Panthers SS Quintin Mikell (ankle) has been ruled out for Week 3.

Promoted off the practice squad just two days ago, Robert Lester will start in Mikell's absence. It's excellent news for the Giants. Being ruled out at this stage of the week suggests Mikell has a high-ankle sprain. He's week to week.

Panthers SS Quintin Mikell left Week 2 against the Bills with an ankle injury.

Mikell was carted off after getting a sack and forced fumble late in the third quarter. With Charles Godfrey and Josh Thomas also leaving with injuries, the Panthers are down to just four healthy defensive backs.

The Panthers will start Quintin Mikell at strong safety in Week 1.

It's a nice IDP matchup for Mikell against the run-heavy Seahawks; Mikell is a "box" safety and could flirt with double-digit tackles. He's getting the nod over Mike Mitchell, who is listed as doubtful with a strained calf.

Panthers agreed to terms with SS Quintin Mikell on a one-year contract.

Mikell has been on the street ever since the Rams released him way back in March. We still wouldn't be surprised if he eventually pushes Mike Mitchell for the starting strong safety job. Mikell knows defensive coordinator Sean McDermott's system from their time together in Philadelphia and was a top-five safety in ProFootballFocus' grades last season.

Free agent SS Quintin Mikell said he's been "receiving some calls."

Mikell, 33 next month, asked his agent "not to mention any team names until something is concrete." His market has been relatively quiet since being cut by the Rams in March. Mikell was reportedly talking with the Panthers last month. Nothing came of it. He's a strong blitzer and run defender, but can't cover.

The Rams are now considered "not likely" to re-sign free agent SS Quintin Mikell.

The Rams left Mikell's nameplate above his locker-room stall for much of the spring, but decided to move forward with journeyman Matt Giordano. The Panthers have since jumped into the mix. Mikell would make a lot of sense in Carolina, reuniting with former Eagles defensive backs coach Sean McDermott.

Panthers coach Ron Rivera confirmed the team's "curiosity" in free agent SS Quintin Mikell.

Eight days ago, sources told CSN Philly that the Panthers were "talking" with Mikell. Nothing has developed since, but the fit makes a whole lot of sense. Mikell would be a massive upgrade on the likes of Haruki Nakamura, D.J. Campbell, Mike Mitchell, and Robert Lester as a "box" safety.

A source tells CSN Philly that free agent SS Quintin Mikell is talking with the Panthers.

A top-five safety last season according to Pro Football Focus, the Rams released Mikell in March due to age (33 in September) and a $6 million base salary. He's since attracted very little known interest. The Panthers currently have Mike Mitchell, D.J. Campbell, and UDFA Robert Lester all battling for the starting strong safety gig. Mikell would be a significant upgrade on that motley crew.

The Rams still haven't removed free agent SS Quintin Mikell's nameplate from above his locker stall.

It's an indication they remain open to the idea of re-signing Mikell despite cutting him in March. The Rams would probably take back Mikell for a veteran minimum salary. For now, they're auditioning third-round pick T.J. McDonald as the starting strong safety. The free safety job is wide open to competition.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports the Rams "remain interested" in free agent SS Quintin Mikell.

If Mikell were to re-sign with the Rams it would "almost certainly" be as a backup, according to beat writer Jim Thomas. The Rams drafted SS T.J. McDonald in the third round of the draft, and Darian Stewart seems to be the favorite for the other safety spot. It's currently the weak spot of St. Louis' defense.

Coach Jeff Fisher says the Rams "have interest" in re-signing free agent SS Quintin Mikell.

"We have interest," Fisher said. "He played very well for us. The defensive staff was really happy with him last year." Mikell was cut two weeks ago when the sides couldn't agree on a restructure of his $6 million salary. The Rams then whiffed on Louis Delmas, and the free agent crop has dried up since.

The Rams have not ruled out bringing back recently released SS Quintin Mikell.

Mikell was released over the weekend. He was due $6 million, and it's unclear if the Rams even approached him about a pay cut. Mikell shouldn't lack for suitors, so a return to the Rams on a cheaper deal might be last resort. The Rams made an offer to free agent S Louis Delmas on Wednesday, but he skipped town.

Rams will release SS Quintin Mikell.

Mikell graded out as a top-five safety in Pro Football Focus' 2012 ratings, but he's going on age 33 and was owed $6 million. The Rams do not value aging safeties enough to pay them that kind of coin. They now have needs at both safety spots and figure to pursue free agents like Louis Delmas, Kenny Phillips, Pat Chung, and Chris Clemons. Mikell should not lack for suitors because he can still play. He racked up 101 tackles, three sacks, and four forced fumbles last season.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch believes FS Quintin Mikell could be cut this offseason.

Mikell is due a $6 million salary and counts $9 million against the cap. Free agent SS Craig Dahl is not expected to be re-signed. So, the Post-Dispatch says it's "possible - some say likely" that the Rams will be looking for two new safeties this offseason. Mikell had a fine season as an in-the-box safety, so he could be asked to restructure. He'll land on his feet if he's cut.
