Jonas Gray out-snapped LeGarrette Blount 17-15 in Week 15 against the Dolphins.
He also out-touched and out-gained Blount on the ground 12-10 and 62-17, respectively. Blount saw most of the work in the first half, but wasn't churning out yards. Gray was called on in the second half and handled most of the touches to close out the game. It's now a three-headed backfield in New England, leaving none of Gray, Blount, or Shane Vereen as bankable fantasy options. Dec 15 - 9:45 AM

Jonas Gray rushed 11 times for 62 yards in the Patriots' Week 15 win over the Dolphins, adding a seven-yard reception.

Largely mothballed for the past three weeks, Gray surprisingly led the Patriots' backfield in both touches and yards, though six of his rushes came deep into garbage time. Gray was involved while the game was still in doubt, however, thrusting the Pats' backfield back into a three-way quagmire. Be that as it may, Gray won't be on the fantasy radar against the Jets' stout run defense in Week 16.
Dec 14 - 6:01 PM

Jonas Gray rushed two times for nine yards in Sunday night's Week 14 win over the Chargers.

Gray was only used to spell LeGarrette Blount. He played limited snaps as the Patriots' No. 3 back. Gray is safe to drop in fantasy leagues.
Dec 8 - 1:12 AM

Jonas Gray rushed once for four yards in New England's Week 13 loss to the Packers.

Gray was the Patriots' No. 4 back, running behind LeGarrette Blount, Brandon Bolden and Shane Vereen. We know coach Bill Belichick changes things up on a weekly basis, but with Blount averaging 6.18 yards per carry as a Patriot, Gray is unlikely to escape the doghouse any time soon. He can be dropped in 12-14 team leagues if you're hurting for a roster spot.
Nov 30 - 8:05 PM

ESPN Boston's Mike Reiss says the "feeling" is LeGarrette Blount and Jonas Gray will "likely split carries, unless one gets hot" in Sunday's game at Green Bay.

Reiss says Patriots players expect a power-running approach this week, a logical move as the Packers are soft against the run and keeping the ball out of Aaron Rodgers' hands will be a priority. However, that doesn't mean that Blount will get all the big-back carries like he did last week. Gray appears to be out of the doghouse, serving his time for being late to practice last week. Reiss suggests a series-by-series rotation between Blount and Gray, capping a lot of upside.

Nov 29 - 9:32 PM

Jonas Gray didn't play a single snap in the Patriots' Week 12 win over Detroit.

Shane Vereen played 62 downs, LeGarrette Blount played 17, and Brandon Bolden played two. Last week's four-TD superstar was nowhere to be found after reporting to the Patriots' facility late on Friday and missing practice. Gray could be doghoused for good. He is a replacement-level power back.
Nov 23 - 4:27 PM

Jonas Gray is active for Week 12 against the Lions.

So is LeGarrette Blount. Gray is "up" despite missing Friday's practice, but his usage and role are entirely up in the air. It wouldn't be surprising if he got 12-14 carries against Detroit. It wouldn't be surprising, either, if he didn't play at all. He's an extremely volatile Week 12 fantasy start.
Nov 23 - 11:59 AM

Jonas Gray is expected to be active for Week 12 against the Lions despite oversleeping and missing Friday's practice.

LeGarrette Blount will also be active for the Patriots after being signed earlier in the week. New England will "divvy up" the carries between the two big backs, while Shane Vereen will also play heavy snaps. We're avoiding both Gray and Blount in fantasy against Detroit's stout interior run defense. Vereen is a fine RB2/FLEX option with the Lions allowing backs to catch the ball in space.
Nov 23 - 9:03 AM

FOX Sports' Mike Garofolo reports Jonas Gray was late to the Patriots' facility on Friday because he overslept.

Per Garofolo, Gray's "phone died," which he was ostensibly relying upon as an alarm. He drove straight to Gillette Stadium, but was promptly sent home by the Patriots' coaching staff. Garofolo reports Gray has texted teammates to apologize, including Tom Brady. He is "hoping" to get Bill Belichick to hear his side of the story "this afternoon." We wish young Jonas the best of luck.
Nov 21 - 2:38 PM

ESPN Boston's Mike Reiss reports Jonas Gray was not permitted to practice on Friday because he showed up late to the Patriots' facility.

Uh oh. The Patriots are a zero-tolerance team when it comes to matters like this, and for as great as Gray was in fantasy football last week, he is a replaceable player. That is especially the case after New England signed LeGarrette Blount to a two-year deal on Thursday. Gray's usage for Week 12 against the Lions is now entirely uncertain. Blount could steal his role.
Nov 21 - 2:02 PM

The NFL and Elias Sports Bureau made a stat change Tuesday, crediting Jonas Gray with 37 carries for 201 yards and four touchdowns in Week 11 against the Colts.

Gray had a previous rushing line of 38-199-4. He had a minus-two-yard rush nullified because of a penalty. This is huge news if you play in a league with bonuses for 200-plus yards rushing, which many do. Gray will likely be the most heavily added player in Week 12, but we need to temper expectations.

Nov 19 - 8:30 AM

ESPN Boston expects a "different offensive approach" out of the Patriots in Sunday's Week 12 game against the Lions.

Recent Patriot gameplans when facing the Colts have been to smash them in the mouth with power runs. That is not going to work against a Lions defense that leads the league in rush yards allowed per game (68.8), YPC allowed (3.03) and is tied for second in touchdowns allowed (4). It's risky to project Bill Belichick's thoughts, but this certainly feels like a Shane Vereen game. Gray is a riskier RB2 than many think off his four-touchdown outburst.

Nov 18 - 12:59 PM

Jonas Gray had 38 carries for 199 yards and four touchdowns in Sunday night's Week 11 win over the Colts.

The Patriots featured Gray in a workhorse role, giving him the majority of snaps over Shane Vereen. It's a similar strategy to what New England did to the Colts in the playoffs last year, when they rode LeGarrette Blount and Stevan Ridley to six touchdowns. Gray got goal-line and early-down work over Vereen, who finished with five touches. All four of his touchdowns came from inside the five-yard line. Gray should continue to get the bulk of the carries going forward, but is going to be hard to trust in a Week 12 matchup against the Lions. Available in 80 percent of Yahoo leagues, Gray needs to be owned in all formats.
Nov 17 - 12:37 AM

Jonas Gray rushed 12 times for 33 yards in New England's Week 9 win over the Broncos.

Gray was the Pats' leading rusher, but was significantly out-snapped by Shane Vereen when the game was still in the balance. Five of Gray's carries came deep into garbage time. Gray is a threat to vulture goal-line looks, but Vereen is the only Pats back worth starting on a weekly basis. Gray's role is game-plan specific, and the Pats' game plans are often unclear before Sunday.
Nov 2 - 8:43 PM

Jonas Gray rushed 17 times for 86 yards in New England's Week 8 win over the Bears.

One week after being limited to two touches in his Patriots debut, Gray took over as the Pats' between-the-tackles runner, notching four touches before Shane Vereen saw the ball. Gray out-touched Vereen 10-4 on the Pats' first two drives, but the rotation was much more even thereafter. Gray received four carries inside the Bears' 10-yard line, and three inside the five, but couldn't find pay dirt. An unsuccessful second quarter plunge on 4th-and-goal from the one was erased by a false start penalty. Gray has vanquished Brandon Bolden for "big back" duties, but Vereen is still the only Pats runner who can be trusted on a weekly basis.
