Ihenacho started 18-of-19 games last season, including the playoffs, amassing 88 tackles, six pass breakups, and three forced fumbles while playing solid run defense as a first-year starter. The Broncos decided to upgrade on him by signing T.J. Ward in the offseason, leaving Ihenacho in a fight for a roster spot with special teams aces Quinton Carter, David Bruton, and Omar Bolden.

Broncos tendered exclusive rights free agent S Duke Ihenacho.

Ihenacho opened last season starting at strong safety, but his playing time was scaled back down the stretch due to struggles in coverage. He also was fairly disappointing as a run defender considering that is theoretically his strength. In an ideal world, Ihenacho would focus on special teams in 2014.

Broncos SS Duke Ihenacho is currently in the NFL's concussion protocol.

The concussion occurred in Denver's Week 17 throttling of the lowly Raiders. Ihenacho has been an on-and-off starter for the Broncos this year. He was recently demoted from a full-time player into a part-timer at strong safety.

The Broncos benched SS Duke Ihenacho in Sunday's Week 14 win over the Titans.

After playing virtually every snap through the first 12 games of the season, Ihenacho saw just 22-of-51 snaps on Sunday. Omar Bolden stepped in at free safety while Mike Adams shifted from free to strong safety. "We wanted to look at Omar," coach John Fox said. "We took a look at some other guys a little bit to develop that throughout the rest of the season."

Broncos SS Duke Ihenacho (ankle) is active for Sunday's Week 4 game against the Eagles.

Duke Ihenacho is expected to be the Broncos' Opening Day starter at strong safety.

Ihenacho and veteran Mike Adams were competing for the job. Ihenacho started the final three preseason games and graded out as Pro Football Focus' No. 18 safety this preseason out of 158 qualified players. He added a pass breakup. A true in-the-box hitter, Ihenacho appears to have passed incumbent Mike Adams on the depth chart after a recent increase in first-team reps. Ihenacho is worth an IDP flier in leagues with open waivers. Adams had 80 tackles, 11 breakups, and two forced fumbles in 16 starts last year.
