49ers promoted OLB Cam Johnson from the practice squad.
A seventh-round pick last April, Johnson will be making his NFL debut if he's active for Sunday's showdown with Seattle. He should be limited to special teams. Considered a high-ceiling talent, Johnson should get every opportunity to earn a roster spot next summer. Fri, Dec 21, 2012 05:16:00 PM

49ers seventh-round OLB Cam Johnson (knee surgery) returned to practice on Tuesday.

Already entering the league with a red flag attached to his knee, Johnson had a surgical procedure not long after the draft and has rarely practiced with the team. Johnson's return is a good sign, but he's still very much on the roster bubble.

49ers OLB Cam Johnson is recovering from a "procedure" on his knee.

The Niners expect Johnson back by training camp, so it sounds like a routine, cleanup surgery. Coach Jim Harbaugh revealed that Johnson came out of Virginia with a bit of a knee red flag. He'll be on the roster bubble this August.

49ers signed No. 237 overall pick DE Cam Johnson to a four-year contract.

Johnson was the No. 50 overall prospect on in the pre-draft rankings of NFL Network's Mike Mayock, and was chosen one of the top late-round value picks by NFL Network's Michael Lombardi. He slid due to concerns that he's an NFL "tweener" without elite college production. Johnson will be a development project for the 49ers.

49ers selected Virginia DE Cam Johnson with the No. 237 overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft.

A three-year starter, Johnson played outside linebacker before shifting to defensive end as a senior. Johnson has plus athleticism for his size (6-foot-3, 268 pounds), but suffers from sickle cell trait, which can affect a player's energy level. He's also faced questions about his effort. He's a high-ceiling pick, but will be less than 50-50 to make the Niners roster.
