In a related move, DB Chase Minnifield has been promoted to the 53-man roster. Ihenacho and Trent Robinson are the top reserves behind starters Ryan Clark and Brandon Meriweather after the Redskins waived Baccari Rambo.

Broncos tendered exclusive rights free agent S Duke Ihenacho.

Ihenacho opened last season starting at strong safety, but his playing time was scaled back down the stretch due to struggles in coverage. He also was fairly disappointing as a run defender considering that is theoretically his strength. In an ideal world, Ihenacho would focus on special teams in 2014.

The concussion occurred in Denver's Week 17 throttling of the lowly Raiders. Ihenacho has been an on-and-off starter for the Broncos this year. He was recently demoted from a full-time player into a part-timer at strong safety.

The Broncos benched SS Duke Ihenacho in Sunday's Week 14 win over the Titans.

After playing virtually every snap through the first 12 games of the season, Ihenacho saw just 22-of-51 snaps on Sunday. Omar Bolden stepped in at free safety while Mike Adams shifted from free to strong safety. "We wanted to look at Omar," coach John Fox said. "We took a look at some other guys a little bit to develop that throughout the rest of the season."

Ihenacho took a helmet-to-helmet hit from teammate Wesley Woodyard in the second quarter. He was taken to the locker room to undergo further tests, but has been cleared to return to the game.

Ihenacho was deemed "questionable" after going down in the first half, but wasn't spotted after halftime. His injury had the looks of a high-ankle sprain.

Broncos SS Duke Ihenacho exited Monday night's Week 3 game against the Raiders with an ankle injury and will not return.

Ihenacho left in the third quarter with the Broncos up comfortably 30-7. He injured his ankle in Week 2 against the Giants and was carted off the field, so it could be an aggravation. Mike Adams is the next man up at strong safety.

Ihenacho beat out Mike Adams for the starting job in training camp. Adams came in to replace him midway through the fourth quarter.

Ihenacho and veteran Mike Adams were competing for the job. Ihenacho started the final three preseason games and graded out as Pro Football Focus' No. 18 safety this preseason out of 158 qualified players. At 6-foot-1, 210, Ihenacho is a true in-the-box safety who does his best work against the run.
