ESPN Chargers reporter Eric D. Williams believes TE Sean McGrath could carve out a role this season.
McGrath had a mini-breakout with Chiefs in 2013, catching 26 passes for 302 yards and two scores, but he surprisingly walked away from football in training camp the next year. After a year away working on his graduate degree in art, McGrath made a comeback. He spent training camp with the Colts before latching on with the Chargers last season. It is possible McGrath works his way into a secondary role in the Chargers' thin tight end corps, but he won't become a fantasy factor. Apr 11 - 12:08 PM

Chargers waived TE Sean McGrath.

McGrath’s release could be a sign Ladarius Green (questionable, ankle) will return this week. San Diego officially promoted Tyrell Williams in a corresponding move.

Chargers signed TE Sean McGrath.

OG Craig Watts was waived in a corresponding roster move. McGrath's arrival doesn't speak well to Ladarius Green's Week 11 status.

Colts signed TE Sean McGrath.

A fourth-year undrafted free agent, McGrath caught 26 passes for 302 yards and two touchdowns for the Chiefs in 2013, but "retired" the following July. After a year out of football, the Henderson State product has decided to give it another chance. McGrath has proven he can hang in the league, but he's going to have a hard time cracking Indy's loaded tight end corps.

Free agent TE Sean McGrath is planning a return to football.

A bearded, grizzled backup tight end, McGrath was waived from the Chiefs' reserve/retired list on Wednesday. McGrath turned 27 last December.

Chiefs waived TE Sean McGrath.

It's a procedural move that saves Kansas City $585,000. McGrath, 27, retired from the NFL last year.

Chiefs TE Sean McGrath has decided to retire from the NFL.

After latching on with Seattle as an undrafted free agent in 2012, McGrath played 16 games for the Chiefs last season, notching 26 catches for 302 yards and two touchdowns. At only 26 and not dealing with any reported injuries, it appears McGrath's heart was no longer in football.

Chiefs TE Sean McGrath is considering retirement.

McGrath was absent from Chiefs practice Thursday after reporting to training camp on Wednesday. A third-year undrafted free agent, McGrath led the Chiefs' injury-ravaged tight end corps with 26 receptions last season. He's still only 26, but buried on the depth chart behind Anthony Fasano and Travis Kelce. Despite his roster odds, the only real reason for McGrath to retire would be that his heart isn't in it any more.

ESPN's Adam Teicher says TE Sean McGrath is unlikely to make the Chiefs' final roster.

McGrath played surprisingly well last season after injuries forced him into the starting lineup, catching 26 passes for 302 yards and two touchdowns. He is not the most athletic tight end, however, and struggles as a blocker. He's battling for a job behind Anthony Fasano and promising Travis Kelce.

Sean McGrath wasn't targeted in Kansas City's Wild Card loss to the Colts.

A second-year undrafted free agent, McGrath showed well in limited duty this season, catching 26 passes for 302 yards and two touches. Thanks largely to injuries to Anthony Fasano, McGrath played 622 snaps. He showed a nice pair of hands, but struggled as a blocker. He has an inside bead on a 2014 roster spot, but still needs to have a strong camp and preseason. McGrath isn't much of an option in Dynasty leagues. He's 26 and has limited athleticism.

Sean McGrath caught two passes for 14 yards with a touchdown in Sunday's Week 15 win at Oakland.

Anthony Fasano (knee) was inactive again, leaving the Bearded Wonder to play every down at tight end. He responded with a surprisingly crisp goal-line slant route, converting it for a six-yard touchdown. McGrath would be a weak TE2 against the Colts in Week 16 even if Fasano sits again. He has limited athletic ability and plays in a very conservative passing attack.

Starting in place of an injured Anthony Fasano (knee, concussion), Sean McGrath caught two passes for 20 yards in Kansas City's Week 14 win over the Redskins.

McGrath was a solid fill-in for Fasano earlier in the season, but drew only three targets in a blowout. Fasano could return as early as Week 15, keeping McGrath off the TE2 radar in re-draft leagues.

Sean McGrath caught one pass for one yard in Kansas City's Week 7 win over the Texans.

This, after McGrath was held catch-less in Week 6. With Anthony Fasano (knee/ankle) finally back, McGrath can be dropped in all re-draft leagues.

Fill-in Chiefs TE Sean McGrath was held without a catch in Week 6.

The doughnut snaps a string of three straight four-catch performances. McGrath will be a low-end TE2 until Anthony Fasano (ankle) returns.
Sun, Oct 13, 2013 06:12:00 PM

Chiefs TE Sean McGrath caught four balls for 54 yards in Kansas City's Week 5 win over Tennessee.

McGrath caught dump-down passes from Alex Smith between the numbers, topping 50 yards for the second straight game. He's only playing so much because Anthony Fasano and Travis Kelce are banged up. McGrath will not be a realistic bye-week filler play when the Chiefs face the lowly Raiders in Week 6.
