feature back when the playoffs hit, racking up 45-170-2 on the ground and 20-128-0 through the air in three games. This is a back that squeezes the most out of his talent, making him the anti-Trent Richardson. Herron will almost certainly face competition for the starting job this offseason, but he showed more than enough to get a long look from the coaches. It's a depth chart situation to monitor closely throughout the spring and summer.
Jan 18 - 10:40 PM

Dan Herron rushed for 63 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries and caught eight passes for 32 yards in the Colts' Divisional Round playoff win over Denver.

Herron gave the Colts their first points on a counter off-tackle touchdown run from six yards out. The onetime Ohio State star played this game in noticeable pain, nursing a shoulder injury he appeared to suffer early in the first quarter. Herron rarely came out, "losing" only three touches to Zurlon Tipton. We wonder about Herron's health entering the AFC Championship Game, but he is a gritty performer who has impressed with his versatility this postseason, catching 18 passes and handling a whopping 53 touches through two January games.
Jan 11 - 8:10 PM

Colts coach Chuck Pagano assured the Colts will "stay the course" with Dan Herron despite his two fumbles in the Wild Card Round.

Herron also lost two fumbles in the regular season. He is still by-far the Colts' best tailback option, however, and Pagano noted Monday that benching a running back for fumbling "might kill a guy's confidence." Rather, by sticking with him, the Colts are trying to increase Herron's confidence. Novel concept.
Jan 5 - 4:19 PM

Coach Chuck Pagano had praise for Dan Herron following Sunday's win over the Bengals despite two fumbles.

The fumbles are easier to swallow because they didn't cost the Colts the game and because Herron was a huge part of the win. He racked up 141 total yards, 10 catches and a touchdown. "He's gaining confidence," Pagano said. "Obviously, there's some plays out there that he'd like to have back and you've got to clean up, but the guy's a playmaker. He can create when there's not much there." In other words, Herron is the anti-Trent Richardson. Expect Boom to be the clear-cut feature back again when the Colts travel to Denver Sunday.
Jan 5 - 9:43 AM

Dan Herron rushed 12 times for 56 yards and a touchdown in the Colts' Wild Card win over the Bengals, adding 10 catches for an additional 85 yards.

It was a charmed day on paper, but it's Herron's two fumbles the Colts' coaching staff will be talking about in the build up to the Divisional Round. Herron's first cough up came on a great play from Bengals CB Darqueze Dennard, but the second was the kind of soft loss that will drive a coach nuts. The good news is, Trent Richardson is so far in the doghouse that he appeared to play all of one snap. Herron was backed up by Zurlon Tipton. Herron got vanishingly-few reps after his second fumble, but is going to carry the mail against the Broncos. He'll just be on a short leash.
Jan 4 - 4:25 PM

Dan Herron rushed 10 times for 35 yards and caught three passes for 31 yards in Sunday's Week 17 win at Tennessee.

As usual, Herron was far more effective than Trent Richardson. It's telling that when the Colts went to their backups in the second half, T-Rich split time with Zurlon Tipton while Herron watched from the sideline. Expect the Colts to ride Herron for a bigger piece of the pie in the Wild Card game next week. Boom finishes his third NFL regular season with 78 carries for 351 yards (4.50 YPC) with one touchdown and 21 catches for 173 yards. He proved he can handle the Ahmad Bradshaw role at a lesser, but still reasonable, level.

Dan Herron rushed seven times for three yards and caught 3 passes for 37 yards Week 16 against the Cowboys.

The entire Colts offense was in neutral in this one, and Herron was no exception. The interior of Indianapolis' offense line was dominated all game, giving the backs almost no room to run. Herron did have a long reception called back by penalty, and is still the Colts' best option at running back. He will look to finish the regular season strong against the Titans' leaky run defense next week.

Dan Herron rushed 11 times for 60 yards and caught two passes for 12 yards in Sunday's Week 15 win over the Texans.

Once again, Herron made Trent Richardson (9-32-0) look like he was running in quicksand. But once again, the Colts declined to reduce T-Rich's snaps in favor of the better back. It's frustrating, but there's nothing we can do except reduce Herron's projection to 9-13 touches per game. He'll be a flex option only with that kind of volume against the Cowboys in Week 16.
Sun, Dec 14, 2014 04:34:00 PM

Dan Herron rushed eight times for 26 yards and caught four balls for 45 yards in the Colts' Week 14 win over the Browns.

The Colts' running backs did nothing on the ground this game, but Herron saved his fantasy owners in PPR with heavy pass-game involvement. In addition to overtaking Trent Richardson (seven Week 14 runs) as Indy's lead ball carrier, Herron has inherited the old Ahmad Bradshaw role. He's essentially an every-week RB2/flex play entering a Week 15 date with the Texans.
Sun, Dec 7, 2014 05:40:00 PM

Colts sources tell ESPN's Josina Anderson they expect an even bigger workload for Dan Herron in Sunday's game at Cleveland.

Herron got just 10 touches in last week's win over Washington, but totaled more rushing yards (88) than Trent Richardson has had in any of his 26 games as a Colt. He's more than earned a bigger role despite some ball security issues. We'd project an even timeshare between Herron and T-Rich, even in Richardson's revenge spot.
Sun, Dec 7, 2014 12:14:00 PM

Coach Chuck Pagano had praise for Dan Herron Sunday despite another lost fumble.

Although Herron has coughed up the ball twice in the last two weeks, the Colts know they can't go away from him. He had more yards on eight carries (88) Sunday than Trent Richardson has had in any of his 26 games as a Colt. "He's a talented, talented guy, and I think we've seen that out of him," Pagano said of Herron. "He's quick, he's fast to hit the hole and once he gets outside, he's got some long speed." Running circles around T-Rich, Herron will be a RB2 against the Browns even if though he'll lose roughly half the touches to Richardson.
