Panthers waived WR Marvin McNutt, WR Kealoha Pilares, DE Alex Hall, P Jordan Gay, DL Lindey Gaydosh, LB Anthony Morales, OL Oscar Johnson, and DL Craig Roh.
It's generally not a good sign for players when they are a part of first cuts. McNutt, a former Eagles draft pick, has now flamed out with Philly, Miami, and Carolina. Hall was trying to make the club as a former CFL player. Sun, Aug 24, 2014 02:20:00 PM

Dolphins waived or released WR Marvin McNutt, DE Antwan Applewhite, G Chris Barker, C Sam Brenner, WR Keenan Davis, DT A.J. Francis, S Keelan Johnson, S Jordan Kovacs, OT Andrew McDonald, DE Tristin Okpalaugo, CB De’Andre Presley, DT Kheeston Randall, DT Tracy Robertson, LB Lee Robinson and LB Austin Spitler.

In 2012, the last team to announce its final cuts was the Jaguars. Their GM, Gene Smith, was relieved of his duties following the season. In 2013, the last team to announce its final cuts was the Dolphins. Their GM, Jeff Ireland, is in the final year of his contract.

Dolphins WRs coach Ken O’Keefe was new WR Marvin McNutt's offensive coordinator at Iowa.

A 2012 sixth-round pick of the Eagles, McNutt was claimed off waivers in May. Iowa's all-time leading receiver, McNutt can only be helped by the reunion with his college coach, but he's still going to have a hard time cracking Miami's improved receiver corps. McNutt is 6-foot-3, 213 pounds with 4.50 speed, but he'll need to focus on special teams in camp.

Dolphins claimed WR Marvin McNutt off waivers from the Eagles.

A 2012 sixth-rounder, McNutt couldn't make it past final cuts before being promoted from the practice squad for four games late in the season. McNutt has 4.50 wheels to go along with a 6-foot-3, 216-pound frame, but has the makings of a career special teamer/practice squader.

Eagles waived WR Marvin McNutt.

A sixth-round pick out of Iowa last year, McNutt started on the practice squad and then appeared in four late-season games. He made no catches as a rookie. Despite solid straight-line speed, McNutt never came close to pushing Riley Cooper or Jason Avant for backup wideout snaps. He lacks short-area quicks.

Eagles promoted WR Marvin McNutt from the practice squad.

With Damaris Johnson replacing DeSean Jackson (ribs, injured reserve) in the starting lineup, McNutt will be in for a healthy dose of snaps on special teams and perhaps a handful on offense. He'll likely be held off the stat-sheet, however.

Eagles signed WRs Marvin McNutt and B.J. Cunningham to their practice squad.

McNutt passed through waivers unclaimed, confirming he's not especially highly regarded around the NFL. A sixth-round pick in April, McNutt caught one ball for 13 yards in the preseason. Cunningham, who was drafted by the Dolphins, had five catches for 38 yards in four exhibition games. McNutt is the better prospect.

Eagles waived WR Marvin McNutt, G/C Steve Vallos, S Phillip Thomas and FB Emil Igewanagu.

McNutt's release is a sign that the Eagles are confident in Riley Cooper's (collarbone) status for Week 1. They will roll with Cooper and possibly undrafted rook Damaris Johnson behind Jeremy Maclin, DeSean Jackson and Jason Avant. McNutt is a practice squad candidate.

Coach Andy Reid confirmed that the Eagles won't pursue a veteran wideout to replace Riley Cooper (broken collarbone).

While Cooper rehabs for the next six weeks, sixth-round rookie Marvin McNutt will get his chance. With a big camp, he could slip into the No. 4 wideout job behind Jeremy Maclin, DeSean Jackson and Jason Avant. McNutt has the size and hands to excel at the NFL level, but speed and quickness are question marks.

Sixth-round WR Marvin McNutt caught "everything thrown in his direction" in the Eagles' offseason program.

McNutt is off to a good start in his quest for a roster spot, and should push Riley Cooper for the Eagles' No. 4 receiver job if his strong offseason carries over into camp. Cooper's blocking and special teams prowess might tilt the battle in his favor.

The Eagles "strongly considered" selecting WR Marvin McNutt in the fifth round, only to go with OT Dennis Kelly because there were fewer tackle prospects than wide receiver prospects available.

The point is that McNutt lasted to the sixth round only because this year's receiver class was so deep. While he's a bit of a project, McNutt has the size, athleticism, and skills to overtake Riley Cooper as the No. 4 receiver and red-zone specialist down the road.

Eagles signed sixth-round WR Marvin McNutt to a four-year contract.

A heralded quarterback recruit out of the St. Louis area, McNutt converted to wideout during his freshman year at Iowa and finished his career as the Hawkeyes' all-time leader in receiving yards. More of a straight-line athlete who plays without physicality, McNutt will struggle for snaps as a rookie.

Eagles sixth-rounder Marvin McNutt is expected to push Riley Cooper for a roster spot this year.

Both players are big, physical receivers, best used in situational roles. Cooper may have more pure talent, but he's shown a penchant for dropping passes and not fighting for the ball in traffic. The Eagles are unlikely to keep both on the roster this year.

Eagles selected Iowa WR Marvin McNutt with the No. 194 overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft.

Strictly a straight-line receiver, McNutt has 4.50-4.54 vertical speed but must hit his stride to reach that gear. He does not drop his weight when breaking back routes and lacks crisp footwork to make quick cuts to create separation. McNutt did post 1,314 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns as a senior but glides in all aspects of his game. It is doubtful he makes an impact in his rookie year.
